    Locally Localized Gravity Models in Higher Dimensions

    We explore the possibility of generalizing the locally localized gravity model in five space-time dimensions to arbitrary higher dimensions. In a space-time with negative cosmological constant, there are essentially two kinds of higher-dimensional cousins which not only take an analytic form but also are free from the naked curvature singularity in a whole bulk space-time. One cousin is a trivial extension of five-dimensional model, while the other one is in essence in higher dimensions. One interesting observation is that in the latter model, only anti-de Sitter (AdSpAdS_p) brane is physically meaningful whereas de Sitter (dSpdS_p) and Minkowski (MpM_p) branes are dismissed. Moreover, for AdSpAdS_p brane in the latter model, we study the property of localization of various bulk fields on a single brane. In particular, it is shown that the presence of the brane cosmological constant enables bulk gauge field and massless fermions to confine to the brane only by a gravitational interaction.     Electro-Mechanical Simulation of Switching Characteristics for Nanoelectromechanical Memory

    The static switching properties and readout characteristics of proposed high-speed and nonvolatile nanoelectromechanical (NEM) memory devices are investigated By conducting a three-dimensional finite element mechanical simulation combined with an electrostatic analysis, we analyze the electromechanical switching operation of a mechanically bistable NEM floating gate by applying gate voltage. We show that switching voltage can be reduced to less than 10V by reducing the zero-bias displacement of the floating gate and optimizing the cavity structure to improve mechanical symmetry. We also analyze the electrical readout property of the NEM memory devices by combining the electromechanical simulation with a drift-diffusion analysis We demonstrate that the mechanically bistable states of the floating gate can be detected via the changes in drain current with an ON/OFF current ratio of about 3 x 10 (C) 2009 The Japan Society of Applied Physic

    High stability design for new centrifugal compressor

    It is essential that high-performance centrifugal compressors be free of subsynchronous vibrations. A new high-performance centrifugal compressor has been developed by applying the latest rotordynamics knowledge and design techniques: (1) To improve the system damping, a specially designed oil film seal was developed. This seal attained a damping ratio three times that of the conventional design. The oil film seal contains a special damper ring in the seal cartridge. (2) To reduce the destabilizing effect of the labyrinth seal, a special swirl canceler (anti-swirl nozzle) was applied to the balance piston seal. (3) To confirm the system damping margin, the dynamic simulation rotor model test and the full load test applied the vibration exciting test in actual load conditions

    A philosophical context for methods to estimate origin-destination trip matrices using link counts.

    This paper creates a philosophical structure for classifying methods which estimate origin-destination matrices using link counts. It is claimed that the motivation for doing so is to help real-life transport planners use matrix estimation methods effectively, especially in terms of trading-off observational data with prior subjective input (typically referred to as 'professional judgement'). The paper lists a number of applications that require such methods, differentiating between relatively simple and highly complex applications. It is argued that a sound philosophical perspective is particularly important for estimating trip matrices in the latter type of application. As a result of this argument, a classification structure is built up through using concepts of realism, subjectivity, empiricism and rationalism. Emphasis is put on the fact that, in typical transport planning applications, none of these concepts is useful in its extreme form. The structure is then used to make a review of methods for estimating trip matrices using link counts, covering material published over the past 30 years. The paper concludes by making recommendations, both philosophical and methodological, concerning both practical applications and further research

    STM/STS Study on 4a X 4a Electronic Charge Order of Superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

    We performed low-bias STM measurements on underdoped Bi2212 crystals, and confirmed that a two-dimensional (2D) superstructure with a periodicity of four lattice constants (4a) is formed within the Cu-O plane at T<Tc. This 4a X 4a superstructure, oriented along the Cu-O bonding direction, is nondispersive and more intense in lightly doped samples with a zero temperature pseudogap (ZTPG) than in samples with a d-wave gap. The nondispersive 4a X 4a superstructure was clearly observed within the ZTPG or d-wave gap, while it tended to fade out outside the gaps. The present results provide a useful test for various models proposed for an electronic order hidden in the underdoped region of high-Tc cuprates.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to J. Phys. Soc. Jp
