    When is an error not a prediction error? An electrophysiological investigation

    A recent theory holds that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) uses reinforcement learning signals conveyed by the midbrain dopamine system to facilitate flexible action selection. According to this position, the impact of reward prediction error signals on ACC modulates the amplitude of a component of the event-related brain potential called the error-related negativity (ERN). The theory predicts that ERN amplitude is monotonically related to the expectedness of the event: It is larger for unexpected outcomes than for expected outcomes. However, a recent failure to confirm this prediction has called the theory into question. In the present article, we investigated this discrepancy in three trial-and-error learning experiments. All three experiments provided support for the theory, but the effect sizes were largest when an optimal response strategy could actually be learned. This observation suggests that ACC utilizes dopamine reward prediction error signals for adaptive decision making when the optimal behavior is, in fact, learnable

    A Chandra Survey of the X-ray Properties of Broad Absorption Line Radio-Loud Quasars

    This work presents the results of a Chandra study of 21 broad absorption line (BAL) radio-loud quasars (RLQs). We conducted a Chandra snapshot survey of 12 bright BAL RLQs selected from SDSS/FIRST data and possessing a wide range of radio and CIV absorption properties. Optical spectra were obtained nearly contemporaneously with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope; no strong flux or BAL variability was seen between epochs. We also include in our sample 9 additional BAL RLQs possessing archival Chandra coverage. We compare the properties of (predominantly high-ionization) BAL RLQs to those of non-BAL RLQs as well as to BAL radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and non-BAL RQQs for context. All 12 snapshot and 8/9 archival BAL RLQs are detected, with observed X-ray luminosities less than those of non-BAL RLQs having comparable optical/UV luminosities by typical factors of 4.1-8.5. (BAL RLQs are also X-ray weak by typical factors of 2.0-4.5 relative to non-BAL RLQs having both comparable optical/UV and radio luminosities.) However, BAL RLQs are not as X-ray weak relative to non-BAL RLQs as are BAL RQQs relative to non-BAL RQQs. While some BAL RLQs have harder X-ray spectra than typical non-BAL RLQs, some have hardness ratios consistent with those of non-BAL RLQs, and there does not appear to be a correlation between X-ray weakness and spectral hardness, in contrast to the situation for BAL RQQs. RLQs are expected to have X-ray continuum contributions from both disk-corona and small-scale jet emission. While the entire X-ray continuum in BAL RLQs cannot be obscured to the same degree as in BAL RQQs, we calculate that the jet is likely partially covered in many BAL RLQs.     Micro-heterogeneity of acetycholine receptor is described: preparations differ in their proportions of low- and high-affinity acetylcholine binding sites, with Kd for acetylcholine of 11 and 562 nM respectively. The low-affinity is absent from fresh membranes or unpurified Triton X-100 exstracts, but fa the major component of pure or oxidized preparations, and is therefore considered an artifact. Positive cooperativity in all high-affinity preparations is described, and used to explain how a Kd of 11 nM is compatible with a physiological half-response at 1 μM. Oligomeric variations in Torpedo species are described. T. caLifornica has two major oligomers, H and L, and two minor ones, HH and LL. The principal form is considered to be H; its molecular weight was estimated by D20 experiments as 535 000. It is a dimer of L, and a hexamer of LL. It is is proposed that HH is a nonspecific aggregate, formed especially at low detergent concentrations

    On Dwarf Galaxies as the Source of Intracluster Gas

    Recent observational evidence for steep dwarf galaxy luminosity functions in several rich clusters has led to speculation that their precursors may be the source of the majority of gas and metals inferred from intracluster medium (ICM) x-ray observations. Their deposition into the ICM is presumed to occur through early supernovae-driven winds, the resultant systems reflecting the photometric and chemical properties of the low luminosity dwarf spheroidals and ellipticals we observe locally. We consider this scenario, utilising a self-consistent model for spheroidal photo-chemical evolution and gas ejection via galactic superwinds.     Self-consistent massive disks in triaxial dark matter halos

    Galactic disks in triaxial dark matter halos become deformed by the elliptical potential in the plane of the disk in such a way as to counteract the halo ellipticity. We develop a technique to calculate the equilibrium configuration of such a disk in the combined disk-halo potential, which is based on the method of Jog (2000) but accounts for the radial variation in both the halo potential and the disk ellipticity. This crucial ingredient results in qualitatively different behavior of the disk: the disk circularizes the potential at small radii, even for a reasonably low disk mass. This effect has important implications for proposals to reconcile cuspy halo density profiles with low surface brightness galaxy rotation curves using halo triaxiality.     Biological and physical oceanographic observations pertaining to the trawl fishery in a region of persistent coastal upwelling

    An upwelling episode in the Point Sal region of the central California coast is examined by using data obtained by a data buoy. The episodes was interrupted by the abrupt abatement of the strong wind which promotes coastal upwelling. The mean hourly upwelling index is calculated to be higher than the 20 year mean monthly value. During 3 days of light wind commercial bottom trawl operations were possible. Shipboard estimates of chlorophyll content in surface waters during trawling show the high concentrations that are indicative of a rich biomass of phytoplankton, a result of the upwelling episode. Satellite imagery shows the extent of the upwelling water to be of the order of 100 km offshore; the result of many upwelling episodes. Shipboard echo sounder data show the presence of various delmersal species and of zooplakton; the latter graze on the phytoplankton in the upper euphotic layers. The fish catch data are recorded according to species for 2 days of trawling, and the catch per trawl hour is recorded
