    Liver Biopsy: Is it Safe in Children?

    Introduction: The blind liver biopsy technique has been widely used in Sudan as the availability of the ultra sound machines and the committed Pediatrics Radiologist were not always at hands. Liver biopsy is an essential tool in the diagnosis of liver diseases and subsequently, initiating the appropriate treatment.Objective: The aim of the study was to observe the safety of blind liver biopsy in our children. Methods: One hundred fifty consecutive liver biopsies in hospitalized children were evaluated retrospectively. Using a standard percussion technique biopsy sites were chosen and through intercostals space blind liver biopsies were performed by TruCut biopsy needle. The study was conducted at Gafaar Ibn Oaf Specialized Children Hospital ,Khartoum Sudan, over the last five years, between January 2005-January 2010 .Results: The first biopsy sample was considered macroscopically adequate in 94.8% of cases. A definitive histological diagnosis was possible in 99.1% of cases. seventy children were more than 5 years of age and of these 8 (11.4%) complained of pain at the biopsy site, external hemorrhage from the biopsy site was seen in 1 (0.6%) case but no sign of internal hemorrhage was detected during the 24 hours follow up period. No child died following the procedure.Conclusions: Blind liver biopsy in the studied hospitalized children was found to be a safe procedure.Key words: Menghini, intercostal, percutaneous, Cholestatic jaundice, hepatomegaly

    Factors influencing the prediction accuracy of model peptides in reversed-phase liquid chromatography

    Hydrophobicity is an important physicochemical property of peptides in solution. As well as being strongly associated with peptide stability and aggregation, hydrophobicity governs the solution based chromatographic separation processes, specifically reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC). In addition, hydrophobicity is a major physicochemical property of peptides in comparison to H-bonding, electrostatic, and aromatic properties in intermolecular interactions. However, a wide range of molecular factors can influence peptide hydrophobicity, with accurate predictions depending on specific peptide amino acid compositions, structure, and conformation. It is noticeable that peptide composition, the position of the amino acid, and its neighbouring groups play a crucial role in the elution process. In light of this, the same amino acid behaved differently depending on its position and neighbouring amino acid in the peptide chain. Extra attention should be paid to the denaturation process during the course of elution, as it has been shown to complicate and alter the elution pattern. This paper reports on the key peptide properties that can alter hydrophobicity and, consequently, the RPLC elution behaviour of the peptides, and it will conclude by proposing improved prediction algorithms for peptide elution in RPLC

    Soil Physico-Bio-Chemical Properties Under Poplar + Indian Mustard Inter Cropping System

    A field experiment was conducted during the winter seasons of 2008-10 at Agroforestry Research Centre, Pantnagar, India with aim to examine the effect of different levels of recommended Nitrogen (N): Phosphorus (P): Potassium (K) (NPK) on soil physico-bio-chemical properties under varying poplar tree densities with mustard introcropping. Lower soil bulk density was recorded under 1000 trees/ha density compared to sole crop in both the year. Soil bulk density (BD) decreased underneath trees. However, soil pH, available N and K were not influenced by tree density in both the years. Electrical conductivity (EC) and soil organic carbon (SOC) increased underneath trees of either tree density compared to sole crop in both the years. Significantly (P<0.05) higher available P was recorded under 1000 trees/ha density compared to 250 and 500 trees/ha densities including sole crop in 2008-09. Similarly, soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC) increased with increasing the tree density and significantly (P<0.01) higher value was recorded under 1000 trees/ha density compared to sole crop and sparse density both the years except 2009-10, where 500 and 1000 trees/ha densities remain statistically at par. On the other hand, dehydrogenase activity (DA) was maximum under 500 trees/ha density compared to sole crop and 1000 trees/ha density in both the years. Among the fertility levels, the maximum SOC and available N were recorded with 75% compared to 50, 100 and 125% of recommended NPK in 2008-09, except available N with 100% of recommended NPK. But, available P was more with 100% of recommended NPK in 2008-09. Similarly, maximum SMBC were recorded with 75 % compared to higher doses of recommended NPK in both the years. Similarly, BD, EC, SOC, available N, P and K were recorded maximum and soil pH minimum in 0-15 cm soil layers compared deeper layers.Journal of Nepal Agricultural Research Council Vol.1 2015 pp.14-2

    RoboCup 2D Soccer Simulation League: Evaluation Challenges

    We summarise the results of RoboCup 2D Soccer Simulation League in 2016 (Leipzig), including the main competition and the evaluation round. The evaluation round held in Leipzig confirmed the strength of RoboCup-2015 champion (WrightEagle, i.e. WE2015) in the League, with only eventual finalists of 2016 competition capable of defeating WE2015. An extended, post-Leipzig, round-robin tournament which included the top 8 teams of 2016, as well as WE2015, with over 1000 games played for each pair, placed WE2015 third behind the champion team (Gliders2016) and the runner-up (HELIOS2016). This establishes WE2015 as a stable benchmark for the 2D Simulation League. We then contrast two ranking methods and suggest two options for future evaluation challenges. The first one, "The Champions Simulation League", is proposed to include 6 previous champions, directly competing against each other in a round-robin tournament, with the view to systematically trace the advancements in the League. The second proposal, "The Global Challenge", is aimed to increase the realism of the environmental conditions during the simulated games, by simulating specific features of different participating countries.Comment: 12 pages, RoboCup-2017, Nagoya, Japan, July 201
