Disorder-induced microscopic magnetic memory
Using coherent x-ray speckle metrology, we have measured the influence of
disorder on major loop return point memory (RPM) and complementary point memory
(CPM) for a series of perpendicular anisotropy Co/Pt multilayer films. In the
low disorder limit, the domain structures show no memory with field cycling--no
RPM and no CPM. With increasing disorder, we observe the onset and the
saturation of both the RPM and the CPM. These results provide the first direct
ensemble-sensitive experimental study of the effects of varying disorder on
microscopic magnetic memory and are compared against the predictions of

Bound - states for truncated Coulomb potentials
The pseudoperturbative shifted - expansion technique PSLET is generalized
for states with arbitrary number of nodal zeros. Bound- states energy
eigenvalues for two truncated coulombic potentials are calculated using PSLET.
In contrast with shifted large-N expansion technique, PSLET results compare

G-band Spectral Synthesis in Solar Magnetic Concentrations
Narrow band imaging in the G-band is commonly used to trace the small
magnetic field concentrations of the Sun, although the mechanism that makes
them bright has remained unclear. We carry out LTE syntheses of the G-band in
an assorted set of semi-empirical model magnetic concentrations. The syntheses
include all CH lines as well as the main atomic lines within the band-pass. The
model atmospheres produce bright G-band spectra having many properties in
common with the observed G-band bright points. In particular, the contrast
referred to the quiet Sun is about twice the contrast in continuum wavelengths.
The agreement with observations does not depend on the specificities of the
model atmosphere, rather it holds from single fluxtubes to MIcro-Structured
Magnetic Atmospheres. However, the agreement requires that the real G-band
bright points are not spatially resolved, even in the best observations. Since
the predicted G-band intensities exceed by far the observed values, we foresee
a notable increase of contrast of the G-band images upon improvement of the
angular resolution. According to the LTE modeling, the G-band spectrum emerges
from the deep photosphere that produces the continuum. Our syntheses also
predict solar magnetic concentrations showing up in continuum images but not in
the G-band . Finally, we have examined the importance of the CH
photo-dissociation in setting the amount of G-band absorption. It turns out to

Perfectionism and achievement goals in young Finnish ice-hockey players aspiring to make the Under-16 national team
Research on perfectionism suggests that is it useful to differentiate between perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns. Regarding the 2 x 2 achievement goal framework, the usefulness of this differentiation was recently demonstrated in a study with university student athletes (Stoeber, Stoll, Pescheck, & Otto, 2008, Study 2), in which it was found that perfectionistic strivings were associated with mastery-approach and performance-approach goals and perfectionistic concerns with mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals. Because the study was largely exploratory and only used non-elite athletes, the aim of the present research was to replicate and extend these findings by investigating a sample of 138 young, elite ice-hockey players, while adding further measures of perfectionism and using structural equation modelling (SEM) to confirm the relationships between perfectionistic strivings, perfectionistic concerns,and the 2 x 2 achievement goals. The SEM results showed that, in elite athletes also, perfectionistic strivings are associated with mastery-approach and performance-approach goals, whereas perfectionistic concerns are associated with masteryavoidance,
performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals. Our findings corroborate the importance of differentiating between perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns when studying perfectionism in sports, because
only perfectionistic concerns (and not perfectionistic strivings) are associated with maladaptive patterns of achievement goals
Autoregression as a means of assessing the strength of seasonality in a time series
BACKGROUND: The study of the seasonal variation of disease is receiving increasing attention from health researchers. Available statistical tests for seasonality typically indicate the presence or absence of statistically significant seasonality but do not provide a meaningful measure of its strength. METHODS: We propose the coefficient of determination of the autoregressive regression model fitted to the data ([Image: see text]) as a measure for quantifying the strength of the seasonality. The performance of the proposed statistic is assessed through a simulation study and using two data sets known to demonstrate statistically significant seasonality: atrial fibrillation and asthma hospitalizations in Ontario, Canada. RESULTS: The simulation results showed the power of the [Image: see text] in adequately quantifying the strength of the seasonality of the simulated observations for all models. In the atrial fibrillation and asthma datasets, while the statistical tests such as Bartlett's Kolmogorov-Smirnov (BKS) and Fisher's Kappa support statistical evidence of seasonality for both, the [Image: see text] quantifies the strength of that seasonality. Corroborating the visual evidence that asthma is more conspicuously seasonal than atrial fibrillation, the calculated [Image: see text] for atrial fibrillation indicates a weak to moderate seasonality ([Image: see text] = 0.44, 0.28 and 0.45 for both genders, males and females respectively), whereas for asthma, it indicates a strong seasonality ([Image: see text] = 0.82, 0.78 and 0.82 for both genders, male and female respectively). CONCLUSIONS: For the purposes of health services research, evidence of the statistical presence of seasonality is insufficient to determine the etiologic, clinical and policy relevance of findings. Measurement of the strength of the seasonal effect, as can be determined using the [Image: see text] technique, is also important in order to provide a robust sense of seasonality
Loss of starch synthase IIIa changes starch molecular structure and granule morphology in grains of hexaploid bread wheat.
Starch synthase III plays a key role in starch biosynthesis and is highly expressed in developing wheat grains. To understand the contribution of SSIII to starch and grain properties, we developed wheat ssIIIa mutants in the elite cultivar Cadenza using in silico TILLING in a mutagenized population. SSIIIa protein was undetectable by immunoblot analysis in triple ssIIIa mutants carrying mutations in each homoeologous copy of ssIIIa (A, B and D). Loss of SSIIIa in triple mutants led to significant changes in starch phenotype including smaller A-type granules and altered granule morphology. Starch chain-length distributions of double and triple mutants indicated greater levels of amylose than sibling controls (33.8% of starch in triple mutants, and 29.3% in double mutants vs. 25.5% in sibling controls) and fewer long amylopectin chains. Wholemeal flour of triple mutants had more resistant starch (6.0% vs. 2.9% in sibling controls) and greater levels of non-starch polysaccharides; the grains appeared shrunken and weighed ~ 11% less than the sibling control which was partially explained by loss in starch content. Interestingly, our study revealed gene dosage effects which could be useful for fine-tuning starch properties in wheat breeding applications while minimizing impact on grain weight and quality
