Gypsy moths and American dog ticks: Space partners

    Get PDF
An experiment intended for the space shuttle and designed to investigate the effects of weightlessness and total darkness on gypsy moth eggs and engorged American dog ticks is described. The objectives are: (1) to reevaluate the effects of zero gravity on the termination of diapause/hibernation of embryonated gypsy moth eggs, (2) to determine the effect of zero gravity on the ovipositions and subsequent hatch from engorged female American dog ticks that have been induced to diapause in the laboratory, and (3) to determine whether morphological or biochemical changes occur in the insects under examination. Results will be compared with those from a similar experiment conducted on Skylab 4

A Phenomenological Investigation of the Resilience and Success of African-American Pastors Serving in the Church of God in Christ

    Get PDF
The content of this manuscript is research investigated for the resilience and success of pastors in the Church of God in Christ, a Pentecostal denomination that has over six million members, to include over three-thousand pastors. The research is a phenomenological study designed to provide a narrative, interview of the participants to share their background, role, and day-to-day practices of the work of ministry as a senior pastor in this organization. The research will consist of seven to ten pastors selected from across the country, all African-American males, age groups ranging from 42 years to 72 years of age. The information will be gathered by personal interviews conducted by asking each of them the same questions to gather all the facts and data for this research design. The instrument used will be a recording device that will record all conversations that will be transcribed in writing verbatim. As the human instrument conducting this research, it will constitute travel, lodging, and scheduling of each participant that will give the researcher an intimate up and close contact with each participant. The information will be safeguarded, names will be protected and all information will be useful as a model example of what constitutes success for ministry and the tools and resources needed to maintain a healthy and productive state of mind to be resilient in leading the charge as clergymen in the field of ministry. It is with great joy and a privilege to conduct this interview with pastors serving in the Church of God in Christ

A Search for Intrinsic Polarization in O Stars with Variable Winds

    Get PDF
New observations of 9 of the brightest northern O stars have been made with the Breger polarimeter on the 0.9~m telescope at McDonald Observatory and the AnyPol polarimeter on the 0.4~m telescope at Limber Observatory, using the Johnson-Cousins UBVRI broadband filter system. Comparison with earlier measurements shows no clearly defined long-term polarization variability. For all 9 stars the wavelength dependence of the degree of polarization in the optical range can be fit by a normal interstellar polarization law. The polarization position angles are practically constant with wavelength and are consistent with those of neighboring stars. Thus the simplest conclusion is that the polarization of all the program stars is primarily interstellar. The O stars chosen for this study are generally known from ultraviolet and optical spectroscopy to have substantial mass loss rates and variable winds, as well as occasional circumstellar emission. Their lack of intrinsic polarization in comparison with the similar Be stars may be explained by the dominance of radiation as a wind driving force due to higher luminosity, which results in lower density and less rotational flattening in the electron scattering inner envelopes where the polarization is produced. However, time series of polarization measurements taken simultaneously with H-alpha and UV spectroscopy during several coordinated multiwavelength campaigns suggest two cases of possible small-amplitude, periodic short-term polarization variability, and therefore intrinsic polarization, which may be correlated with the more widely recognized spectroscopic variations.Comment: LaTeX2e, 22 pages including 11 tables; 12 separate gif figures; uses aastex.cls preprint package; accepted by The Astronomical Journa

The Impact of Policy Tool Selection on Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) in Ireland

    Get PDF
This paper looks at the range of policy tools selected by the Irish State to fund and develop Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). The choice is influenced by cultural norms and ideological predisposition with Ireland demonstrating a pro-market bias and relying on a range of interdependencies and third parties for delivery of services. The tools selected by the Irish State are typically those associated with States that promote a liberal agenda, sometimes referred to as the Anglo/American model (Salamon 2002). However, a closer review of the tools characteristics in Ireland reveal a tendency to adopt a conservative corporatist (Dean 2001) stance that can discourage women’s participation in the workforce

Managing Homelessness: Towards a Holistic Paradigm Perspectives from Ireland and Australia

    Get PDF
The problem of homelessness still persists in many advanced capitalist Societies today, despite marked improvements in their overall economic prosperity. The broad objective of this research is ro undertake a comparative study of approaches to addressing the problem of homelessness in two such ocieties - the Republic of Ireland and the State of Victoria in Australia - and to develop an outline model, which addresses the problem of homelessness in a more holistic manner. The two locations of Ireland and Victoria were chosen because major reviews of homelessness policies have been undertaken recently in both areas. In addition, although geographically distant, they are of a similar size in terms of population, with just under 4 million in the Republic of Ireland and 4.8 million in Victoria. Also, strong historical and cultural links exist between the two jurisdictions, which can be traced back to deportation in the nineteenth century. The discussion commences with a brief overview of homeless ness as both a theoretical and a practical construct, providing a backdrop to the more focused part of the study. Moving on to the main part of the work, perspectives on homelessness in Ireland and Victoria are presented. The next task is to review the limited data available in order to identifY similarities and differences that may emerge, and relate them to the more general findings in the literature. Finally, the case is made for the need to adopt a more holistic approach to addressing the problem of homelessness and an outline model is presented

Play and Technology:a Study Of ICTs In Play Activities Of Irish Children (4-8 and 8-12)

    Get PDF
Defined in the Ireland’s national play policy as ‘freely chosen, personally directed, intrinsically motivated behaviour that actively engages the child’ (NCO, 2004, p.10), play now more often than not is a technologically-mediated activity. This paper focuses on the role of technology in play and explores the impact of technological change on children’s play activities. Drawing on our study commissioned by Ireland’s National Children’s Office, we present a detailed exploration of the play activities of Irish children, identifying the range of technologies accessed by children and how they are used in their daily play patterns. The project provided children with an opportunity to express their views and the research presents children’s perspectives on the meanings, interpretations and value placed on technology-based play. We also document the views of parents and teachers on the opportunities and dangers involved. Research findings evaluate the extent of the penetration of technology into children’s lives and look at the wider implications for physiological and behavioural development, education and lifestyle. These draft research findings offer valuable comparative data with which to identify the most important issues for future research and greatly complement existing research within this underdeveloped field

Breast Cancer Disparities at Home and Abroad: A Review of the Challenges and Opportunities for System-Level Change

    Get PDF
Sizeable disparities exist in breast cancer outcomes, both between Black and White patients in the United States, and between patients in the US and other high-income countries compared to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In both settings, health system factors are key drivers of disparities. In the US, Black women are more likely to die of breast cancer than Whites, and have poorer outcomes even among patients with similar stage and tumor subtype. Over-representation of higher-risk “triple negative” breast cancers contributes to breast cancer mortality in Black women; however, the greatest survival disparities occur within the good-prognosis hormone-receptor positive (HR+) subtypes. Disparities in access to treatment within the complex US health system may be responsible for a substantial portion of these differences in survival. In LMICs, breast cancer mortality rates are substantially higher than in the US, while incidence continues to rise. This mortality burden is largely attributable to health system factors, including late-stage presentation at diagnosis and lack of availability of systemic therapy. This article will review the existing evidence for how health-system factors in the United States contribute to breast cancer disparities, discuss methods for studying the relationship of health system factors to racial disparities, and provide examples of health system interventions that show promise for mitigating breast cancer disparities. We will then review evidence of global breast cancer disparities in low and middle income countries, the treatment factors that contribute to these disparities, and actions being taken to combat breast cancer disparities around the world
