We consider a -Beam facility where Li and B ions are
accelerated at , accumulated in a 10 Km storage ring and let
decay, so as to produce intense and beams. These beams
illuminate two iron detectors located at Km and
Km, respectively. The physics potential of this setup is analysed in full
detail as a function of the flux. We find that, for the highest flux ( ion decays per year per baseline), the sensitivity to
reaches ; the sign of
the atmospheric mass difference can be identified, regardless of the true
hierarchy, for ; and, CP-violation
can be discovered in 70% of the -parameter space for , having some sensitivity to CP-violation down to

TAML/H2O2 oxidative degradation of metaldehyde: Pursuing better water treatment for the most persistent pollutants.
The extremely persistent molluscicide, metaldehyde, widely used on farms and gardens, is often detected in drinking water sources of various countries at concentrations of regulatory concern. Metaldehyde contamination restricts treatment options. Conventional technologies for remediating dilute organics in drinking water, activated carbon and ozone, are insufficiently effective against metaldehyde. Some treatment plants have resorted to effective, but more costly UV/H2O2. Here we have examined if TAML/H2O2 can decompose metaldehyde under laboratory conditions to guide development of a better real world option. TAML/H2O2 slowly degrades metaldehyde to acetaldehyde and acetic acid. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H NMR) was used to monitor the degradation-the technique requires a high metaldehyde concentration (60 ppm). Within the pH range of 6.5-9, the reaction rate is greatest at pH 7. Under optimum conditions, one aliquot of TAML 1a (400 nM) catalyzed 5% degradation over 10 hours with a turnover number of 40. Five sequential TAML aliquots (2 μM overall) effected a 31% removal over 60 hours. TAML/H2O2 degraded metaldehyde steadily over many hours, highlighting an important long-service property. The observation of metaldehyde decomposition under mild conditions provides a further indication that TAML catalysis holds promise for advancing water treatment. These results have turned our attention to more aggressive TAML activators in development, which we expect will advance the observed technical performance

with understanding the neutrino oscillation phenomenon and its implications.
Here a brief account of neutrino oscillations is given together with a
description of the supporting data. Some current and planned accelerator

Neutral currents and tests of three-neutrino unitarity in long-baseline experiments
We examine a strategy for using neutral current measurements in long-baseline
neutrino oscillation experiments to put limits on the existence of more than
three light, active neutrinos. We determine the relative contributions of
statistics, cross section uncertainties, event misidentification and other
systematic errors to the overall uncertainty of these measurements. As specific
case studies, we make simulations of beams and detectors that are like the K2K,
T2K, and MINOS experiments. We find that the neutral current cross section
uncertainty and contamination of the neutral current signal by charge current
events allow a sensitivity for determining the presence of sterile neutinos at

SGC - Structural Biology and Human Health: A New Approach to Publishing Structural Biology Results
The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) is a not-for-profit, public-private partnership established to deliver novel structural biology knowledge on proteins of medical relevance and place this information into the public domain without restriction, spearheading the concept of "Open-Source Science" to enable drug discovery. The SGC is a major provider of structural information focussed on proteins related to human health, contributing 20.5% of novel structures released by the PDB in 2008. In this article we describe the PLoS ONE Collection entitled 'Structural Biology and Human Health: Medically Relevant Proteins from the SGC'. This Collection contains a series of articles documenting many of the novel protein structures determined by the SGC and work to further characterise their function. Each article in this Collection can be read in an enhanced version where we have integrated our interactive and intuitive 3D visualisation platform, known as iSee. This publishing platform enables the communication of complex structural biology and related data to a wide audience of non-structural biologists. With the use of iSee as the first example of an interactive and intuitive 3D document publication method as part of PLoS ONE, we are pushing the boundaries of structural biology data delivery and peer-review. Our strong desire is that this step forward will encourage others to consider the need for publication of three dimensional and associated data in a similar manner. © 2009 Lee et al
Materialist and Post-Materialist Concerns and the Wish for a Strong Leader in 27 Countries
There is evidence that democracies are under threat around the world while the quest for strong leaders is increasing. Although the causes of these developments are complex and multifaceted, here we focus on one factor: the extent to which citizens express materialist and post-materialist concerns. We explore whether objective higher levels of democracy are differentially associated with materialist and post-materialist concerns and, in turn, whether this is related to the wish for a strong leader. Testing this hypothesis across 27 countries (N = 5,741) demonstrated a direct negative effect of democracies' development on the wish for a strong leader. Further, multi-level mediation analysis showed that the relation between the Democracy Index and the wish for a strong leader was mediated by materialist concerns. This pattern of results suggests that lower levels of democracy are associated with enhanced concerns about basic needs and this is linked to greater support for strong leaders.Peer reviewe

Theta_13: phenomenology, present status and prospect
The leptonic mixing angle theta_13 is currently a high-priority topic in the
field of neutrino physics, with five experiments under way, searching for
neutrino oscillations induced by this angle. We review the phenomenology of
theta_13 and discuss the information from present global oscillation data. A
description of the upcoming reactor and accelerator experiments searching for a
non-zero value of theta_13 is given, and we evaluate the sensitivity reach

Regaining In-Group Continuity in Times of Anxiety about the Group's Future : A Study on the Role of Collective Nostalgia Across 27 Countries
Collective nostalgia for the good old days of the country thrives across the world. However, little is known about the social psychological dynamics of this collective emotion across cultures. We predicted that collective nostalgia is triggered by collective angst as it helps people to restore a sense of in-group continuity via stronger in-group belonging and out-group rejection (in the form of opposition to immigrants). Based on a sample (N = 5,956) of individuals across 27 countries, the general pattern of results revealed that collective angst predicts collective nostalgia, which subsequently relates to stronger feelings of in-group continuity via in-group belonging (but not via out-group rejection). Collective nostalgia generally predicted opposition to immigrants, but this was subsequently not related to in-group continuity. © 2018 Hogrefe Publishing.Peer reviewe
