Adaptive Filtering for Non-Gaussian Stable Processes

    Get PDF
A large class of physical phenomenon observed in practice exhibit non-Gaussian behavior. In this letter, a-stable distributions, which have heavier tails than Gaussian distribution, are considered to model non-Gaussian signals. Adaptive signal processing in the presence of such a noise is a requirement of many practical problems. Since direct application of commonly used adaptation techniques fail in these applications, new algorithms for adaptive filtering for α-stable random processes are introduced. © 1994 IEE

Helicobacter Genotyping and Detection in Peroperative Lavage Fluid in Patients with Perforated Peptic Ulcer

Introduction and Objectives Certain Helicobacter pylori genotypes are associated with peptic ulcer disease; however, little is known about associations between the H. pylori genotype and perforated peptic ulcer (PPU). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate which genotypes are present in patients with PPU and which genotype is dominant in this population. The secondary aim was to study the possibility of determining the H. pylori status in a way other than by biopsy. Materials and Methods Serum samples, gastric tissue biopsies, lavage fluid, and fluid from the nasogastric tube were collec

Swell pressure prediction by suction methods

Soil suction is the most relevant soil parameter for characterization of the swell behaviour. An attempt has been made to predict the swell pressures from soil suction measurements. Bentonite-Kaolinite clay mixtures were prepared to obtain soils in a wide range of plasticity indices. Suction measurements using thermocouple physchrometer technique and constant volume swell tests in oedometers were made on statically compacted specimens. Soil suction is correlated to plasticty index, water content and dry density and a multiple regression equation were developed. A linear relationship is found between log suction and the swell pressure. However a satisfactory correlation between initial soil suction and the swell pressure does not exist to propose a simple regression equation for a quick prediction of swell pressures from suction measurements

Combined gesture-speech analysis and speech driven gesture synthesis

Multimodal speech and speaker modeling and recognition are widely accepted as vital aspects of state of the art human-machine interaction systems. While correlations between speech and lip motion as well as speech and facial expressions are widely studied, relatively little work has been done to investigate the correlations between speech and gesture. Detection and modeling of head, hand and arm gestures of a speaker have been studied extensively and these gestures were shown to carry linguistic information. A typical example is the head gesture while saying ”yes/no”. In this study, correlation between gestures and speech is investigated. In speech signal analysis, keyword spotting and prosodic accent event detection has been performed. In gesture analysis, hand positions and parameters of global head motion are used as features. The detection of gestures is based on discrete predesignate

The detection of gestures is based on discrete predesignated symbol sets, which are manually labeled during the training phase. The gesture-speech correlation is modelled by examining the co-occurring speech and gesture patterns. This correlation can be used to fuse gesture and speech modalities for edutainment applications (i.e. video games, 3-D animations) where natural gestures of talking avatars is animated from speech. A speech driven gesture animation example has been implemented for demonstration. 1
