Hazard Perception and Demand for Insurance Among Selected Motorcyclists in Lagos, Nigeria
This study examines hazard perception effects on the demand for insurance withspecial focus on motorcycle riders in Lagos state. For this purpose, the researchershave been able to examine selected hazard perception determinants and theireffects on the insuring attitude and desire of motorcycle riders. An explanatoryresearch design was employed and a convenience sampling type of the nonprobabilitysampling technique was adopted. Data was gathered by interviewsconducted at motorcycle parks along the Lagos-Badagry expressway. The sampleconsisted of 126 respondents made up of commercial motorcycle riders within thesample areas. Data collected was analysed using multiple regression technique. The study was able to establish some level of contributory linkage between hazardperception and demand for motorcycle insurance. The findings show that whiledread and trust both appeared to have significant effect, publicity and controllabilityboth have positive contributory effect; furthermore, choice expressed an inverserelationship with demand for insurance among the motorcycle riders. The studytherefore recommends pre-loss and post-loss measures among the motorcycleriders so that unforeseen motorcycle risks can be managed. Also, insurancecompanies should endeavour to invest more on enlightening the motorcycle riders in order to lessen their dread of loss outcome, and thus, design policy that can instil trust in motorcycle riders in insurance as a loss control measure
Nature of Arbitral Awards in Nigeria: an Overview
The need to explore other means of dispute resolution has resulted in the development of Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms, prominent among which is arbitration. Arbitration is the most regulated mechanism and is best suited for commercial relationships because, while it seeks to preserve existing relationships, it also ends in an award which is binding on the parties to the proceedings. The study examined the nature of arbitral awards through the lens of decided cases and the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 2004. The study adopted the doctrinal method of research and relied on primary sources of information such as statutes, cases and conventions; as well as secondary sources of information such as books, journal articles and materials gotten from the internet, all subject to content analysis. The study found that the award, which is final and binding on the parties, has the same status as a judgment of the court in Nigeria when recognised and enforced, but may be set aside where any of the essential requirements are lacking. The study concluded by stating the need for everyone involved to take conscious steps from the beginning of the arbitration in order to end up with a valid and an enforceable award
THE CONSTRUCT, INTRODUCTION AND SITUATE OF RUDIMENTARY NUMBER SKILLS FOR CHILDREN IN NUMERACY LEARNING OUTCOMES
The competence and positive disposition development toward mathematic subject has been observed an uphill task to learners across educational endeavors despite its need in life at home, paid work, participation in community and civic life. The Nigerian Education Policy (2013) made numeracy an important aspect of the specific objectives of primary education in Nigeria. However, the teaching-learning processes lithely attend to specification(s) of utilities. In Nigeria, most schools lack instructional materials; the available were mainly ready-made - majorly imported. Information and communication technology has greatly improved teaching and learning yet, observations revealed domination of foreign tongued instructional materials – uneconomical, alien, distractive and inadequate. This study constructs and investigates the effect of a locally produced, customized numeracy package, the Rudimentary Number Skills for Children (RuNS-K) on academic achievement of pupils in computer mediated environment with a view to improve pupils’ performance in numeracy. Pre-test, post-test, quasi experimental research design was adopted. The population consist lower primary school pupils in southwest Nigeria. Multi stage sampling technique was employed to select study sample. One senatorial district, one of the five major cities in the district, three of the eighty-four public primary schools having functional computer laboratories were purposively sampled. An intact class in each school was randomly assigned into two experimental (ICT-integrated Learning Cycle and ICT-integrated Learners-self-controlled) and a comparison groups. Study instruments include the Rudimentary Number Skill for Children (RuNS-K) and the Test of Numeracy Achievement (TNA). The study found localized, customized packages needful for numeracy improvement. It also found significant improvement in numeracy performance in learners in ICT-integrated Learners-self-controlled (ICT- LSC) situation. The study further revealed customized ICT- LSC learning strategy as best influence for retention in pupils. It concludes that, interventions with customized, ICT-integrated learners-self-controlled situation improve learners’ cognition both in performance and retention. Study recommends localized, improvised educational materials development and usage as aid to improving teaching-learning process and the entire education system in Nigeria
Business Ethics, Corporate Philosophy and Regulatory Challenges in the Confectionary Industry: An Evaluation of the Bread Market in Nigeria
This study sets out to identify why - in the process of “doing business”- most organizations in Nigeria resort to
offering sub standard products to the public, particularly as regards food products. This approach allows
businesses to make excess profit without recourse to best ethical practices, the supposed corporate philosophy of
their organizations, and to the detriment of the customers. Indiscriminate profit maximization” mentality is now
on the increase within the confectionary industry in Nigeria; thus the paper considered the theory of public
interest and gives an insight to Kant’s ethical philosophy with a view to critically evaluate the role of The
National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC); the agency charged with the
responsibility of upholding best ethical practices among confectionary and related industries in Nigeria. The
study also identified some lapses in the discharge of NAFDAC’s regulatory functions which have contributed to
the incidence of unethical practices among Nigerian business organisations. The paper therefore recommends
that NAFDAC operations be re-evaluated for better operational performanc
