Synchrotron radiation was used to investigate the self-assembly in two comb-shaped supramolecules systems consisting of octyl gallate (OG), i.e., 1-octyl-3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate, hydrogen bonded to the pyridine groups of polyisoprene-block-poly(vinylpyridine) diblock copolymers. In the case of the 1,2-polyisoprene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine)(OG)x system, self-assembly was only observed for x ≥0.5, where x denotes the number of OG molecules per pyridine group. For x = 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, and 1.2 the system self-assembled in the form of hexagonally ordered cylinders of P4VP(OG) throughout the entire temperature range of 25-200 °C investigated. For the 1,4-polyisoprene-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine)(OG)x system, on the other hand, a considerably more complex phase behavior was found, including the formation of cubic, hexagonally ordered cylinders and lamellar morphologies. In this case several order-order transitions were observed as a function of temperature, including a lamellar to lamellar transition involving a collapse of the layer thickness. The absence of hydrogen bonding between the octyl gallate molecules and the pyridine groups at elevated temperatures is argued to be a key factor for many of the phenomena observed.

Extended conformations of isolated molecular bottle-brushes:Influence of side-chain topology

    Get PDF
A Monte Carlo study is presented to discuss the influence of the side-chain topology on the enhancement of the persistence length of a molecular bottle-brush in a dilute athermal solution due to the excluded volume interactions between the side chains. The structures investigated consisted of freely jointed backbones of 100 hard spheres (beads) of diameter 1 to which 50 equally flexible side chains were grafted. The diameter of the side-chain beads was varied from 1 to 3 in the same units. For every given size of the side-chain bead, the length of the side chains was varied from 4 to 20 beads. The ratio between the persistence length and the bottle-brush diameter, which is the determining factor for lyotropic behavior of conventional semi-flexible chains, was found to be almost independent of the side-chain length. At the same time, it was found to increase considerably with increasing size of the side-chain beads, suggesting that by a proper choice of the chemistry lyotropic behavior of molecular bottle-brushes due to excluded-volume interactions between the side chains might be achieved. Moreover, relatively short side chains can be used since the side-chain length has only a minor influence on the ratio between the persistence length and the diameter. These findings are in a good agreement with recent experimental observations

Malik D, Rahmawati NO, Puspitasari O, Aprilensia D, Annisa P, Yonarta D. 2021. Application of the budikdamber system to probiotic feed in strengthening food security in the Covid-19 era. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-9 Tahun 2021, Palembang 20 Oktober 2021. pp. 476-481. Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).Human needs for animal protein are increasing, but the availability of fish farming land is getting narrower. Fish farming also requires feed other than land, but fish feed is getting more expensive. Steps need to be taken to reduce feed costs and creativity for alternative cultivation areas, as well as apply appropriate techniques to meet animal needs in the Covid-19 era. This paper was to develop a bucket fish farming system on probiotic feed to increase food production in the community. The writing of this scientific paper uses a qualitative descriptive method. Descriptive method is a method used to create a sequential description of the relationship between the phenomenon under investigation and the results that are not expressed in numbers. Catfish rearing in 80 L bucket media for 30 days resulted in catfish SR 41–70%, fish harvest was 2440 g (71.76 g/head), and mustard harvest produced as much as 30 bunches. However, these results are not appropriate and it is still necessary to optimize the cultivation container in order to avoid death due to predators and fish that come out of the rearing container. The catfish cultivation system can be a potential solution for fish cultivation, especially in narrow areas and aquaponic vegetable growing media such as mustard greens as additional community food in the Covid-19 era

Substance use among healthcare workers in a Nigerian tertiary hospital

    Get PDF
Background: Research studies abound on substance use among healthcare workers (HCWs) in the western world, but a paucity of such information is the case in developing countries. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of substance use among HCWs in a Nigerian tertiary hospital and the variety of substances commonly used. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 380 HCWs selected across 4 professional cadres by stratified random sampling method. Results: About 85.5% of the respondents were past and/or current users of substances or substance-containing food items. Out of the 325 respondents who had ever used substances before, 208 (64%) were current users- these represented 54.7% of the whole. Coffee, alcohol and kolanuts were most frequently used. Diazepam was the least used. Gender was a statistically significant determinant of substance use (p<0.05). Conclusion: Substance use among HCWs carries grave implications for practitioners and patients alike. Further research towards unearthing and addressing the factors fueling this menace in developing countries will contribute immensely in resolving this challenge

Invariant Distribution of Promoter Activities in Escherichia coli

Cells need to allocate their limited resources to express a wide range of genes. To understand how Escherichia coli partitions its transcriptional resources between its different promoters, we employ a robotic assay using a comprehensive reporter strain library for E. coli to measure promoter activity on a genomic scale at high-temporal resolution and accuracy. This allows continuous tracking of promoter activity as cells change their growth rate from exponential to stationary phase in different media. We find a heavy-tailed distribution of promoter activities, with promoter activities spanning several orders of magnitude. While the shape of the distribution is almost completely independent of the growth conditions, the identity of the promoters expressed at different levels does depend on them. Translation machinery genes, however, keep the same relative expression levels in the distribution across conditions, and their fractional promoter activity tracks growth rate tightly. We present a simple optimization model for resource allocation which suggests that the observed invariant distributions might maximize growth rate. These invariant features of the distribution of promoter activities may suggest design constraints that shape the allocation of transcriptional resources

Malaria in Nigeria is treated blindly in most cases and where diagnostic measures exist, efficacies of several are still in doubt. This study evaluated performance of microscopy and rapid (RDT) methods in confirming prevalence of malaria parasites (MP),parasite species and percent parasitized red blood cells in 384 persons systematically selected from seven primary healthcare facilities in Ogun State, Nigeria from October to December 2012. Giemsa thin and thick film techniques and RDT (SD Bioline Ag P.f/Pan kit) were employed on the blood samples. Data were analysed using SPSS version 16. Demographic results showed that females were 61% and males 39%,but of varying age groups. Seventy-one percent of the blood samples were positive for MP by microscopic blood films, and only 24% samples were positive by RDT. Paired sample T-test showed a significant difference (P=0.000)between microscopy and RDT methods. Of the 273 positive blood samples,95.6%were P. falciparum,3.3% were P. malariae, 0.7% was P. ovale and P. vivax (0.4%). For RDT, P. falciparum was 74% while mixed infections were 26%. Prevalence in risk groups 0–10 and 11–20 age groups was observed to be higher with significant differences (p=0.011, p=0.023) for both microscopy and RDT respectively. RDT sensitivity and specificity were 23.4% and 74.7% compared to microscopy. Positive Predictive Value and Negative Predictive Value were 69.6% and 28.4%. The efficiency of the RDT was 38.3%. The low sensitivity of RDT observed means that malaria diagnosis by microscopy method remains the gold standar

Chiral perturbation theory in a magnetic background - finite-temperature effects

We consider chiral perturbation theory for SU(2) at finite temperature TT in a constant magnetic background BB. We compute the thermal mass of the pions and the pion decay constant to leading order in chiral perturbation theory in the presence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field gives rise to a splitting between Mπ0M_{\pi^0} and Mπ±M_{\pi^{\pm}} as well as between Fπ0F_{\pi^0} and Fπ±F_{\pi^{\pm}}. We also calculate the free energy and the quark condensate to next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. Both the pion decay constants and the quark condensate are decreasing slower as a function of temperature as compared to the case with vanishing magnetic field. The latter result suggests that the critical temperature TcT_c for the chiral transition is larger in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The increase of TcT_c as a function of BB is in agreement with most model calculations but in disagreement with recent lattice calculations.Comment: 24 pages and 9 fig
