Multiple and Symbol Operators: the Battle for Market Leadership in the Irish Grocery Market

    Get PDF
The Irish grocery retailing market, one of the most competitive in Europe, has undergone a metamorphosis in recent years. The demise of many small grocers, an increased concentration of multiples and the galvanization of the independent sector through symbol group participation has intensified competitive rivalry. The two largest multiples ie. Tesco Ireland and Dunnes Stores continually vie for number one position nationally. In recent years, Musgrave have galvanised the independent sector and are now in a position to challenge the top multiples for the prized pole position in the market. Recent results show that sales were up 15% vear-on-year, on top of 20% growth in 2000. The company has continued to out-perform the national grocery market, which grew by approximately 8-9% during the period. This case presents the current position in the Irish grocery market and profiles the three contenders for market leadership

Cannabis through the looking glass: chemo- and enantio-selective separation of phytocannabinoids by enantioselective ultra high performance supercritical fluid chromatography

By using the Inverted Chirality Columns Approach (ICCA) we have developed an enantioselective UHPSFC method to determine the enantiomeric excess (ee) of (-)-Δ(9)-THC in medicinal marijuana (Bedrocan®). The ee was high (99.73%), but the concentration of the (+)-enantiomer (0.135%) was not negligible, and it is worth a systematic evaluation of bioactivity

Facilitators and Inhibitors of Supply Chain Innovation-prospects for Supply Chain Managment in the Irish Grocery Sector

    Get PDF
Supply chain management is one of the most significant strategic challenges currently facing the Irish grocery sector. The UK grocery market with its emphasis on composite deliveries via regional distribution centres is extremely sophisticated; the Irish grocery sector, however, is in the embryonic stage of implementing central distribution. The potential to develop innovative supply chain systems is mediated by both national logistic-related variables and company characteristics. In addition to competitor activity and market forces, drivers and inhibitors such as economic growth, consumer preferences, the regulatory environment and physical and technological infrastructure influence the evolution of supply chain systems. This paper presents a profile of the Irish grocery market and a framework within which to analyse the facilitators and inhibitors of supply chain innovation based on international trends mediated by national characteristics

    Farm ponds for Iowa

    Get PDF
Every farm must have an adequate water supply which can be depended upon for livestock during periods of extended drouth. Many farmers in southern Iowa depend upon their farm ponds as a,principal source of water or to supplement their wells. A well planned and constructed farm pond may be what you need to insure an adequate supply of water on your farm at all times if your present water supply is not dependable. A farm pond will be a ready source of water for many years if properly planned, constructed and maintained. Before investing money in a farm pond, however, consider a number of important problems. Then decide what is best for you and your farm. Your county extension director or technician of your local soil conservation district may be able to help plan the pond. A farm pond, in addition to its usefulness in providing water for livestock, can serve other important needs on the farm. The pond can supply water for fire protection, limited irrigation, orchard and crop spraying, fish production, recreation and waterfowl. A pond properly planned and maintained can be stocked with fish and thereby be a source of food as well as provide sport for the family or neighbors

Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Surging in Continuous-Flow Compressors

    Get PDF
Experiments have been conducted to determine the conditions that cause surging in compressors and to determine the effect of various installations and operating conditions on the character of the velocity and pressure variations occurring during surging. These investigations were made on three compressor units and the variation of static, total, and velocity pressure with time was recorded. In addition to the experimental studies, a simplified analysis was made to determine how instability of flow may occur in a compressor. Based on this analysis, an examination was made of several possible methods of inhibiting the occurrence of surging

Shoreline Evolution: Isle of Wight, Virginia James River and Pagan River Shorelines

    Get PDF
Shoreline evolution is the change in the shore zone through time. Along Chesapeake Bay’s estuarine shores, it is a process and response system. The processes at work include winds, waves, tides and currents which shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The shore line is commonly plotted and measured to provide a rate of change, but it also is important to understand the geomorphic patterns of change. Shore analysis provides the basis to know how a particular coast has changed through time and how it might proceed in the future. The purpose of this data report is to document how the shore zone of Isle of Wight (Figure 1) has evolved since 1937. Aerial imagery was taken for most of the Bay region beginning that year and can be used to assess the geomorphic nature of shore change. Aerial photos show how the coast has changed, how beaches, dunes, bars, and spits have grown or decayed, how barriers have breached, how inlets have changed course, and how one shore type has displaced another or has not changed at all. Shore change is a natural process but, quite often, the impacts of man through shore hardening or inlet stabilization come to dominate a given shore reach. In addition to documenting historical shorelines, the change in shore positions along the rivers and larger creeks in the Isle of Wight County will be quantified in this report. The shorelines of very irregular coasts, small creeks around inlets, and other complicated areas, will be shown but not quantified
