    Exact Critical Properties of the Multi-Component Interacting Fermion Model with Boundaries

    Exact critical properties of the one-dimensional SU(NN) interacting fermion model with open boundaries are studied by using the Bethe ansatz method. We derive the surface critical exponents of various correlation functions using boundary conformal field theory. They are classified into two types, i.e. the exponents for the chiral SU(NN) Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and those related to the orthogonality catastrophe. We discuss a possible application of the results to the photoemission (absorption) in the edge state of the fractional quantum Hall effect.Comment: 17 pages, RevTe

    The Dyad Symmetry Element of Epstein-Barr Virus Is a Dominant but Dispensable Replication Origin

    OriP, the latent origin of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), consists of two essential elements: the dyad symmetry (DS) and the family of repeats (FR). The function of these elements has been predominantly analyzed in plasmids transfected into transformed cells. Here, we examined the molecular functions of DS in its native genomic context and at an ectopic position in the mini-EBV episome. Mini-EBV plasmids contain 41% of the EBV genome including all information required for the proliferation of human B cells. Both FR and DS function independently of their genomic context. We show that DS is the most active origin of replication present in the mini-EBV genome regardless of its location, and it is characterized by the binding of the origin recognition complex (ORC) allowing subsequent replication initiation. Surprisingly, the integrity of oriP is not required for the formation of the pre-replicative complex (pre-RC) at or near DS. In addition we show that initiation events occurring at sites other than the DS are also limited to once per cell cycle and that they are ORC-dependent. The deletion of DS increases initiation from alternative origins, which are normally used very infrequently in the mini-EBV genome. The sequence-independent distribution of ORC-binding, pre-RC-assembly, and initiation patterns indicates that a large number of silent origins are present in the mini-EBV genome. We conclude that, in mini-EBV genomes lacking the DS element, the absence of a strong ORC binding site results in an increase of ORC binding at dispersed sites

    Stability of a metallic state in the two-orbital Hubbard model

    Electron correlations in the two-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling are investigated by combining dynamical mean field theory with the exact diagonalization method. We systematically study how the interplay of the intra- and inter-band Coulomb interactions, together with the Hund coupling, affects the metal-insulator transition. It is found that if the intra- and inter-band Coulomb interactions are nearly equal, the Fermi-liquid state is stabilized due to orbital fluctuations up to fairly large interactions, while the system is immediately driven to the Mott insulating phase away from this condition. The effects of the isotropic and anisotropic Hund coupling are also addressed.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure

    The electronic state of vortices in YBa2Cu3Oy investigated by complex surface impedance measurement

    The electromagnetic response to microwaves in the mixed state of YBa2Cu3Oy(YBCO) was measured in order to investigate the electronic state inside and outside the vortex core. The magnetic-field dependence of the complex surface impedance at low temperatures was in good agreement with a general vortex dynamics description assuming that the field-independent viscous damping force and the linear restoring force were acting on the vortices. In other words, both real and imaginary parts of the complex resistivity, \rho_1, and \rho_2, were linear in B. This is explained by theories for d-wave superconductors. Using analysis based on the Coffey-Clem description of the complex penetration depth, we estimated that the vortex viscosity \eta at 10 K was (4 \sim 5) \times 10^{-7} Ns/m^2. This value corresponds to \omega_0 \tau \sim 0.3 - 0.5, where \omega_0 and \tau are the minimal gap frequency and the quasiparticle lifetime in the vortex core, respectively. These results suggest that the vortex core in YBCO is in the moderately clean regime. Investigation of the moderately clean vortex core in high-temperature superconductors is significant because physically new effects may be expected due to d-wave characteristics and to the quantum nature of cuprate superconductors. The behavior of Z_s as a function of B across the first order transition (FOT) of the vortex lattice was also investigated. Unlike Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy (BSCCO), no distinct anomaly was observed around the FOT in YBCO. Our results suggest that the rapid increase of X_s due to the change of superfluid density at the FOT would be observed only in highly anisotropic two-dimensional vortex systems like BSCCO.     Primary placement technique of jejunostomy using the entristar™ skin-level gastrostomy tube in patients with esophageal cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We developed a skin-level jejunostomy tube (SLJT) procedure for patients undergoing esophagectomy using a skin-level gastrostomy tube (G-tube) (Entristar™; Tyco Healthcare, Mansfield, Mass), in order to improve their nutrition status and quality of life (QOL). We describe the procedure and the adverse effects of SLJT in patients with esophageal cancer (EC).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Over a 24-month period (March 2008 to March 2010), there were 16 patients (mean age: 61.8 years; age range: 49-75 years; 15 men, 1 woman) who had Stage II or III EC. Primary jejunostomy was performed under general anesthesia during esophagectomy. The technical success and the immediate and delayed complications of the procedure were recorded.</p> <p>Jejunostomy techniques</p> <p>SLJT placement using the G-tube (20Fr) was performed 20 cm from the Treitz ligament on the side opposing the jejunal mesenterium. The internal retention bolster was exteriorized through an incision in the abdominal wall. A single purse string suture using a 4-0 absorbable suture was performed. The internal retention bolster was then inserted into the jejunal lumen via the small incision. The intestine adjacent to the tube was anchored to the peritoneum using a single stitch.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The SLJT was successfully inserted in all 16 patients. No early complications were documented. Follow-up for a median of 107 days (range, 26-320 days) revealed leakage to the skin in four patients, including superficial wound infections in two patients. There were no cases of obstruction of the tube or procedure-related death.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This SLJT placement technique using the G-tube is a safe procedure in patients with EC and allows the creation of a long-term feeding jejunostomy.</p

    Abyssal fauna, benthic microbes, and organic matter quality across a range of trophic conditions in the western Pacific ocean

    Abstract The abyssal plain covers more than half the Earth's surface. The main food source to abyssal ecosystems is phytodetritus, which originates from phytoplankton in the surface ocean, and thus its variability to the seafloor is a major driver of abyssal ecosystem biomass and functioning. In this study, we conducted a comparative survey on organic matter (OM) quality and quantity in abyssal plain sediments and examined the distributions of megafauna, macrofauna, meiofauna, prokaryotes, and viruses in eutrophic (39°N), oligotrophic (1°N), and ultra-oligotrophic (12°N) areas of the western Pacific. We also analyzed stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of organisms at 39°N and 1°N to assess differences in benthic abyssal food-web structures with contrasting trophic states. Sediments collected at 39°N presented highest concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) and labile OM, and high diffusive oxygen uptake rates. By contrast, the lowest values were found at 12°N. Vertical distributions of sediment macrofauna, meiofauna, and prokaryotes matched with labile OM profiles. There were prominent differences in abundances of macro- and megafauna among stations with different OM fluxes, whereas the abundance of meiofauna and prokaryotes showed smaller differences among stations. Such differences could be explained by higher turnover rates of smaller organisms. Food-web structures of abyssal plains are likely influenced by both the type and size of primary producers in surface ocean. Our results underscore the crucial importance of OM fluxes and their compositions to the abundances and vertical profiles of labile OM and benthic biota in abyssal ecosystems

    Super Resolution Fluorescence Microscopy and Tracking of Bacterial Flotillin (Reggie) Paralogs Provide Evidence for Defined-Sized Protein Microdomains within the Bacterial Membrane but Absence of Clusters Containing Detergent-Resistant Proteins

    Biological membranes have been proposed to contain microdomains of a specific lipid composition, in which distinct groups of proteins are clustered. Flotillin-like proteins are conserved between pro—and eukaryotes, play an important function in several eukaryotic and bacterial cells, and define in vertebrates a type of so-called detergent-resistant microdomains. Using STED microscopy, we show that two bacterial flotillins, FloA and FloT, form defined assemblies with an average diameter of 85 to 110 nm in the model bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Interestingly, flotillin microdomains are of similar size in eukaryotic cells. The soluble domains of FloA form higher order oligomers of up to several hundred kDa in vitro, showing that like eukaryotic flotillins, bacterial assemblies are based in part on their ability to self-oligomerize. However, B. subtilis paralogs show significantly different diffusion rates, and consequently do not colocalize into a common microdomain. Dual colour time lapse experiments of flotillins together with other detergent-resistant proteins in bacteria show that proteins colocalize for no longer than a few hundred milliseconds, and do not move together. Our data reveal that the bacterial membrane contains defined-sized protein domains rather than functional microdomains dependent on flotillins. Based on their distinct dynamics, FloA and FloT confer spatially distinguishable activities, but do not serve as molecular scaffolds

    Computational Methods to Study Kinetics of DNA Replication

    New technologies such as DNA combing have led to the availability of large quanti-ties of data that describe the state of DNA while undergoing replication in S phase. In this chapter, we describe methods used to extract various parameters of replica-tion — fork velocity, origin initiation rate, fork density, numbers of potential and utilized origins — from such data. We first present a version of the technique that applies to “ideal ” data. We then show how to deal with a number of real-world complications, such as the asynchrony of starting times of a population of cells, the finite length of fragments used in the analysis, and the finite amount of DNA in a chromosome.     Comparison of ankle-brachial pressure index and pulse wave velocity as markers of cognitive function in a community-dwelling population

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Vascular factors have been implicated in the development of cognitive decline and dementia. The purpose of this study is to determine the association of the Ankle Brachial pressure Index (ABI) and brachial-ankle Pulse Wave Velocity (ba-PWV) to cognitive impairment in a community-dwelling population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The ABI and ba-PWV were measured using the volume-plethymographic apparatus in 388 subjects aged 60 years old and over. The Mini-Mental State Examination was also employed to measure global cognitive status. The effectiveness of the ABI and ba-PWV as putative markers of cognitive impairment were determined by using a multiple logistic regression analysis after adjusting for confounding factors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Subjects with poor cognition were significantly older and less well educated than those with normal cognition. According to the multiple logistic regression analysis, the lowest ABI tertile was found to be a significant independent risk factor (OR = 3.19, 95% CI = 1.30 to 7.82) of the cognitive impairment, whereas the highest brachial-ankle PWV tertile was not.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>A low ABI was an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older populations, whereas a high ba-PWV may not be. Further research will be required to analyze ABI and PWV with greater accuracy.</p
