Non-interacting tension control in a multi-span web transport system

    Get PDF
A non-interacting tension control algorithm is proposed to reject the disturbance due to the interaction between neighboring processing sections. An 'auxiliary dynamic model' is derived. And an 'auxiliary controller' is designed with the concept of feedback and feedforward control using the auxiliary dynamic model such that it can reject disturbances from the upstream as well as down stream web span. The performance of this controller is compared with that of an existing controller. When the proposed controller is used, the tension in each span is successfully regulated even in a highly interacting multi-span system with less control effort than that of an existing control method.Mechanical and Aerospace Engineerin

Integrative Medicine for Postoperative Patients: A Survey of Korean Medicine Doctors

    Get PDF
The purpose of this survey was to document the experience of Korean Medicine doctors (KMD) who provided postoperative care to patients through integrative medicine and to understand their opinions about integrative medicine utilization. Three researchers (two with a KMD license) of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine conducted the survey. The questionnaire was distributed via e-mail to the 17,041 members of the Association of Korean Medicine in 2015. In total, 487ā€‰KMD answered the questionnaires. The majority of respondents worked in a Korean Medicine (KM) clinic, KM hospital, or long-term care hospitals (94.7%). The respondents mostly treated patients after musculoskeletal (26.7%), spinal (23.7%), or neuropathic surgery (22.2%). Patients predominantly experienced pain (23.0%), fatigue and tiredness (17.4%), delayed scar recovery (13.7%), and paralysis (13.0%). We analyzed subgroups in accordance with institution of employment, specialization, and clinical experience. Most KMD wanted to utilize integrative medicine for postoperative care of patients (92.6%). Moreover, a relatively active collaboration was noted in long-term care hospitals (mean rate: 60.73% [95% CI: 42.25 to 79.20]). Further studies and clinical trials are needed to determine whether integrative medicine is essential for providing postoperative care to Korean patients

Auto taper tension profile maker in a converting machine

Winding is an integral operation in almost every web handling processes. Center-wounding are suitable and a general scheme in winding systems. However, the internal stresses within center-wound rolls can cause damage such as buckling, spoking, cinching, etc. Wound roll quality and performance are known to be related to distribution of in-roll stresses. It is therefore necessary to analyze the relationship between taper tension in winding section and internal stress distribution within center-wound roll to prevent the potential winding failure (starring, buckling, telescoping, etc.).In this study, a new taper tension control method for producing high quality wound roll was developed. The new method was induced from analyzing the winding mechanism by using the stress model in center-wound rolls, nip induced tension model, taper tension profile-telescoping relationship, and taper tension type-internal stresses relationship, etc. Auto taper tension profile making method for avoiding the damage (telescoping, buckling, cinching, etc.) is presented. The experimental results show that the proposed method is very useful

Transduction of artificial transcriptional regulatory proteins into human cells

Protein transduction (PT) is a method for delivering proteins into mammalian cells. PT is accomplished by linking a small peptide tagā€”called a PT domain (PTD)ā€”to a protein of interest, which generates a functional fusion protein that can penetrate efficiently into mammalian cells. In order to study the functions of a transcription factor (TF) of interest, expression plasmids that encode the TF often are transfected into mammalian cells. However, the efficiency of DNA transfection is highly variable among different cell types and is usually very low in primary cells, stem cells and tumor cells. Zinc-finger transcription factors (ZF-TFs) can be tailor-made to target almost any gene in the human genome. However, the extremely low efficiency of DNA transfection into cancer cells, both in vivo and in vitro, limits the utility of ZF-TFs. Here, we report on an artificial ZF-TF that has been fused to a well-characterized PTD from the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) transcriptional activator protein, Tat. This ZF-TF targeted the endogenous promoter of the human VEGF-A gene. The PTD-attached ZF-TF was delivered efficiently into human cells in vitro. In addition, the VEGF-A-specific transcriptional repressor retarded the growth rate of tumor cells in a mouse xenograft experiment

First results from the HAYSTAC axion search

The axion is a well-motivated cold dark matter (CDM) candidate first postulated to explain the absence of CPCP violation in the strong interactions. CDM axions may be detected via their resonant conversion into photons in a "haloscope" detector: a tunable high-QQ microwave cavity maintained at cryogenic temperature, immersed a strong magnetic field, and coupled to a low-noise receiver. This dissertation reports on the design, commissioning, and first operation of the Haloscope at Yale Sensitive to Axion CDM (HAYSTAC), a new detector designed to search for CDM axions with masses above 2020 Ī¼eV\mu\mathrm{eV}. I also describe the analysis procedure developed to derive limits on axion CDM from the first HAYSTAC data run, which excluded axion models with two-photon coupling gaĪ³Ī³ā‰³2Ɨ10āˆ’14g_{a\gamma\gamma} \gtrsim 2\times10^{-14} GeVāˆ’1\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}, a factor of 2.3 above the benchmark KSVZ model, over the mass range 23.55<ma<24.023.55 < m_a < 24.0 Ī¼eV\mu\mathrm{eV}. This result represents two important achievements. First, it demonstrates cosmologically relevant sensitivity an order of magnitude higher in mass than any existing direct limits. Second, by incorporating a dilution refrigerator and Josephson parametric amplifier, HAYSTAC has demonstrated total noise approaching the standard quantum limit for the first time in a haloscope axion search.Comment: Ph.D. thesis. 346 pages, 58 figures. Spectrum of Eleven-dimensional Supergravity on a PP-wave Background

We calculate the spectrum of the linearized supergravity around the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background in eleven dimensions. The resulting spectrum agrees with that of zero-mode Hamiltonian of a supermembrane theory on the pp-wave background. We also discuss the connection with the Kaluza-Klein zero modes of AdS_4 x S^7 background.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, LaTeX2e, typos correcte
