    Productivity Analysis Method Using Partial Productivity and Total Productivity in the Framework of Industrial Business Development Tofu Craftsmen in Manado City

    This entrepreneurial role in economic development includes increasing per capita output and income which includes initiatives and changes in business structures and society. The main problem is the low business productivity that affects the contribution of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the regional economy, especially in the city of Manado. This study aims to measure the level of partial productivity and total productivity of the Tofu industry craftsmen in Manado City. The subject of this study is the owner of the tofu industry craftsman factory in Manado City. Whereas the object of the research is the business productivity of the Tofu industry, including: 1) Raw Materials, 2) Labor, 3) Materials, 4) Energy, and 5) Capital for 5 (five) weeks. Data analysis in this study uses a method of measuring productivity ratios. The result of the research and measurements show the total productivity level of tofu producers experiencing fluctuations and tends to decrease with indexes ranging from 1.04 % to 0.90% per production.     Prevalence and distribution of the fabella: a radiographic study in Turkish subjects

    Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the plain knee radiographs in Turkish subjects in order to determine the prevalence of the fabella and analyse the differences between age, gender, laterality and its symmetry pattern. Materials and methods: Bilateral antero-posterior and lateral knee radiographs of 500 patients (250 male and 250 female subjects, 1000 knee radiographs) were randomly selected from the clinical database and retrospectively evaluated. Data on patient age, gender, and knee laterality (right–left) were evaluated from hospital records. The differences between the sesamoid bones at a particular location and the side, sex and age groups were analysed. Results: The overall prevalence of the fabella (unilateral or bilateral) was 22.8% (114 subjects). The fabella was present unilaterally in 38 (7.6%) subjects, while it was present bilaterally in 76 (15.2%) subjects. The prevalence of the fabella was similar between the body sides. The prevalence of the fabella was also similar between genders (unilateral or bilateral cases) and age groups. Conclusions: We examined the prevalence, symmetry pattern, age and gender differences in Turkish population. It is the first study performed on Turkish population with the largest sample in current literature. Prevalence of fabella is found to be 22.8% which is quite similar with other Caucasian ethnic populations

    The value of Nigella sativa in the treatment of experimentally induced rhinosinusitis

    Obiettivo del presente studio è stato quello di investigare leffetto della Nigella sativa e della cefalexina nel trattamento della rinosinusite batterica indotta in setting sperimentale. La rinosinusite batterica è stata indotta mediante stafilococco aureo. I conigli sono stati suddivisi in 5 gruppi; uno di controllo (n = 6), N. sativa 50 mg/kg/d (n = 6), N. sativa 100 mg/kg/d (n = 6), N. sativa 200 mg/kg/d (n = 6), e cefalexina 20 mg/kg/d (n = 6). La N. sativa è stata somministrata per via orale per 7 giorni. Lo stesso volume di soluzione salina (% 0,9 NaCl) è stato quindi somministrato al gruppo di controllo per lo stesso periodo di tempo. Dopo il periodo di trattamento i campioni di mucosa dei seni mascellari sono stati valutati utilizzando metodologie istopatologiche e stereologiche. La metà dei campioni di mucosa del seno mascellare sono stati congelati a -80°C per una successiva analisi dei livelli di ossido nitrico. Lanalisi patologica ha rivelato un intenso processo infiammatorio in atto nei conigli trattati con sola soluzione salina. Solo un lieve grado di infiammazione è stato invece rilevato nei conigli nei gruppi trattati con cefalexina, N. sativa 100 mg/kg/d, e N. sativa 200 mg/kg/d. Il livello di ossido nitrico, elevato nel gruppo placebo, è risultato invece essere ridotto negli altri gruppi. La N. sativa potrebbe prevenire i ambiamenti istopatologici indotti dalla rinosinusite mediante una riduzione dei livelli di ossido nitrico con andamento dose dipendente, e potrebbe essere usata nel trattamento della rinosinusite

    Decoding human mental states by whole-head EEG+fNIRS during category fluency task performance

    Objective: Concurrent scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which we refer to as EEG+fNIRS, promises greater accuracy than the individual modalities while remaining nearly as convenient as EEG. We sought to quantify the hybrid system's ability to decode mental states and compare it with unimodal systems. Approach: We recorded from healthy volunteers taking the category fluency test and applied machine learning techniques to the data. Main results: EEG+fNIRS's decoding accuracy was greater than that of its subsystems, partly due to the new type of neurovascular features made available by hybrid data. Significance: Availability of an accurate and practical decoding method has potential implications for medical diagnosis, brain-computer interface design, and neuroergonomics

    Integromic analysis of genetic variation and gene expression identifies networks for cardiovascular disease phenotypes

    BACKGROUND - : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) reflects a highly coordinated complex of traits. Although genome-wide association studies have reported numerous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to be associated with CVD, the role of most of these variants in disease processes remains unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS - : We built a CVD network using 1512 SNPs associated with 21 CVD traits in genome-wide association studies (at P≤5×10) and cross-linked different traits by virtue of their shared SNP associations. We then explored whole blood gene expression in relation to these SNPs in 5257 participants in the Framingham Heart Study. At a false discovery rate <0.05, we identified 370 cis-expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs; SNPs associated with altered expression of nearby genes) and 44 trans-eQTLs (SNPs associated with altered expression of remote genes). The eQTL network revealed 13 CVD-related modules. Searching for association of eQTL genes with CVD risk factors (lipids, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and body mass index) in the same individuals, we found examples in which the expression of eQTL genes was significantly associated with these CVD phenotypes. In addition, mediation tests suggested that a subset of SNPs previously associated with CVD phenotypes in genome-wide association studies may exert their function by altering expression of eQTL genes (eg, LDLR and PCSK7), which in turn may promote interindividual variation in phenotypes. CONCLUSIONS - : Using a network approach to analyze CVD traits, we identified complex networks of SNP-phenotype and SNP-transcript connections. Integrating the CVD network with phenotypic data, we identified biological pathways that may provide insights into potential drug targets for treatment or prevention of CVD

    Sense of place in the changing process of house form: Case studies from Ankara, Turkey

    This paper aims to investigate the impact of typomorphological changes of residential environments on residents’ sense of place’. Seven housing developments representing different types introduced in Ankara, Turkey since the late 19th-century are selected as case studies. Their morphological characters at the building, street and neighbourhood scales are examined, and typological transformations among the cases in terms of the degrees of continuity are identified. The paper proposes a conceptual model consisting of ten indicators to assess sense of place at the building, street and neighbourhood scales of the residents of the seven cases. The scores of sense of place are generated through structured interviews with the residents and analysed in SPSS. The results show that sense of place is negatively affected by typomorphological changes over time, particularly when mutational changes occur. Continuity in typomorphological transformation helps to maintain sense of place at a desirable level. Furthermore, physical changes at the street and neighbourhood scales have larger impact on sense of place than that at the building scale. The research thus suggests that planning and design should be responsive to traditional types in residential development, particularly at the street and neighbourhood scales to maintain residents’ sense of place

    c-REDUCE: Incorporating sequence conservation to detect motifs that correlate with expression

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Computational methods for characterizing novel transcription factor binding sites search for sequence patterns or "motifs" that appear repeatedly in genomic regions of interest. Correlation-based motif finding strategies are used to identify motifs that correlate with expression data and do not rely on promoter sequences from a pre-determined set of genes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this work, we describe a method for predicting motifs that combines the correlation-based strategy with phylogenetic footprinting, where motifs are identified by evaluating orthologous sequence regions from multiple species. Our method, c-REDUCE, can account for variability at a motif position inferred from evolutionary information. c-REDUCE has been tested on ChIP-chip data for yeast transcription factors and on gene expression data in <it>Drosophila</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results indicate that utilizing sequence conservation information in addition to correlation-based methods improves the identification of known motifs.</p

    Chemotherapy with BCNU in recurrent glioma: Analysis of clinical outcome and side effects in chemotherapy-naïve patients

    Background: To date, standardized strategies for the treatment of recurrent glioma are lacking. Chemotherapy with the alkylating agent BCNU (1,3-bis (2-chloroethyl)-1-nitroso-urea) is a therapeutic option even though its efficacy and safety, particularly the risk of pulmonary fibrosis, remains controversial. To address these issues, we performed a retrospective analysis on clinical outcome and side effects of BCNU-based chemotherapy in recurrent glioma. Methods: Survival data of 34 mostly chemotherapy-naïve glioblastoma patients treated with BCNU at 1st relapse were compared to 29 untreated control patients, employing a multiple Cox regression model which considered known prognostic factors including MGMT promoter hypermethylation. Additionally, medical records of 163 patients treated with BCNU for recurrent glioma WHO grade II to IV were retrospectively evaluated for BCNU-related side effects classified according to the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 2.0. Results: In recurrent glioblastoma, multiple regression survival analysis revealed a significant benefit of BCNU-based chemotherapy on survival after relapse (p = 0.02; HR = 0.48; 95 % CI = 0.26–0.89) independent of known clinical and molecular prognostic factors. Exploratory analyses suggested that survival benefit was most pronounced in MGMT-hypermethylated, BCNU-treated patients. Moreover, BCNU was well tolerated by 46 % of the 163 patients analyzed for side effects; otherwise, predominantly mild side effects occurred (CTCAE I/II; 45 %). Severe side effects CTCAE III/IV were observed in 9 % of patients including severe hematotoxicity, thromboembolism, intracranial hemorrhage and injection site reaction requiring surgical intervention. One patient presented with a clinically apparent pulmonary fibrosis CTCAE IV requiring temporary mechanical ventilation. Conclusion: In this study, BCNU was rarely associated with severe side effects, particularly pulmonary toxicity, and, in case of recurrent glioblastoma, even conferred a favorable outcome. Therefore BCNU appears to be an appropriate alternative to other nitrosoureas although the efficacy against newer drugs needs further evaluation

    Intraoperative electrocortical stimulation of Brodman area 4: a 10-year analysis of 255 cases

    BACKGROUND: Brain tumor surgery is limited by the risk of postoperative neurological deficits. Intraoperative neurophysiological examination techniques, which are based on the electrical excitability of the human brain cortex, are thus still indispensable for surgery in eloquent areas such as the primary motor cortex (Brodman Area 4). METHODS: This study analyzed the data obtained from a total of 255 cerebral interventions for lesions with direct contact to (121) or immediately adjacent to (134) Brodman Area 4 in order to optimize stimulation parameters and to search for direct correlation between intraoperative potential changes and specific surgical maneuvers when using monopolar cortex stimulation (MCS) for electrocortical mapping and continuous intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. RESULTS: Compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) were recorded from the thenar muscles and forearm flexors in accordance with the large representational area of the hand and forearm in Brodman Area 4. By optimizing the stimulation parameters in two steps (step 1: stimulation frequency and step 2: train sequence) MCS was successful in 91% (232/255) of the cases. Statistical analysis of the parameters latency, potential width and amplitude showed spontaneous latency prolongations and abrupt amplitude reductions as a reliable warning signal for direct involvement of the motor cortex or motor pathways. CONCLUSION: MCS must be considered a stimulation technique that enables reliable qualitative analysis of the recorded potentials, which may thus be regarded as directly predictive. Nevertheless, like other intraoperative neurophysiological examination techniques, MCS has technical, anatomical and neurophysiological limitations. A variety of surgical and non-surgical influences can be reason for false positive or false negative measurements
