Field-theoretic description of ionic crystallization in the restricted primitive model

Effects of charge-density fluctuations on a phase behavior of the restricted primitive model (RPM) are studied within a field-theoretic formalism. We focus on a λ\lambda-line of continuous transitions between charge-ordered and charge-disordered phases that is observed in several mean-field (MF) theories, but is absent in simulation results. In our study the RPM is reduced to a ϕ6\phi^6 theory, and a fluctuation contribution to a grand thermodynamic potential is obtained by generalizing the Brazovskii approach. We find that in a presence of fluctuations the λ\lambda-line disappears. Instead, a fluctuation-induced first-order transition to a charge-ordered phase appears in the same region of a phase diagram, where the liquid -- ionic-crystal transition is obtained in simulations. Our results indicate that the charge-ordered phase should be identified with an ionic crystal.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figure

We have designed, fabricated and characterized an InP-based membrane photodetector on an SOI wafer containing a Si-wiring photonic circuit. New results on RF characterization up to 20 GHz are presented. The detector fabrication is compatible with wafer scale processing steps, guaranteeing compatibility towards future generation electronic IC processing

Serotonergic system in vivo with [C-11]DASB PET scans in GTP-cyclohydrolase deficient dopa-responsive dystonia patients

GTP-cyclohydrolase deficiency in dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD) patients impairs the biosynthesis of dopamine, but also of serotonin. The high prevalence of non-motor symptoms suggests involvement of the serotonergic pathway. Our study aimed to investigate the serotonergic system in vivo in the brain of`DRD patients and correlate this to (non-)motor symptoms. Dynamic [(11)C]DASB PET scans, a marker of serotonin transporter availability, were performed. Ten DRD, 14 cervical dystonia patients and 12 controls were included. Univariate- and network-analysis did not show differences in binding between DRD patients compared to controls. Sleep disturbances were correlated with binding in the dorsal raphe nucleus (all participants: r(s) = 0.45, p = 0.04; patients: r(s) = 0.64, p = 0.05) and participants with a psychiatric disorder had a lower binding in the hippocampus (all participants: p = 0.00; patients: p = 0.06). Post-hoc analysis with correction for psychiatric co-morbidity showed a significant difference in binding in the hippocampus between DRD patients and controls (p = 0.00). This suggests that psychiatric symptoms might mask the altered serotonergic metabolism in DRD patients, but definite conclusions are difficult as psychiatry is considered part of the phenotype. We hypothesize that an imbalance between different neurotransmitter systems is responsible for the non-motor symptoms, and further research investigating multiple neurotransmitters and psychiatry in DRD is necessary

A Mach-Zehnder interferometer with 6.0 mm arm length difference was realised on InP. The design is very compact, using deeply etched waveguides and circular bends with 50 mu m radius. The devices show a sinusoidal frequency response with 13.5 GHz period and extinction ratios up to 20 d

Magnetic phenomena in 5d transition metal nanowires

We have carried out fully relativistic full-potential, spin-polarized, all-electron density-functional calculations for straight, monatomic nanowires of the 5d transition and noble metals Os, Ir, Pt and Au. We find that, of these metal nanowires, Os and Pt have mean-field magnetic moments for values of the bond length at equilibrium. In the case of Au and Ir, the wires need to be slightly stretched in order to spin polarize. An analysis of the band structures of the wires indicate that the superparamagnetic state that our calculations suggest will affect the conductance through the wires -- though not by a large amount -- at least in the absence of magnetic domain walls. It should thus lead to a characteristic temperature- and field dependent conductance, and may also cause a significant spin polarization of the transmitted current.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Common Origin for Surface Reconstruction and the Formation of Chains of Metal Atoms

    Get PDF
During the fracture of nanocontacts gold spontaneously forms freely suspended chains of atoms, which is not observed for the iso-electronic noble metals Ag and Cu. Au also differs from Ag and Cu in forming reconstructions at its low-index surfaces. Using mechanically controllable break junctions we show that all the 5d metals that show similar reconstructions (Ir, Pt and Au) also form chains of atoms, while both properties are absent in the 4d neighbor elements (Rh, Pd, Ag), indicating a common origin for these two phenomena. A competition between s and d bonding is proposed as an explanation

Towards an Asymptotic-Safety Scenario for Chiral Yukawa Systems

We search for asymptotic safety in a Yukawa system with a chiral U(NL)L⊗U(1)RU(N_L)_L\otimes U(1)_R symmetry, serving as a toy model for the standard-model Higgs sector. Using the functional RG as a nonperturbative tool, the leading-order derivative expansion exhibits admissible non-Ga\ssian fixed-points for 1≤NL≤571 \leq N_L \leq 57 which arise from a conformal threshold behavior induced by self-balanced boson-fermion fluctuations. If present in the full theory, the fixed-point would solve the triviality problem. Moreover, as one fixed point has only one relevant direction even with a reduced hierarchy problem, the Higgs mass as well as the top mass are a prediction of the theory in terms of the Higgs vacuum expectation value. In our toy model, the fixed point is destabilized at higher order due to massless Goldstone and fermion fluctuations, which are particular to our model and have no analogue in the standard model.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure
