Managerial ambidexterity and the cultural toolkit in project delivery

    Get PDF
Research has established that ambidextrous organizations can successfully outperform their non-ambidextrous counterparts through exploitative and exploratory activities. However, there remains a scarcity of research on how managers orchestrate ambidexterity at the operational level, particularly in project delivery. Drawing on 55 qualitative interviews with middle managers on two engineering projects, we examine how managerial ambidexterity is enacted at the project level. We find that middle managers enable their own exploitative, exploratory and ambidextrous behaviors by invoking a repertoire of values selected from their organization's cultural toolkit, which serve as cultural resources for action. We discuss how the cultural toolkit perspective can inform the relationship between managerial actions in day-to-day operations and organizational ambidexterity. Implications for theory and practice are presented

    SUSY Flavour at LHC7

The current 7 TeV run of the LHC experiment shall be able to probe gluino and squark masses up to values of about 1 TeV. Assuming that hints for SUSY are found by the end of a 2 fb1^{-1} run, we explore the flavour constraints on the parameter space of the CMSSM, with and without massive neutrinos. In particular, we focus on decays that might have been measured by the time the run is concluded, such as BsμμB_s\to\mu\mu and μeγ\mu\to e\gamma. We also briefly show the impact such a collider--flavour interplay would have on a Flavoured CMSSM.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. China is investing heavily in leading edge and innovative information technologies to support its continuing economic growth. At the same time, Chinese businesses increasingly need to innovate with IT to create competitive difference and expand internationally. However, to what extent has China developed the capabilities to develop IT innovations and adopt them to generate value and competitive difference? This panel session will build learning on the capabilities both of the software industry and of businesses in China around IT innovation. To create a rich picture of maturity, skills and management processes concerning innovation, this multi-disciplinary session will bring together diverse perspectives from research and practice. By drawing on experience from Europe and the USA, as well as China itself, it will also reflect on key differences and lessons which can be learnt from China’s vast IT investment and rapid acquisition of skills

Blending of nanoscale and microscale in uniform large-area sculptured thin-film architectures

The combination of large thickness (>3>3 μ\mum), large--area uniformity (75 mm diameter), high growth rate (up to 0.4 μ\mum/min) in assemblies of complex--shaped nanowires on lithographically defined patterns has been achieved for the first time. The nanoscale and the microscale have thus been blended together in sculptured thin films with transverse architectures. SiOx_x (x2x\approx 2) nanowires were grown by electron--beam evaporation onto silicon substrates both with and without photoresist lines (1--D arrays) and checkerboard (2--D arrays) patterns. Atomic self--shadowing due to oblique--angle deposition enables the nanowires to grow continuously, to change direction abruptly, and to maintain constant cross--sectional diameter. The selective growth of nanowire assemblies on the top surfaces of both 1--D and 2--D arrays can be understood and predicted using simple geometrical shadowing equations.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure

Improving Confidence in Crystal Structure Solutions Using NMR Crystallography: The Case of β-Piroxicam

    Get PDF
NMR crystallographic techniques are used to validate a structure of β-piroxicam determined from powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) with a relatively poor R-factor. Geometry optimization of PXRD- and single-crystal XRD- derived structures results in convergence to the same energy of the structures, with minimal atomic displacements, and good agreement of gauge-included projector augmented wave (GIPAW) calculated and experimentally determined NMR 1H, 13C, and 15N chemical shifts, and 14N quadrupolar parameters. Calculations on isolated molecules combined with 2D magic-angle spinning (MAS) 1H double-quantum (DQ) and 14N–1H NMR experiments confirm the 3D packing arrangement of β-piroxicam. NMR crystallography is shown to be an effective means of validating crystal structures that might otherwise be considered sceptically on the basis of diffraction data alone

The Functional DRD3 Ser9Gly Polymorphism (rs6280) Is Pleiotropic, Affecting Reward as Well as Movement

Abnormalities of motivation and behavior in the context of reward are a fundamental component of addiction and mood disorders. Here we test the effect of a functional missense mutation in the dopamine 3 receptor (DRD3) gene (ser9gly, rs6280) on reward-associated dopamine (DA) release in the striatum. Twenty-six healthy controls (HCs) and 10 unmedicated subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD) completed two positron emission tomography (PET) scans with [11C]raclopride using the bolus plus constant infusion method. On one occasion subjects completed a sensorimotor task (control condition) and on another occasion subjects completed a gambling task (reward condition). A linear regression analysis controlling for age, sex, diagnosis, and self-reported anhedonia indicated that during receipt of unpredictable monetary reward the glycine allele was associated with a greater reduction in D2/3 receptor binding (i.e., increased reward-related DA release) in the middle (anterior) caudate (p<0.01) and the ventral striatum (p<0.05). The possible functional effect of the ser9gly polymorphism on DA release is consistent with previous work demonstrating that the glycine allele yields D3 autoreceptors that have a higher affinity for DA and display more robust intracellular signaling. Preclinical evidence indicates that chronic stress and aversive stimulation induce activation of the DA system, raising the possibility that the glycine allele, by virtue of its facilitatory effect on striatal DA release, increases susceptibility to hyperdopaminergic responses that have previously been associated with stress, addiction, and psychosis

    Polyhedral Cosmic Strings

Quantum field theory is discussed in M\"obius corner kaleidoscopes using the method of images. The vacuum average of the stress-energy tensor of a free field is derived and is shown to be a simple sum of straight cosmic string expressions, the strings running along the edges of the corners. It does not seem possible to set up a spin-half theory easily.Comment: 15 pages, 4 text figures not include

Economic liberalization and the antecedents of top management teams: evidence from Turkish 'big' business

    Get PDF
There has been an increased interest in the last two decades in top management teams (TMTs) of business firms. Much of the research, however, has been US-based and concerned primarily with TMT effects on organizational outcomes. The present study aims to expand this literature by examining the antecedents of top team composition in the context of macro-level economic change in a late-industrializing country. The post-1980 trade and market reforms in Turkey provided the empirical setting. Drawing upon the literatures on TMT and chief executive characteristics together with punctuated equilibrium models of change and institutional theory, the article develops the argument that which firm-level factors affect which attributes of TMT formations varies across the early and late stages of economic liberalization. Results of the empirical investigation of 71 of the largest industrial firms in Turkey broadly supported the hypotheses derived from this premise. In the early stages of economic liberalization the average age and average organizational tenure of TMTs were related to the export orientation of firms, whereas in later stages, firm performance became a major predictor of these team attributes. Educational background characteristics of teams appeared to be under stronger institutional pressures, altering in different ways in the face of macro-level change

Negotiation in strategy making teams : group support systems and the process of cognitive change

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the use of a Group Support System (GSS) to explore at a micro level some of the processes manifested when a group is negotiating strategy-processes of social and psychological negotiation. It is based on data from a series of interventions with senior management teams of three operating companies comprising a multi-national organization, and with a joint meeting subsequently involving all of the previous participants. The meetings were concerned with negotiating a new strategy for the global organization. The research involved the analysis of detailed time series data logs that exist as a result of using a GSS that is a reflection of cognitive theory

Relativistic Quantum Information in Detectors-Field Interactions

We review Unruh-DeWitt detectors and other models of detector-field interaction in a relativistic quantum field theory setting as a tool for extracting detector-detector, field-field and detector-field correlation functions of interest in quantum information science, from entanglement dynamics to quantum teleportation. We in particular highlight the contrast between the results obtained from linear perturbation theory which can be justified provided switching effects are properly accounted for, and the nonperturbative effects from available analytic expressions which incorporate the backreaction effects of the quantum field on the detector behaviour.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures.
