Model Adaptation with Synthetic and Real Data for Semantic Dense Foggy Scene Understanding
This work addresses the problem of semantic scene understanding under dense
fog. Although considerable progress has been made in semantic scene
understanding, it is mainly related to clear-weather scenes. Extending
recognition methods to adverse weather conditions such as fog is crucial for
outdoor applications. In this paper, we propose a novel method, named
Curriculum Model Adaptation (CMAda), which gradually adapts a semantic
segmentation model from light synthetic fog to dense real fog in multiple
steps, using both synthetic and real foggy data. In addition, we present three
other main stand-alone contributions: 1) a novel method to add synthetic fog to
real, clear-weather scenes using semantic input; 2) a new fog density
estimator; 3) the Foggy Zurich dataset comprising real foggy images,
with pixel-level semantic annotations for images with dense fog. Our
experiments show that 1) our fog simulation slightly outperforms a
state-of-the-art competing simulation with respect to the task of semantic
foggy scene understanding (SFSU); 2) CMAda improves the performance of
state-of-the-art models for SFSU significantly by leveraging unlabeled real

Enhancement of Retinal Fundus Images via Pixel Color Amplification
We propose a pixel color amplification theory and family of enhancement
methods to facilitate segmentation tasks on retinal images. Our novel
re-interpretation of the image distortion model underlying dehazing theory
shows how three existing priors commonly used by the dehazing community and a
novel fourth prior are related. We utilize the theory to develop a family of
enhancement methods for retinal images, including novel methods for whole image
brightening and darkening. We show a novel derivation of the Unsharp Masking
algorithm. We evaluate the enhancement methods as a pre-processing step to a
challenging multi-task segmentation problem and show large increases in
performance on all tasks, with Dice score increases over a no-enhancement
baseline by as much as 0.491. We provide evidence that our enhancement
preprocessing is useful for unbalanced and difficult data. We show that the

Symptoms of somatization as a rapid screening tool for mitochondrial dysfunction in depression
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Aims</p> <p>Somatic symptomatology is common in depression, and is often attributed to the Freudian-inspired concept of "somatization". While the same somatic symptoms and depression are common in mitochondrial disease, in cases with concurrent mood symptoms the diagnosis of a mitochondrial disorder and related therapy are typically delayed for many years. A short screening tool that can identify patients with depression at high risk for having underlying mitochondrial dysfunction is presented.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Six items of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) were found to differentiate among 21 chronically-depressed Swedish subjects with low versus normal muscle ATP production rates. A screening tool consisting of the six KSP questions was validated in the relatives of American genetics clinic patients, including in 24 matrilineal relatives in families with maternally inherited mitochondrial disease and in 30 control relatives.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the depressed Swedish patients, the screening tool was positive in 13/14 with low and 1/7 with normal mitochondrial function (P = 0.0003). Applied to the American relatives of patients, the screening tool was positive in 13/24 matrilineal relatives and in 1/30 control relatives (P = 2 × 10<sup>-5</sup>).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our preliminary data suggest that a small number of specific somatic-related questions can be constructed into a valid screening tool for cases at high risk for having a component of energy metabolism in their pathogenesis.</p
Quality and Safety Aspects of Infant Nutrition
Quality and safety aspects of infant nutrition are of key importance for child health, but oftentimes they do not get much attention by health care professionals whose interest tends to focus on functional benefits of early nutrition. Unbalanced diets and harmful food components induce particularly high risks for untoward effects in infants because of their rapid growth, high nutrient needs, and their typical dependence on only one or few foods during the first months of life. The concepts, standards and practices that relate to infant food quality and safety were discussed at a scientific workshop organized by the Child Health Foundation and the Early Nutrition Academy jointly with the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and a summary is provided here. The participants reviewed past and current issues on quality and safety, the role of different stakeholders, and recommendations to avert future issues. It was concluded that a high level of quality and safety is currently achieved, but this is no reason for complacency. The food industry carries the primary responsibility for the safety and suitability of their products, including the quality of composition, raw materials and production processes. Introduction of new or modified products should be preceded by a thorough science based review of suitability and safety by an independent authority. Food safety events should be managed on an international basis. Global collaboration of food producers, food-safety authorities, paediatricians and scientists is needed to efficiently exchange information and to best protect public health. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Polarization-Correlated Photon Pairs from a Single Quantum Dot
Polarization correlation in a linear basis, but not entanglement, is observed
between the biexciton and single-exciton photons emitted by a single InAs
quantum dot in a two-photon cascade. The results are well described
quantitatively by a probabilistic model that includes two decay paths for a
biexciton through a non-degenerate pair of one-exciton states, with the
polarization of the emitted photons depending on the decay path. The results
show that spin non-degeneracy due to quantum-dot asymmetry is a significant

A semiconductor source of triggered entangled photon pairs?
The realisation of a triggered entangled photon source will be of great
importance in quantum information, including for quantum key distribution and
quantum computation. We show here that: 1) the source reported in ``A
semiconductor source of triggered entangled photon pairs''[1. Stevenson et al.,
Nature 439, 179 (2006)]} is not entangled; 2) the entanglement indicators used
in Ref. 1 are inappropriate, relying on assumptions invalidated by their own
data; and 3) even after simulating subtraction of the significant quantity of

Erythrocyte Transketolase Activity, Markers of Cardiac Dysfunction and the Diagnosis of Infantile Beriberi
Infantile beriberi, or clinical thiamin (vitamin B1) deficiency in infants, is a forgotten disease in Asia, where ∼100 years ago it was a major public health problem. Children aged ∼2–3 months present in cardiac failure but usually rapidly improve if given thiamin injections. It remains relatively common in Vientiane, Lao PDR (Laos) probably because of prolonged intra- and post-partum maternal food avoidance behaviours. There has been very little recent research on the best diagnostic techniques. We conducted a case control study of 47 infants with beriberi and age-matched afebrile and febrile controls in Vientiane. The conventional measures of thiamin deficiency, basal and activated erythrocyte transketolase activities (ETK) and activation (α) coefficients, were assayed along with three markers of cardiac dysfunction - plasma brain natriuretic peptide, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, and troponin T. Basal ETK was a better biochemical marker of infantile beriberi than the activation coefficient.
