Calibration and performance of the photon sensor response of FACT -- The First G-APD Cherenkov telescope
The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) is the first in-operation test of
the performance of silicon photo detectors in Cherenkov Astronomy. For more
than two years it is operated on La Palma, Canary Islands (Spain), for the
purpose of long-term monitoring of astrophysical sources. For this, the
performance of the photo detectors is crucial and therefore has been studied in
great detail. Special care has been taken for their temperature and voltage
dependence implementing a correction method to keep their properties stable.
Several measurements have been carried out to monitor the performance. The
measurements and their results are shown, demonstrating the stability of the
gain below the percent level. The resulting stability of the whole system is
discussed, nicely demonstrating that silicon photo detectors are perfectly
suited for the usage in Cherenkov telescopes, especially for long-term
monitoring purpose
FACT -- The G-APD revolution in Cherenkov astronomy
Since two years, the FACT telescope is operating on the Canary Island of La
Palma. Apart from its purpose to serve as a monitoring facility for the
brightest TeV blazars, it was built as a major step to establish solid state
photon counters as detectors in Cherenkov astronomy. The camera of the First
G-APD Cherenkov Telesope comprises 1440 Geiger-mode avalanche photo diodes
(G-APD), equipped with solid light guides to increase the effective light
collection area of each sensor. Since no sense-line is available, a special
challenge is to keep the applied voltage stable although the current drawn by
the G-APD depends on the flux of night-sky background photons significantly
varying with ambient light conditions. Methods have been developed to keep the
temperature and voltage dependent response of the G-APDs stable during
operation. As a cross-check, dark count spectra with high statistics have been
taken under different environmental conditions. In this presentation, the
project, the developed methods and the experience from two years of operation
of the first G-APD based camera in Cherenkov astronomy under changing
environmental conditions will be presented.Comment: Proceedings of the Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging

Design and Operation of FACT -- The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope
The First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) is designed to detect cosmic
gamma-rays with energies from several hundred GeV up to about 10 TeV using the
Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique. In contrast to former or existing
telescopes, the camera of the FACT telescope is comprised of solid-state
Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiodes (G-APD) instead of photomultiplier tubes for
photo detection. It is the first full-scale device of its kind employing this
new technology. The telescope is operated at the Observatorio del Roque de los
Muchachos (La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain) since fall 2011. This paper
describes in detail the design, construction and operation of the system,
including hardware and software aspects. Technical experiences gained after one
year of operation are discussed and conclusions with regard to future projects
are drawn.Comment: Corresponding authors: T. Bretz and Q. Weitze
Statistical Evaluation of HTS Assays for Enzymatic Hydrolysis of β-Keto Esters.
β-keto esters are used as precursors for the synthesis of β-amino acids, which are building blocks for some classes of pharmaceuticals. Here we describe the comparison of screening procedures for hydrolases to be used for the hydrolysis of β-keto esters, the first step in the preparation of β-amino acids. Two of the tested high throughput screening (HTS) assays depend on coupled enzymatic reactions which detect the alcohol released during ester hydrolysis by luminescence or absorption. The third assay detects the pH shift due to acid formation using an indicator dye. To choose the most efficient approach for screening, we assessed these assays with different statistical methods-namely, the classical Z'-factor, standardized mean difference (SSMD), the Kolmogorov-Smirnov-test, and t-statistics. This revealed that all three assays are suitable for HTS, the pH assay performing best. Based on our data we discuss the explanatory power of different statistical measures. Finally, we successfully employed the pH assay to identify a very fast hydrolase in an enzyme-substrate screening

Cleaning and tailoring the Pt3Sn(111) surface for surface experiments
The cleaning process of the bimetallic Pt3Sn(111) surface has been studied by means of low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM), microspot low-energy electron diffraction (μ-LEED), and X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM). Different cleaning procedures, performed under ultra-high vacuum conditions (UHV), including sputtering with argon ions and repeated cycles of annealing up to 1500 K were investigated. In this work, we show that a clean Pt3Sn(111) surface of high structural quality with a sharp and brilliant (2 × 2) bulk reconstruction in LEED as well as a perfectly smooth surface with terraces of micron size can be achieved by sputtering, annealing at very high temperatures, followed by a subsequent slow (0.09 K/s) and careful cooling procedure. Additionally, we show the possibility of tailoring the Sn concentration in the topmost layers of Pt3Sn(111) as a function of annealing temperature and subsequent cooling rate. Structural changes of the surface are induced by Sn segregation combined with a surface order–disorder transition at 1340 K. Moreover, two new surface reconstructions depending on the cooling rate are reported

From Fe3 O4 /NiO bilayers to NiFe2 O4 -like thin films through Ni interdiffusion
Ferrites with (inverse) spinel structure display a large variety of electronic and magnetic properties, making some of them interesting for potential applications in spintronics. We investigate the thermally induced interdiffusion of Ni2+ ions out of NiO into Fe3O4 ultrathin films, resulting in off-stoichiometric nickel ferrite-like thin layers. We synthesized epitaxial Fe3O4/NiO bilayers on Nb-doped SrTiO3(001) substrates by means of reactive molecular beam epitaxy. Subsequently, we performed an annealing cycle comprising three steps at temperatures of 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C under an oxygen background atmosphere. We studied the changes of the chemical and electronic properties as result of each annealing step with help of hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and found a rather homogeneous distribution of Ni and Fe cations throughout the entire film after the overall annealing cycle. For one sample we observed a cationic distribution close to that of the spinel ferrite NiFe2O4. Further evidence comes from low-energy electron diffraction patterns indicating a spinel-type structure at the surface after annealing. Site- and element-specific hysteresis loops performed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism uncovered the antiferrimagnetic alignment between the octahedral coordinated Ni2+ and Fe3+ ions and the Fe3+ ion in tetrahedral coordination. We find a quite low coercive field of 0.02 T, indicating a rather low defect concentration within the thin ferrite films
