    The Effect of a Change in Virtual Learning Environment on Innovative Digital Teaching Practice:A Case Study of Academic Staff in an Irish University

    This mixed-methods, investigative case study explores the experience of a virtual learning environment (VLE) change and its effect on the use of digital learning tools specifically, and teaching practice more generally, for chemistry lecturers at TU Dublin (Ireland) prior to pandemic of the coronavirus disease COVID-19. Initially, a questionnaire examined the different teaching identities the participating lecturers might have and how they relate to the literature. These identities were examined under the following themes: sense of achievement, motivational factors for innovation, innovation positioning, as well as social and organizational factors influencing the decision making. A visual approach of representing the questionnaire data, termed ‘Lecturer Landscapes’, was developed which uncovered new trends based on the biographical descriptors of the research population. Subsequent interviews led to a more detailed investigation of the themes noted in the questionnaire and the Lecturer Landscapes to more holistically capture the professional identity of each respondent. The lens of experience during a VLE change was used to frame each respondent’s professional identity in context. Overall, a VLE change does not have to effect teaching practice and can be experienced as a positive change in teaching and learning. It was also noted that innovation can only occur when specific, and individual, needs and problems are addressed and when personal development is promoted by intrinsic, rather than extrinsic, motivational factors

    Limits of Detection of Mycotoxins by Laminar Flow Strips: A Review

    Mycotoxins are secondary metabolic products of fungi. They are poisonous, carcinogenic, and mutagenic in nature and pose a serious health threat to both humans and animals, causing severe illnesses and even death. Rapid, simple and low-cost methods of detection of mycotoxins are of immense importance and in great demand in the food and beverage industry, as well as in agriculture and environmental monitoring, and, for this purpose, lateral flow immunochromatographic strips (ICSTs) have been widely used in food safety and environmental monitoring. The literature to date describing the development of ICSTs for the detection of different types of mycotoxins using different nanomaterials, nanoparticle size, and replicates was reviewed in an attempt to identify the most important determinants of the limit of detection (LOD). It is found that the particle size and type of materials contribute significantly to determining the LOD. The nanoparticle sizes used in most studies have been in the range 15–45 nm and gold nanoparticle-based ICSTs have been shown to exhibit the lowest LOD. Perspectives for potential future development to reduce the LODs of ICSTs are also discussed

    A Review of the ACHS Clinical Indicator Program after 20 years

    The Clinical Indicator Program, which was introduced into the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards’ accreditation program two decades ago, has grown from one set addressed by 115 healthcare organisations to 22 sets with data received from over 800 healthcare organisations, resulting in a national database which is unique in its clinical diversity, reflecting every major medical discipline involved in hospital practice. The process for Clinical Indicator selection and review remains with the providers of the care, but the selection criteria are better defined and the evidence base strengthened. Early responses to their introduction were encouraging as improvements in patient management and outcomes were sought and achieved following review of comparative data, and some examples of these are provided. Clinical Indicator revision remains an important and major task and the original Hospital- Wide set of Clinical Indicators is now in its 12th version. The development and use of Clinical Indicators is increasing world-wide, and in Australia there are other organisations, including the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, looking at Clinical Indicators to further understand the performance of healthcare organisations. As clinical care changes, the challenges for the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards are to ensure the Clinical Indicators continue to reflect current practice, to retain clinician support, and also to ensure that the existence of its extensive and long-standing national clinical database is more widely known and utilised.     The biosynthesis of glycoprotein conjugates is a complex process that involves the collective action of numerous enzymes. Recent research on the chemistry and biology of asparagine-linked glycosylation in our group has been focused on two specific areas. These are the development of potent inhibitors of oligosaccharyl transferase and the investigation of the conformational consequences of the glycosylation process. Since asparagine-linked glycosylation is an essential eukaryotic process, an understanding of the details of this complex transformation is of utmost importance both to fundamental biochemistry and to a consideration of the mechanisms of homeostatic control

    SummaryLike many double-stranded DNA viruses, tumor gammaherpesviruses Epstein-Barr virus and Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus withstand high internal pressure. Bacteriophage HK97 uses covalent chainmail for this purpose, but how this is achieved noncovalently in the much larger gammaherpesvirus capsid is unknown. Our cryoelectron microscopy structure of a gammaherpesvirus capsid reveals a hierarchy of four levels of organization: (1) Within a hexon capsomer, each monomer of the major capsid protein (MCP), 1,378 amino acids and six domains, interacts with its neighboring MCPs at four sites. (2) Neighboring capsomers are linked in pairs by MCP dimerization domains and in groups of three by heterotrimeric triplex proteins. (3) Small (∌280 amino acids) HK97-like domains in MCP monomers alternate with triplex heterotrimers to form a belt that encircles each capsomer. (4) One hundred sixty-two belts concatenate to form noncovalent chainmail. The triplex heterotrimer orchestrates all four levels and likely drives maturation to an angular capsid that can withstand pressurization

    Structural and photophysical characterisation of coordination and optical isomers of mononuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl 1,2,4-triazole complexes

    The X-ray crystal structure of the N2 isomers of the Ru(bipy)2 complexes of Hphpztr (1) and Hpztr (2), (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Hphpztr = 2-(5'-phenyl-4'H-[1,2,4]triazol-3'-yl)pyrazine and Hpztr = 2-(4'H-[1,2,4]triazol-3'-yl)pyrazine) are reported. The molecular structure obtained for 2 demonstrates an interesting structural aspect in the sharing of a single proton between two molecular units. The isolation of the Δ and Λ stereoisomers of 1 and [Ru(phen)2(pztr)]+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (3) by semipreparative HPLC is also reported. The compounds obtained are characterised by electronic spectroscopy and particular attention is paid to the photophysical properties of Δ and Λ isomers of 1 and 3, in chiral enantiopure and racemic solvents

    Pleasure and meaningful discourse: an overview of research issues

    The concept of pleasure has emerged as a multi-faceted social and cultural phenomenon in studies of media audiences since the 1980s. In these studies different forms of pleasure have been identified as explaining audience activity and commitment. In the diverse studies pleasure has emerged as a multi-faceted social and cultural concept that needs to be contextualized carefully. Genre and genre variations, class, gender, (sub-)cultural identity and generation all seem to be instrumental in determining the kind and variety of pleasures experienced in the act of viewing. This body of research has undoubtedly contributed to a better understanding of the complexity of audience activities, but it is exactly the diversity of the concept that is puzzling and poses a challenge to its further use. If pleasure is maintained as a key concept in audience analysis that holds much explanatory power, it needs a stronger theoretical foundation. The article maps the ways in which the concept of pleasure has been used by cultural theorists, who have paved the way for its application in reception analysis, and it goes on to explore the ways in which the concept has been used in empirical studies. Central to our discussion is the division between the ‘public knowledge’ and the ‘popular culture’ projects in reception analysis which, we argue, have major implications for the way in which pleasure has come to be understood as divorced from politics, power and ideology. Finally, we suggest ways of bridging the gap between these two projects in an effort to link pleasure to the concepts of hegemony and ideology
