    UNDERSTANDING DIRECT BOROHYDRIDE - HYDROGEN PEROXIDE FUEL CELL PERFORMANCE

    Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) generate electrical power by oxidizing aqueous BH4- at the anode and reducing an oxidizer, like aqueous H2O2 for an all-liquid fuel cell, at the cathode. Interest in DBFCs has grown due to high theoretical energy densities of the reactants, yet DBFC technology faces challenges such as side reactions and other processes that reduce cell efficiency and power generation. Relationships linking performance to cell design and operation will benefit from detailed and calibrated cell design models, and this study presents the development and calibration of a 2D, single-cell DBFC model that includes transport in reactant channels and complex charge transfer reactions at each electrode. Initial modeling was performed assuming ideal reactions without undesirable side reactions. Results were valuable for showing how design parameters impact ideal performance limits and DBFC cell voltage (efficiency). Model results showed that concentration boundary layers in the reactant flow channels limit power density and single-pass reactant utilization. Shallower channels and recirculation improve utilization, but at the expense of lower cell voltage and power per unit membrane area. Reactant coulombic efficiency grows with decreasing inlet reactant concentration, reactant flow rate and cell potential, as the relative reaction rates at each electrode shift to favor charge transfer reactions. To incorporate more realistic reaction mechanisms into the model, experiments in a single cell DBFC were performed to guide reaction mechanism selection by showing which processes were important to capture. Kinetic parameters for both electrochemical and critical heterogeneous reactions at each electrode were subsequently fitted to the measurements. Single-cell experiments showed that undesirable side reactions identified by gas production were reduced with lower reactant concentration and higher supporting electrolyte concentration and these results provided the basis for calibrating multi-step kinetic mechanism. Model results with the resulting calibrated mechanism showed that cell thermodynamic efficiency falls with cell voltage while coulombic utilization rises, yielding a maximum overall efficiency operating point. For this DBFC, maximum overall efficiency coincides with maximum power density, suggesting the existence of preferred operating point for a given geometry and operating conditions

    Substance use in school going teenagers in Kildare and west Wicklow.

    This document reported on research on young people and drug misuse funded by the Eastern Health Board and the Action South Kildare Partnership. The aim was to collect data on the extent and type of drug use, both legal and illegal, in the secondary-school-going population of Kildare and west Wicklow. This was carried out by giving a self-administered questionnaire to a sample of 1,838 pupils from 29 schools in the area. The mean age of respondents was 14.7 years; 53% were male and 47% were female. The researchers found that 86% of those surveyed had used at least one drug. The principal drugs were alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, and solvents, with LSD, amphetamines and magic mushrooms mentioned. Heroin was far less commonly used. Those who reported using cigarettes, cannabis or alcohol were found to have been more likely to have tried other substances, and males had a higher risk of having taken any illegal drugs. Significantly more vocational school than secondary school pupils were found to persist in using ecstasy and amphetamines, and they were also found to have a lower mean age of initiation into heroin use

    The Stellar Populations of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

    Near-infrared (NIR) K' images of a sample of five low surface brightness disc galaxies (LSBGs) were combined with optical data, with the aim of constraining their star formation histories. Both red and blue LSBGs were imaged to enable comparison of their stellar populations. For both types of galaxy strong colour gradients were found, consistent with mean stellar age gradients. Very low stellar metallicities were ruled out on the basis of metallicity-sensitive optical-NIR colours. These five galaxies suggest that red and blue LSBGs have very different star formation histories and represent two independent routes to low B band surface brightness. Blue LSBGs are well described by models with low, roughly constant star formation rates, whereas red LSBGs are better described by a `faded disc' scenario.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX; 2 embedded figures; MNRAS Letters, Accepte

    Regional Brain Morphometry Predicts Memory Rehabilitation Outcome after Traumatic Brain Injury

    Cognitive deficits following traumatic brain injury (TBI) commonly include difficulties with memory, attention, and executive dysfunction. These deficits are amenable to cognitive rehabilitation, but optimally selecting rehabilitation programs for individual patients remains a challenge. Recent methods for quantifying regional brain morphometry allow for automated quantification of tissue volumes in numerous distinct brain structures. We hypothesized that such quantitative structural information could help identify individuals more or less likely to benefit from memory rehabilitation. Fifty individuals with TBI of all severities who reported having memory difficulties first underwent structural MRI scanning. They then participated in a 12 session memory rehabilitation program emphasizing internal memory strategies (I-MEMS). Primary outcome measures (HVLT, RBMT) were collected at the time of the MRI scan, immediately following therapy, and again at 1-month post-therapy. Regional brain volumes were used to predict outcome, adjusting for standard predictors (e.g., injury severity, age, education, pretest scores). We identified several brain regions that provided significant predictions of rehabilitation outcome, including the volume of the hippocampus, the lateral prefrontal cortex, the thalamus, and several subregions of the cingulate cortex. The prediction range of regional brain volumes were in some cases nearly equal in magnitude to prediction ranges provided by pretest scores on the outcome variable. We conclude that specific cerebral networks including these regions may contribute to learning during I-MEMS rehabilitation, and suggest that morphometric measures may provide substantial predictive value for rehabilitation outcome in other cognitive interventions as well

    Genetic parameters for carnitine, creatine, creatinine, carnosine, and anserine concentration in longissimus muscle and their association with palatability traits in Angus cattle

    The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for carnitine, creatine, creatinine, carnosine, and anserine concentration in LM and to evaluate their associations with Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) and beef palatability traits. Longissimus muscle samples from 2,285 Angus cattle were obtained and fabricated into steaks for analysis of carnitine, creatine, creatinine, carnosine, anserine, and other nutrients, and for trained sensory panel and WBSF assessments. Restricted maximum likelihood procedures were used to obtain estimates of variance and covariance components under a multiple-trait animal model. Estimates of heritability for carnitine, creatine, creatinine, carnosine, and anserine concentrations in LM from Angus cattle were 0.015, 0.434, 0.070, 0.383, and 0.531, respectively. Creatine, carnosine, and anserine were found to be moderately heritable, whereas almost no genetic variation was observed in carnitine and creatinine. Moderate positive genetic (0.25, P \u3c 0.05) and phenotypic correlations (0.25, P \u3c 0.05) were identified between carnosine and anserine. Medium negative genetic correlations were identified between creatine and both carnosine (-0.53, P\u3c 0.05) and anserine (-0.46, P \u3c 0.05). Beef and livery/metallic flavor were not associated with any of the 5 compounds analyzed (P \u3e 0.10), and carnitine concentrations were not associated (P \u3e 0.10) with any of the meat palatability traits analyzed. Carnosine was negatively associated with overall tenderness as assessed by trained sensory panelists. Similar negative associations with overall tenderness were identified for creatinine and anserine. Painty/fishy was the only flavor significantly and negatively associated with creatinine and carnosine. These results provide information regarding the concentration of these compounds, the amount of genetic variation, and evidence for negligible associations with beef palatability traits in LM of beef cattle

    Chemistry of the 8‐Nitroguanine DNA Lesion: Reactivity, Labelling and Repair

    The 8-nitroguanine lesion in DNA is increasingly associated with inflammation-related carcinogenesis, whereas the same modification on guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate generates a second messenger in NO-mediated signal transduction. Very little is known about the chemistry of 8-nitroguanine nucleotides, despite the fact that their biological effects are closely linked to their chemical properties. To this end, a selection of chemical reactions have been performed on 8-nitroguanine nucleosides and oligodeoxynucleotides. Reactions with alkylating reagents reveal how the 8-nitro substituent affects the reactivity of the purine ring, by significantly decreasing the reactivity of the N2 position, whilst the relative reactivity at N1 appears to be enhanced. Interestingly, the displacement of the nitro group with thiols results in an efficient and specific method of labelling this lesion and is demonstrated in oligodeoxynucleotides. Additionally, the repair of this lesion is also shown to be a chemically feasible reaction through a reductive denitration with a hydride source

    Understanding the performance and reliability of NLP tools: a comparison of four NLP tools predicting stroke phenotypes in radiology reports

    BACKGROUND: Natural language processing (NLP) has the potential to automate the reading of radiology reports, but there is a need to demonstrate that NLP methods are adaptable and reliable for use in real-world clinical applications. METHODS: We tested the F1 score, precision, and recall to compare NLP tools on a cohort from a study on delirium using images and radiology reports from NHS Fife and a population-based cohort (Generation Scotland) that spans multiple National Health Service health boards. We compared four off-the-shelf rule-based and neural NLP tools (namely, EdIE-R, ALARM+, ESPRESSO, and Sem-EHR) and reported on their performance for three cerebrovascular phenotypes, namely, ischaemic stroke, small vessel disease (SVD), and atrophy. Clinical experts from the EdIE-R team defined phenotypes using labelling techniques developed in the development of EdIE-R, in conjunction with an expert researcher who read underlying images. RESULTS: EdIE-R obtained the highest F1 score in both cohorts for ischaemic stroke, ≥93%, followed by ALARM+, ≥87%. The F1 score of ESPRESSO was ≥74%, whilst that of Sem-EHR is ≥66%, although ESPRESSO had the highest precision in both cohorts, 90% and 98%. For F1 scores for SVD, EdIE-R scored ≥98% and ALARM+ ≥90%. ESPRESSO scored lowest with ≥77% and Sem-EHR ≥81%. In NHS Fife, F1 scores for atrophy by EdIE-R and ALARM+ were 99%, dropping in Generation Scotland to 96% for EdIE-R and 91% for ALARM+. Sem-EHR performed lowest for atrophy at 89% in NHS Fife and 73% in Generation Scotland. When comparing NLP tool output with brain image reads using F1 scores, ALARM+ scored 80%, outperforming EdIE-R at 66% in ischaemic stroke. For SVD, EdIE-R performed best, scoring 84%, with Sem-EHR 82%. For atrophy, EdIE-R and both ALARM+ versions were comparable at 80%. CONCLUSIONS: The four NLP tools show varying F1 (and precision/recall) scores across all three phenotypes, although more apparent for ischaemic stroke. If NLP tools are to be used in clinical settings, this cannot be performed "out of the box." It is essential to understand the context of their development to assess whether they are suitable for the task at hand or whether further training, re-training, or modification is required to adapt tools to the target task
