The Energy of a Plasma in the Classical Limit
When \lambda_{T} << d_{T}, where \lambda_{T} is the de Broglie wavelength and
d_{T}, the distance of closest approach of thermal electrons, a classical
analysis of the energy of a plasma can be made. In all the classical analysis
made until now, it was assumed that the frequency of the fluctuations \omega <<
T (k_{B}=\hbar=1). Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we evaluate the
energy of a plasma, allowing the frequency of the fluctuations to be arbitrary.
We find that the energy density is appreciably larger than previously thought
for many interesting plasmas, such as the plasma of the Universe before the

Strangers in the night: Discovery of a dwarf spheroidal galaxy on its first Local Group infall
We present spectroscopic observations of the AndXII dwarf spheroidal galaxy
using DEIMOS/Keck-II, showing it to be moving rapidly through the Local Group
(-556 km/s heliocentric velocity, -281 km/s relative to Andromeda from the MW),
falling into the Local Group from ~115 kpc beyond Andromeda's nucleus. AndXII
therefore represents a dwarf galaxy plausibly falling into the Local Group for
the first time, and never having experienced a dense galactic environment. From
Green Bank Telescope observations, a limit on the H{I} gas mass of <3000 Msun
suggests that AndXII's gas could have been removed prior to experiencing the
tides of the Local Group galaxies. Orbit models suggest the dwarf is close to
the escape velocity of M31 for published mass models. AndXII is our best direct
evidence for the late infall of satellite galaxies, a prediction of

Chicanx histories of the present: a praxis against gang injunctions in Orange County, California, 2008–2016
Chicanxs Unidxs de Orange County (CU) is a community organisation in Southern California. Founded in 2006, CU is small, multigenerational and multi-ethnic. Its organising has focused predominantly on building community power by focusing on local politics, abusive policing and the gentrification of Chicanx neighbourhoods. This article presents an evidence-based narrative of several CU campaigns (primarily between 2008 and 2016). CU’s tactical aggressiveness and strategic pragmatism forced significant changes to ‘civil gang injunctions’ in California. For decades, California law enforcement has used such injunctions to suppress a generation of young people of colour as ‘gang members’. Minors and adults have been prohibited indefinitely from engaging in otherwise legal activities without due process. CU’s emphasis on the longevity of institutionalised and societal racism, rooted in the colonial conquest, resembles arguments associated with critical race theory (CRT) – though CU was not inspired by CRT. CU’s praxis resembles practices of critical pedagogy – though it was not directly modelled on it either. Rather, we argue that CU’s praxis is embedded in the members’ lived experience and study of the local history of racism, community and social movements. All five of this article’s authors were members of CU and were involved in the organising described in this article. Where are the Baryons?
New, high resolution, large-scale, cosmological hydrodynamic galaxy formation
simulations of a standard cold dark matter model (with a cosmological constant)
are utilized to predict the distribution of baryons at the present and at
moderate redshift. It is found that the average temperature of baryons is an
increasing function of time, with most of the baryons at the present time
having a temperature in the range 10^{5-7} K. Thus, not only is the universe
dominated by dark matter, but more than one half of the normal matter is yet to
be detected. Detection of this warm/hot gas poses an observational challenge,
requiring sensitive EUV and X-ray satellites. Signatures include a soft, cosmic
X-ray background, apparent warm components in hot clusters due to both
intrinsic warm intra-cluster gas and warm inter-cluster gas projected onto
clusters along the line of sight, absorption lines in X-ray and UV quasar
spectra [e.g., O VI (1032,1038)A lines, OVII 574 eV line], strong emission
lines (e.g., O VIII 653 eV line) and low redshift, broad, low column density
\lya absorption lines. We estimate that approximately 1/4 of the
extragalactic soft X-ray background (SXRB) (at 0.7 keV) arises from the
warm/hot gas, half of it coming from and three-quarters from ,

Three Dimensional Computer Graphics Federates for the 2012 Smackdown Simulation
The Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) Smackdown is a two-year old annual event held at the 2012 Spring Simulation Interoperability Workshop (SIW). A primary objective of the Smackdown event is to provide college students with hands-on experience in developing distributed simulations using High Level Architecture (HLA). Participating for the second time, the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) deployed four federates, two federates simulated a communications server and a lunar communications satellite with a radio. The other two federates generated 3D computer graphics displays for the communication satellite constellation and for the surface based lunar resupply mission. Using the Light-Weight Java Graphics Library, the satellite display federate presented a lunar-texture mapped sphere of the moon and four Telemetry Data Relay Satellites (TDRS), which received object attributes from the lunar communications satellite federate to drive their motion. The surface mission display federate was an enhanced version of the federate developed by ForwardSim, Inc. for the 2011 Smackdown simulation. Enhancements included a dead-reckoning algorithm and a visual indication of which communication satellite was in line of sight of Hadley Rille. This paper concentrates on these two federates by describing the functions, algorithms, HLA object attributes received from other federates, development experiences and recommendations for future, participating Smackdown teams

Effects of early intervention and the moderating effects of brain activity on institutionalized children's social skills at age 8
The present study examined the social skills of previously institutionalized, 8-y-old Romanian children from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project and the influence of attachment security and brain electrical activity (alpha power) on these skills. Participants included children randomized to an intervention involving foster care [Foster Care Group (FCG)], children randomized to remain in institutions [Care As Usual Group (CAUG)], and never-institutionalized children living with their families in the Bucharest community [Never-Institutionalized Group (NIG)]. A continuous rating of children's attachment security to their primary caregiver was assessed at 42 mo of age. When children were 8 y old, teachers rated their social skills, and the children's resting electroencephalogram alpha power was recorded. Teachers rated social skills of FCG children who were placed into foster care before 20 mo of age as no different from NIG children, and both of these groups were higher than CAUG children and FCG children placed after 20 mo. Electroencephalogram alpha power at age 8 significantly moderated the relations between attachment security and social skills. These findings characterize institutionalized children's social skills in middle childhood within the context of a randomized intervention while highlighting the roles of both relational and biological factors in these developmental trajectories

Hubble Space Telescope Observations of M32: The Color-Magnitude Diagram
We present a V-I color-magnitude diagram for a region 1'-2' from the center
of M32 based on Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images. The broad color-luminosity
distribution of red giants shows that the stellar population comprises stars
with a wide range in metallicity. This distribution cannot be explained by a
spread in age. The blue side of the giant branch rises to M_I ~ -4.0 and can be
fitted with isochrones having [Fe/H] ~ -1.5. The red side consists of a heavily
populated and dominant sequence that tops out at M_I ~ -3.2, and extends beyond
V-I=4. This sequence can be fitted with isochrones with -0.2 < [Fe/H] < +0.1,
for ages running from 15 Gyr to 5 Gyr respectively. We do not find the
optically bright asymptotic giant branch stars seen in previous ground-based
work and argue that the majority of them were artifacts of crowding. Our
results are consistent with the presence of the infrared-luminous giants found
in ground-based studies, though their existence cannot be directly confirmed by
our data. There is little evidence for an extended or even a red horizontal
branch, but we find a strong clump on the giant branch itself. If the age
spread is not extreme, the distribution of metallicities in M32 is considerably
narrower than that of the closed-box model of chemical evolution, and also
appears somewhat narrower than that of the solar neighborhood. Overall, the M32
HST color-magnitude diagram is consistent with the average luminosity-weighted
age of 8.5 Gyr and [Fe/H] = -0.25 inferred from integrated spectral indices.Comment: 22 pages, AASTeX, aaspp4 and flushrt style files included, 11
