Hybridization of sub-gap states in one-dimensional superconductor/semiconductor Coulomb islands
We present measurements of one-dimensional superconductor-semiconductor
Coulomb islands, fabricated by gate confinement of a two-dimensional InAs
heterostructure with an epitaxial Al layer. When tuned via electrostatic side
gates to regimes without sub-gap states, Coulomb blockade reveals Cooper-pair
mediated transport. When sub-gap states are present, Coulomb peak positions and
heights oscillate in a correlated way with magnetic field and gate voltage, as
predicted theoretically, with (anti) crossings in (parallel) transverse
magnetic field indicating Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. Overall results are
consistent with a picture of overlapping Majorana zero modes in finite wires
Reversible skew laurent polynomial rings and deformations of poisson automorphisms
A skew Laurent polynomial ring S = R[x(+/- 1); alpha] is reversible if it has a reversing automorphism, that is, an automorphism theta of period 2 that transposes x and x(-1) and restricts to an automorphism gamma of R with gamma = gamma(-1). We study invariants for reversing automorphisms and apply our methods to determine the rings of invariants of reversing automorphisms of the two most familiar examples of simple skew Laurent polynomial rings, namely a localization of the enveloping algebra of the two-dimensional non-abelian solvable Lie algebra and the coordinate ring of the quantum torus, both of which are deformations of Poisson algebras over the base field F. Their reversing automorphisms are deformations of Poisson automorphisms of those Poisson algebras. In each case, the ring of invariants of the Poisson automorphism is the coordinate ring B of a surface in F-3 and the ring of invariants S-theta of the reversing automorphism is a deformation of B and is a factor of a deformation of F[x(1), x(2), x(3)] for a Poisson bracket determined by the appropriate surface
The adult perceptual limen of syllable segregation in typically developing paediatric speech
Inappropriate gaps between syllables are one of the core diagnostic features of both childhood apraxia of speech and acquired apraxia of speech. However, little is known about how listeners perceive and identify inappropriate pauses between syllables (gap detection). Only one previous study has investigated the perception of inappropriate pauses between syllables in typical adult speakers and no investigations of gap detection in children's speech have been undertaken. The purpose of this research was to explore the boundaries of listener gap detection to determine at which gap length (duration) a listener can perceive that an inappropriate pause is present in child speech. Listener perception of between-syllable gaps was explored in an experimental design study using the online survey platform Qualtrics. Speech samples were collected from two typically developing children and digitally manipulated to insert gaps between syllables. Adult listeners (n = 84) were recruited and could accurately detect segregation on 80% of presentations at a duration between 100 and 125 ms and could accurately detect segregation on 90% of presentations at a duration between 125 and 150 ms. Listener musical training, gender and age were not correlated with accuracy of detection, but speech pathology training was, albeit weakly. Male speaker gender, and strong onset syllable stress were correlated with increased accuracy compared to female speaker gender and weak onset syllable stress in some gap conditions. The results contribute to our understanding of speech acceptability in CAS and other prosodic disorders and moves towards developing standardised criteria for rating syllable segregation. There may also be implications for computer and artificial intelligence understanding of child speech and automatic detection of disordered speech based on between syllable segregation
Impact of the introduction of a specialist critical care pharmacist on the level of pharmaceutical care provided to the critical care unit
Objectives To evaluate the impact of a dedicated specialist critical care pharmacist service on patient care at a UK critical care unit (CCU). Methods Pharmacist intervention data was collected in two phases. Phase 1 was with the provision of a non-specialist pharmacist chart review service and Phase 2 was after the introduction of a specialist dedicated pharmacy service. Two CCUs with established critical care pharmacist services were used as controls. The impact of pharmacist interventions on optimising drug therapy or preventing harm from medication errors was rated on a 4-point scale. Key findings There was an increase in the mean daily rate of pharmacist interventions after the introduction of the specialist critical care pharmacist (5.45 versus 2.69 per day, P < 0.0005). The critical care pharmacist intervened on more medication errors preventing potential harm and optimised more medications. There was no significant change to intervention rates at the control sites. Across all study sites the majority of pharmacist interventions were graded to have at least moderate impact on patient care. Conclusion The introduction of a specialist critical care pharmacist resulted in an increased rate of pharmacist interventions compared to a non-specialist pharmacist service thus improving the quality of patient care
Coherent transport through a Majorana island in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer
Majorana zero modes are leading candidates for topological quantum
computation due to non-local qubit encoding and non-abelian exchange
statistics. Spatially separated Majorana modes are expected to allow
phase-coherent single-electron transport through a topological superconducting
island via a mechanism referred to as teleportation. Here we experimentally
investigate such a system by patterning an elongated epitaxial InAs-Al island
embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. With increasing parallel magnetic
field, a discrete sub-gap state in the island is lowered to zero energy
yielding persistent 1e-periodic Coulomb blockade conductance peaks (e is the
elementary charge). In this condition, conductance through the interferometer
is observed to oscillate in a perpendicular magnetic field with a flux period
of h/e (h is Planck's constant), indicating coherent transport of single
electrons through the islands, a signature of electron teleportation via
Majorana modes, could also be observed, suggesting additional non-Majorana
mechanisms for 1e transport through these moderately short wires
Emotions and ethics: A Foucauldian framework for becoming an ethical educator
This paper provides examples of how a teacher and a principal construct their ‘ethical selves’. In doing so we demonstrate how Foucault's four-part ethical framework can be a scaffold with which to actively connect emotions to a personal ethical position. We argue that ethical work is and should be an ongoing and dynamic life long process rather than a more rigid adherence to a ‘code of ethics’ that may not meaningfully engage its adherents. We use Foucault's four-part framework of ethical practice as a framework through which an ‘ethical self’ can be purposely constructed. This is important work, as those who have authority over others must know how to monitor themselves against the misuse of the power of their positions
Canine pseudopregnancy: an evaluation of prevalence and current treatment protocols in the UK
Background: There is a dearth of literature on pseudopregnancy in the bitch, with only a few treatment-based
studies published since the 1990s. Pseudopregnancy may be under-recognised in bitches and may account for a
proportion of behavioural cases seen in veterinary practices including aggression. Little is known about commonly
used treatments for overtly pseudopregnant bitches and it is possible that current regimes may not be prescribed
for a sufficient duration to control any clinical signs including, physical and behavioural changes. To investigate
current trends in diagnosis and treatment of canine pseudopregnancy, a postal survey was sent to 2000 randomly
selected veterinary surgeons in UK veterinary practices. The questionnaire queried how often vets recognise cases
of pseudopregnancy in spayed and entire bitches, which physical or behavioural signs are commonly recognised
for diagnosis, and which management or treatment protocols are used.
Results: The response rate was 19.8% (397/2000). Ninety-six percent of veterinary surgeons reported seeing
pseudopregnant bitches showing behavioural changes without any physical changes within the last 12 months.
Of those behavioural changes, collecting and mothering objects was the most frequently reported behavioural
sign (96%). Ninety-seven percent of vets had seen aggression in pseudopregnant bitches. Nevertheless, only 52%
of vets routinely asked owners about behavioural changes during consultations. Forty-nine percent of respondents
reported seeing pseudopregnancy in spayed bitches. The most commonly reported physical sign was enlarged
mammary glands and/or milk production (89%). Treatment options varied (surgical, medical or none) and depended on
duration and severity of physical and behavioural signs, owners’ preference, cost, concurrent disease, drug availability
and previous history.
Conclusions: This is the largest epidemiological study of canine pseudopregnancy in the UK. The prevalence and
severity of clinical signs in dogs with pseudopregnancy are variable and possibly under-estimated. Dogs with overt
pseudopregnancy experience diverse physical and behavioural changes and information on standard treatment
protocols are lacking. Although, progress on our understanding of diagnosis and treatment of pseudopregnancy in
spayed and entire bitches has been made, further studies are warranted
