Self similar Barkhausen noise in magnetic domain wall motion
A model for domain wall motion in ferromagnets is analyzed. Long-range
magnetic dipolar interactions are shown to give rise to self-similar dynamics
when the external magnetic field is increased adiabatically. The power spectrum
of the resultant Barkhausen noise is of the form , where
can be estimated from the critical exponents for interface
depinning in random media.Comment: 7 pages, RevTex. To appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Lattice realizations of unitary minimal modular invariant partition functions
The conformal spectra of the critical dilute A-D-E lattice models are studied
numerically. The results strongly indicate that, in branches 1 and 2, these
models provide realizations of the complete A-D-E classification of unitary
minimal modular invariant partition functions given by Cappelli, Itzykson and
Zuber. In branches 3 and 4 the results indicate that the modular invariant
partition functions factorize. Similar factorization results are also obtained
for two-colour lattice models.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, with minor corrections and clarification
Calibration and High Fidelity Measurement of a Quantum Photonic Chip
Integrated quantum photonic circuits are becoming increasingly complex.
Accurate calibration of device parameters and detailed characterization of the
prepared quantum states are critically important for future progress. Here we
report on an effective experimental calibration method based on Bayesian
updating and Markov chain Monte Carlo integration. We use this calibration
technique to characterize a two qubit chip and extract the reflectivities of
its directional couplers. An average quantum state tomography fidelity of
93.79+/-1.05% against the four Bell states is achieved. Furthermore, comparing
the measured density matrices against a model using the non-ideal device
parameters derived from the calibration we achieve an average fidelity of
97.57+/-0.96%. This pinpoints non-ideality of chip parameters as a major factor
in the decrease of Bell state fidelity. We also perform quantum state
tomography for Bell states while continuously varying photon distinguishability
and find excellent agreement with theory
Early multi-wavelength emission from Gamma-ray Bursts: from Gamma-ray to X-ray
The study of the early high-energy emission from both long and short
Gamma-ray bursts has been revolutionized by the Swift mission. The rapid
response of Swift shows that the non-thermal X-ray emission transitions
smoothly from the prompt phase into a decaying phase whatever the details of
the light curve. The decay is often categorized by a steep-to-shallow
transition suggesting that the prompt emission and the afterglow are two
distinct emission components. In those GRBs with an initially steeply-decaying
X-ray light curve we are probably seeing off-axis emission due to termination
of intense central engine activity. This phase is usually followed, within the
first hour, by a shallow decay, giving the appearance of a late emission hump.
The late emission hump can last for up to a day, and hence, although faint, is
energetically very significant. The energy emitted during the late emission
hump is very likely due to the forward shock being constantly refreshed by
either late central engine activity or less relativistic material emitted
during the prompt phase. In other GRBs the early X-ray emission decays
gradually following the prompt emission with no evidence for early temporal
breaks, and in these bursts the emission may be dominated by classical
afterglow emission from the external shock as the relativistic jet is slowed by
interaction with the surrounding circum-burst medium. At least half of the GRBs
observed by Swift also show erratic X-ray flaring behaviour, usually within the
first few hours. The properties of the X-ray flares suggest that they are due
to central engine activity. Overall, the observed wide variety of early
high-energy phenomena pose a major challenge to GRB models.Comment: Accepted for publication in the New Journal of Physics focus issue on

An Inversion Disrupting FAM134B Is Associated with Sensory Neuropathy in the Border Collie Dog Breed
Sensory neuropathy in the Border Collie is a severe neurological disorder caused by the degeneration of sensory and, to a lesser extent, motor nerve cells with clinical signs starting between 2 and 7 months of age. Using a genome-wide association study approach with three cases and 170 breed matched controls, a suggestive locus for sensory neuropathy was identified that was followed up using a genome sequencing approach. An inversion disrupting the candidate gene FAM134B was identified. Genotyping of additional cases and controls and RNAseq analysis provided strong evidence that the inversion is causal. Evidence of cryptic splicing resulting in novel exon transcription for FAM134B was identified by RNAseq experiments. This investigation demonstrates the identification of a novel sensory neuropathy associated mutation, by mapping using a minimal set of cases and subsequent genome sequencing. Through mutation screening, it should be possible to reduce the frequency of or completely eliminate this debilitating condition from the Border Collie breed population
Outcomes of a remote, decentralized health center-based HIV/AIDS antiretroviral program in Zambia, 2003 to 2007
A cross-sectional study of patients living with HIV/ AIDS treated during 2003 to 2007 in decentralized, rural health centers in Zambia was performed to measure virological outcomes after 12 months of antiretroviral therapy and identify factors associated with virological failure. Data from 228 patients who started antiretroviral therapy >12 months prior were analyzed. In all, 93% received stavudine + lamivudine + nevirapine regimens, and median antiretroviral therapy duration was 23.5 months (interquartile range 20-28). Of the 205 patients tested for viral load, 177 (86%) had viral load <1000 copies/mL. Probability of developing virological failure (viral load >1000 copies/mL) was 8.9% at 24 months and 19.6% at 32 months. Predictors for virological failure were <100% adherence, body mass index <18.5 kg/m(2), and women <40 years old. Of those with virological failure who underwent 3 to 6 months of intensive adherence counseling, 45% obtained virological success. In a remote, resource-limited setting in decentralized health centers, virological and immunological assessments of patients on antiretroviral therapy >12 months showed that positive health outcomes are achievable
Efficient depletion of host DNA contamination in malaria clinical sequencing.
The cost of whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is decreasing rapidly as next-generation sequencing technology continues to advance, and the prospect of making WGS available for public health applications is becoming a reality. So far, a number of studies have demonstrated the use of WGS as an epidemiological tool for typing and controlling outbreaks of microbial pathogens. Success of these applications is hugely dependent on efficient generation of clean genetic material that is free from host DNA contamination for rapid preparation of sequencing libraries. The presence of large amounts of host DNA severely affects the efficiency of characterizing pathogens using WGS and is therefore a serious impediment to clinical and epidemiological sequencing for health care and public health applications. We have developed a simple enzymatic treatment method that takes advantage of the methylation of human DNA to selectively deplete host contamination from clinical samples prior to sequencing. Using malaria clinical samples with over 80% human host DNA contamination, we show that the enzymatic treatment enriches Plasmodium falciparum DNA up to ∼9-fold and generates high-quality, nonbiased sequence reads covering >98% of 86,158 catalogued typeable single-nucleotide polymorphism loci
Polar and non-polar structures of NH4TiOF3
Ammonium oxofluorotitanate, NH4TiOF3, is probably the best known precursor for the synthesis of anatase mesocrystals. Transformation of NH4TiOF3 into TiO2 through thermal decomposition, accompanied by hydrolysis, preserves some structural features of the precursor. Currently, any discussion of the mechanism of this transformation is difficult, as the exact crystal structure of the starting compound is not available and no intermediate structures are known. This article describes the outcome of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction studies, revealing the existence of two polymorphs of the parent NH4TiOF3 at different temperatures. A second-order phase transition from the polar Pca21 α phase (1), stable at room temperature, to the Pma2 β phase (2) above ∼433 K has been demonstrated. The direction of the pseudo-fourfold axis in NH4TiOF3 coincides with the orientation of the fourfold axis of anatase mesocrystals, consistent with a topotactical transformation
Magnetic Correlation Length and Universal Amplitude of the Lattice E_8 Ising Model
The perturbation approach is used to derive the exact correlation length
of the dilute A_L lattice models in regimes 1 and 2 for L odd. In regime
2 the A_3 model is the E_8 lattice realisation of the two-dimensional Ising
model in a magnetic field h at T=T_c. When combined with the singular part f_s
of the free energy the result for the A_3 model gives the universal amplitude
as in precise agreement with the result
obtained by Delfino and Mussardo via the form-factor bootstrap approach.Comment: 7 pages, Late
