    Gender and Health: The case for gender-sensitive health policy and health care delivery

    There is growing national and international recognition that gender is an important indicator of health differences. The United Kingdom is in danger of falling behind many other countries that are beginning to recognise the crucial importance of gender to the development of effective health policy and practice. This briefing paper sets out some of the reasons why those involved in the gender and health partnership (GAHP) believe that it is time to place gender at the heart of the equalities agenda in health, and why it is important to ensure gender sensitivity in health policy, medical research and services. This briefing paper refers to the United Kingdom; however, Scotland is in the process of producing guidelines specifically on mainstreaming gender in health policy and service delivery

    Sideband generation of transient lasing without population inversion

    We suggest a method to generate coherent short pulses by generating a frequency comb using lasing without inversion in the transient regime. We use a universal method to study the propagation of a pulse in various spectral regions through an active medium that is strongly driven on a low-frequency transition on a time scale shorter than the decoherence time. The results show gain on the sidebands at different modes can be produced even if there is no initial population inversion prepared. Besides the production of ultra-short pulse this frequency comb may have applications towards making short-wavelength or Tera-hertz lasers

Photonic band-gap (PBG) crystals can be fabricated in semiconductor devices through the etching of patterns of holes in the device, resulting in a periodic dielectric structure. One of the more practical uses of photonic crystals in optoelectronic devices is for thin, high-reflectivity mirrors. The use of hexagonal arrays of etched circular holes results in a 2-D photonic band-gap mirror that can be tuned to a specific wavelength by varying the hole radius and the lattice spacing. 2-D mirror characterization is performed by evaluating the light emission from an active waveguide

Once the placenta is expelled during the third stage of labor, once it has served its role in the body and is facing retirement, it can take on whole new forms of usefulness. Humans, artful at manipulating the materials of life, have created new-and often controversial-purposes for this discard tissue after it has served its primary role: expelled placenta is used in eye surgery, in training dogs to sniff dead bodies, in toxicology research, in forensics, in cosmetics, and, most significantly, in an emerging field of stem cell research.     Collecting and Visualizing Real-Time Urban Data through City Dashboards

    Dashboards which collect and display real-time streamed data from a variety of rudimentary sensors positioned in the built environment provide an immediate portal for decision-makers to get some sense of their city and environment. These devices are linked to previous renditions of control and management of real-time services in cities, particularly transport, in control-room like settings but they are more flexible and do not require massive investment in hardware. At one level they are simply screens linked to some sort of computational device whose displays are focused in web page like formats. Here we catalogue the experience of building such dashboards for large cities in Great Britain. In particular, we link these to the emergence of open data, particularly reflecting the experience of the London Datastore. We then show how such dashboards can be configured in many different ways: as data tables which give some sort of physical presence to such data delivery, to purpose-built dashboards for schools, and to various moveable displays that have artistic as well as informative merit. To an extent as real-time streamed data become less of a novelty, we expect these dashboards to merge into more generic portals but for the moment they represent one very public face of the smart city and its big data
