The ATLAS-SPT Radio Survey of Cluster Galaxies
Using a high-performance computing cluster to mosaic 4,787 pointings, we have
imaged the 100 sq. deg. South Pole Telescope (SPT) deep-field at 2.1 GHz using
the Australian Telescope Compact Array to an rms of 80 Jy and a resolution
of 8". Our goal is to generate an independent sample of radio-selected galaxy
clusters to study how the radio properties compare with cluster properties at
other wavelengths, over a wide range of redshifts in order to construct a
timeline of their evolution out to . A preliminary analysis of the
source catalogue suggests there is no spatial correlation between the clusters

The Spatial Correlation of Bent-Tail Galaxies and Galaxy Clusters
We have completed a deep radio continuum survey covering 86 square degrees of
the Spitzer-South Pole Telescope deep field to test whether bent-tail galaxies
are associated with galaxy clusters. We present a new catalogue of 22 bent-tail
galaxies and a further 24 candidate bent-tail galaxies. Surprisingly, of the 8
bent-tail galaxies with photometric redshifts, only two are associated with
known clusters. While the absence of bent-tail sources in known clusters may be
explained by effects such as sensitivity, the absence of known clusters
associated with most bent-tail galaxies casts doubt upon current models of
bent-tail galaxies.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
Abnormal infant islet morphology precedes insulin resistance in PCOS-like monkeys.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is prevalent in reproductive-aged women and confounded by metabolic morbidities, including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Although the etiology of PCOS is undefined, contribution of prenatal androgen (PA) exposure has been proposed in a rhesus monkey model as premenopausal PA female adults have PCOS-like phenotypes in addition to insulin resistance and decreased glucose tolerance. PA female infants exhibit relative hyperinsulinemia, suggesting prenatal sequelae of androgen excess on glucose metabolism and an antecedent to future metabolic disease. We assessed consequences of PA exposure on pancreatic islet morphology to identify evidence of programming on islet development. Islet counts and size were quantified and correlated with data from intravenous glucose tolerance tests (ivGTT) obtained from dams and their offspring. Average islet size was decreased in PA female infants along with corresponding increases in islet number, while islet fractional area was preserved. Infants also demonstrated an increase in both the proliferation marker Ki67 within islets and the beta to alpha cell ratio suggestive of enhanced beta cell expansion. PA adult females have reduced proportion of small islets without changes in proliferative or apoptotic markers, or in beta to alpha cell ratios. Together, these data suggest in utero androgen excess combined with mild maternal glucose intolerance alter infant and adult islet morphology, implicating deviant islet development. Marked infant, but subtle adult, morphological differences provide evidence of islet post-natal plasticity in adapting to changing physiologic demands: from insulin sensitivity and relative hypersecretion to insulin resistance and diminished insulin response to glucose in the mature PCOS-like phenotype
Balmer Line Variations in the Radio-Loud AGN PG 1512+370
We present spectroscopic observations of the quasar PG~1512+370, covering the
Hbeta line spectral range and collected at moderate resolution (2-7 A FWHM)
from 1988 to 1996. The observations show that the blue wing of the Hbeta broad
profile component has changed significantly in flux and shape between 1988 and
1990 and between 1995 and 1996. A displaced blue peak on the Hbeta profile,
visible in 1988, but not in the 1990-1995 spectra, is revealed again in one of
the spectra obtained in 1996. The blue peak (in both the 1988 and 1996 spectra)
is centered at Delta v_r ~ -3000 +/- 500 km/s from the rest frame defined by
the narrow component of Hbeta, and the OIII lambda4959,5007 lines.
We discuss several conflicting interpretations of the data. We find that the
variability of the Hbeta blue wing is consistent with Balmer line emission from
regions whose motion is predominantly radial, if variations of the blue wing
are a response to continuum changes. Alternatively, we note that observed Hbeta
line profile variations are consistent with a variable line component as in a
``binary black hole'' scenario. More frequent observations of Hbeta are needed

Swift observations of the 2006 outburst of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi: II. 1D hydrodynamical models of wind driven shocks
Following the early Swift X-ray observations of the latest outburst of the
recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi in February 2006 (Paper I), we present new 1D
hydrodynamical models of the system which take into account all three phases of
the remnant evolution. The models suggest a novel way of modelling the system
by treating the outburst as a sudden increase then decrease in wind mass-loss
rate and velocity. The differences between this wind model and previous
Primakoff-type simulations are described. A more complex structure, even in 1D,
is revealed through the presence of both forward and reverse shocks, with a
separating contact discontinuity. The effects of radiative cooling are
investigated and key outburst parameters such as mass-loss rate, ejecta
velocity and mass are varied. The shock velocities as a function of time are
compared to the ones derived in Paper I. We show how the manner in which the
matter is ejected controls the evolution of the shock and that for a
well-cooled remnant, the shock deceleration rate depends on the amount of
energy that is radiated away.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

End of project reportImprovements in milking efficiency have a greater influence than any other aspect of the dairy farmers work on overall farm labour inputs (Whipp, 1992). In order to facilitate the examination of milking process labour inputs, the milking process may be divided into the following three components: herding pre and post milking (transfer of cows to and from the milking parlour); milking (milking tasks / work routines within the parlour); and washing (washing of milking machine and yard). Meanwhile, within milking specifically, the number of cows milked per operator per hour is the best measure of both the performance of the operator and the milking installation (Clough, 1978). This is affected by the following three factors: the milking times of the cows, the number and arrangement of the milking units, and the operator’s work routine (Whipp, 1992). The addition of extra milking units will only increase milking performance if the operator has idle time during milking (Hansen, 1999)
Multi-frequency observations of a superbubble in the LMC: The case of LHA 120-N 70
We present a detailed study of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA)
and XMM-Newton observations of LHA 120-N 70 (hereafter N 70), a spherically
shaped object in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) classified as a superbubble
(SB). Both archival and new observations were used to produce high quality
radio-continuum, X-ray and optical images. The radio spectral index of N 70 is
estimated to be indicating that while a supernova or
supernovae have occurred in the region at some time in the distant past, N70 is
not the remnant of a single specific supernova. N70 exhibits limited
polarisation with a maximum fractional polarisation of 9% in a small area of
the north west limb. We estimate the size of N 70 to have a diameter of 104 pc
( pc). The morphology of N 70 in X-rays closely follows that in radio
and optical, with most X-ray emission confined within the bright shell seen at
longer wavelengths. Purely thermal models adequately fit the soft X-ray
spectrum which lacks harder emission (above 1 keV). We also examine the
pressure output of N 70 where the values for the hot (PX) and warm (PHii) phase
are consistent with other studied Hii regions. However, the dust-processed
radiation pressure (PIR) is significantly smaller than in any other object
studied in Lopez et al. (2013). N70 is a very complex region that is likely to
have had multiple factors contributing to both the origin and evolution of the

Small crater populations on Vesta
The NASA Dawn mission has extensively examined the surface of asteroid Vesta,
the second most massive body in the main belt. The high quality of the gathered
data provides us with an unique opportunity to determine the surface and
internal properties of one of the most important and intriguing main belt
asteroids (MBAs). In this paper, we focus on the size frequency distributions
(SFDs) of sub-kilometer impact craters observed at high spatial resolution on
several selected young terrains on Vesta. These small crater populations offer
an excellent opportunity to determine the nature of their asteroidal precursors
(namely MBAs) at sizes that are not directly observable from ground-based
telescopes (i.e., below ~100 m diameter). Moreover, unlike many other MBA
surfaces observed by spacecraft thus far, the young terrains examined had
crater spatial densities that were far from empirical saturation. Overall, we
find that the cumulative power-law index (slope) of small crater SFDs on Vesta
is fairly consistent with predictions derived from current collisional and
dynamical models down to a projectile size of ~10 m diameter (Bottke et al.,
2005a,b). The shape of the impactor SFD for small projectile sizes does not
appear to have changed over the last several billions of years, and an argument
can be made that the absolute number of small MBAs has remained roughly
constant (within a factor of 2) over the same time period. The apparent steady
state nature of the main belt population potentially provides us with a set of
intriguing constraints that can be used to glean insights into the physical
evolution of individual MBAs as well as the main belt as an ensemble.Comment: Accepted by PSS, to appear on Vesta cratering special issu
Quantum process tomography of a controlled-NOT gate
We demonstrate complete characterization of a two-qubit entangling process -
a linear optics controlled-NOT gate operating with coincident detection - by
quantum process tomography. We use maximum-likelihood estimation to convert the
experimental data into a physical process matrix. The process matrix allows
accurate prediction of the operation of the gate for arbitrary input states,
and calculation of gate performance measures such as the average gate fidelity,
average purity and entangling capability of our gate, which are 0.90, 0.83 and

The Effect of the Higher Order Modes on the Optical Crosstalk in Free-Space Optical Interconnect
In this paper we investigate the effect of the crosstalk introduced due to laser beam imaging in a free-space optical interconnect (FSOI) system. Due to the overfill of the transmitter microlens array by the vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) beam, one part of the signal is imaged by the adjacent microlens to another channel, possibly far from the intended one. Furthermore, it is known that in practice, VCSELs tend to operate in several transverse modes simultaneously. This will cause even more increase in the interchannel and intersymbol interference, to our knowledge this issue has been neglected so far. The numerical simulation has been performed using a combination of exact ray tracing and the beam propagation methods. The results show that the stray-light crosstalk will increase significantly with either greater system density or higher order modes.
