    Statistical Mechanics for Unstable States in Gel'fand Triplets and Investigations of Parabolic Potential Barriers

    Free energies and other thermodynamical quantities are investigated in canonical and grand canonical ensembles of statistical mechanics involving unstable states which are described by the generalized eigenstates with complex energy eigenvalues in the conjugate space of Gel'fand triplet. The theory is applied to the systems containing parabolic potential barriers (PPB's). The entropy and energy productions from PPB systems are studied.     Relating Use of Effective Responsive, Structure, and Non-Directive Control Vegetable Parenting Practices to Subscales from the Model of Goal Directed Behavior

    Parents may positively influence children’s vegetable consumption through effective vegetable parenting practices (VPP). Research has demonstrated three dimensions of effective VPP: Effective Responsiveness, Structure, and Non-Directive Control, but there is limited research investigating each separately. This study presents the modeling of Effective Responsive, Structure, and Non-Directive Control VPP using constructs from the Model of Goal Directed Vegetable Parenting Practices (MGDVPP). Parents (n=307) completed a survey on demographics, MGDVPP constructs, and effective VPP. Block regression modeling tested three models: one for each dimension of effective VPP as the dependent variable. Independent variables included validated subscales representing MGDVPP constructs: Intention, Desire, Perceived Barriers, Autonomy, Relatedness, Self-Efficacy, Habit, Anticipated Emotions, Perceived Behavioral Control, Attitudes, and Norms. Participants were racially diverse, and a majority was female, of higher socioeconomic status, and with a male child. Effective Responsive VPP was positively related to a Habit subscale. Effective Structure VPP was positively related to a Barrier, two Habit, and an Attitude subscales. Effective Non-Directive Control VPP was positively related to being a high school or GED graduate, having younger children, a Habit, and two Intentions subscales, and negatively related to an Intentions and a Perceived Behavioral Control subscales. The adjusted R2 for the Effective Responsive, Structure, and Non-Directive Control VPP models were 0.432, 0.310, and 0.515, respectively. This was the first study to relate constructs from a theoretical model to effective VPP dimensions. Research is needed to longitudinally assess the MGDVPP and test its utility in vegetable-related interventions

    Deformabilidad en hormigones con agregados reciclados

    Diversos trabajos han demostrado la factibilidad de elaborar hormigones con agregados reciclados, sin embargo sobre algunos aspectos poco explorados aún existen informaciones contrapuestas. Entre ellos se destacan el comportamiento diferido del hormigón (contracción y fluencia) y la capacidad de deformación en tracción (extensibilidad). Estas propiedades afectan directamente el grado de fisuración que puede tener una estructura de hormigón, lo que adquiere una significativa relevancia en la práctica, al considerar su vida en servicio. En este trabajo se presenta un estudio de la deformabilidad de hormigones que contienen 50 o 100 % de agregado grueso obtenido a partir de la trituración de losas de pavimento. Los resultados se comparan con los de otros dos hormigones elaborados con idénticas proporciones de materiales componentes variando el tipo de agregado grueso, piedra partida granítica o piedra partida cuarcítica. Se evaluaron la resistencia a tracción, la extensibilidad en flexión bajo cargas rápidas, y la fluencia en compresión. Bajo cargas de corta duración se encontró una deformabilidad creciente en el hormigón con mayor contenido de agregados reciclados, tanto en flexotracción como en compresión; también se midieron mayores valores de contracción libre y de fluencia. A partir de los resultados surge que es posible estimar la deformabilidad del hormigón con agregados reciclados siguiendo criterios similares a los aplicados en hormigones con agregados naturales; las diferencias de deformabilidad se pueden justificar considerando la menor rigidez del agregado reciclado.Different works have demonstrated the feasibility of elaborating concrete with recycled aggregates, nevertheless there is still opposite information about some aspects that have not been widely studied. The differed behaviour (shrinkage and creep) and the deformation capacity in tension (extensibility) of concrete are among them. These properties have a direct effect over the degree of cracking that can have a concrete structure so, considering its service life, they acquire a significant relevance in practice. This paper presents a study on the deformability of concretes that contain 50 or 100 % of coarse aggregate obtained from crushed pavement slabs. The results are compared with those obtained on other two concretes prepared with the same mixture proportions varying only the type of coarse aggregate, granitic crushed stone or quartzitic crushed stone. The tensile strength, extensibility in flexure under rapid rate of loading and creep in compression were evaluated. It was found that under short term loads the deformability of concrete increases with the content of recycled aggregates, both in flexure and in compression, grater values of free shrinkage and creep were also measured. From the obtained results it appears that the deformability of concrete with recycled aggregates can be estimated following the same criteria applied to concrete with natural aggregate, the differences in deformability can be justified considering the lower stiffness of the recycled aggregate

    Molecular Genetic Approaches to Disease of Neural Development

    This study utilized novel genetic techniques in order to find causative gene mutations that underlie diseases of neural development. Our laboratory has collected 175 cases of malformations of cortical development (MCD) from the United States and Europe. Four of these cases are the focus of this manuscript: two familial cases of infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD), a familial case of hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP), and a sporadic case of Greig cephalopolysyndactyly (GCPS) and cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs). The techniques utilized to study the affected patients include microarray-based single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping and copy number variation (CNV) analysis, both of which are powerful tools in the hunt for disease-causing gene mutations. In the familial cases of INAD, we report two novel mutations in the PLA2G6 gene, previously shown to cause INAD when mutated. In the familial case of HSP, we demonstrate linkage to the SPG11 locus on chromosome 15q. Finally, in the sporadic case of GCPS and CCM, we published the first report on this novel syndrome along with a genetic analysis that demonstrates a microdeletion on chromosome 7p, resulting in heterozygous loss of both the GLI3 and CCM2 genes. The three studies presented in this manuscript demonstrate the utility of SNP genotyping and CNV analysis in revealing the genetic mutations that underlie diseases of neural development

    On the new economic philosophy of crisis management in the European Union

    This essay attempts to go beyond presenting the bits and pieces of still ongoing crisis management in the EU. Instead it attempts at finding the ‘red thread’ behind a series of politically improvised decisions. Our fundamental research question asks whether basic economic lessons learned in the 1970s are still valid. Namely, that a crises emanating from either structural or regulatory weaknesses cannot and should not be remedied by demand management. Our second research question is the following: Can lacking internal commitment and conviction in any member state be replaced or substituted by external pressure or formalized procedures and sanctions? Under those angles we analyze the project on establishing a fiscal and banking union in the EU, as approved by the Council in December 2012

    Semiclassical ionization dynamics of the hydrogen molecular ion in an electric field of arbitrary orientation

    Quasi-static models of barrier suppression have played a major role in our understanding of the ionization of atoms and molecules in strong laser fields. Despite their success, in the case of diatomic molecules these studies have so far been restricted to fields aligned with the molecular axis. In this paper we investigate the locations and heights of the potential barriers in the hydrogen molecular ion in an electric field of arbitrary orientation. We find that the barriers undergo bifurcations as the external field strength and direction are varied. This phenomenon represents an unexpected level of intricacy even on this most elementary level of the dynamics. We describe the dynamics of tunnelling ionization through the barriers semiclassically and use our results to shed new light on the success of a recent theory of molecular tunnelling ionization as well as earlier theories that restrict the electric field to be aligned with the molecular axis

    Comparison and complementary use of in situ and remote sensing aerosol measurements in the Athens Metropolitan Area

In this manuscript we aim to combine the measurements of collocated in situ and remote sensing instruments by comparison and complementary use, in order to increase the accuracy of predictions concerning climate change and human health. We also develop a new method in order to select days when a direct comparison on in situ and remote sensing instruments is possible. On selected days that displayed significant turbulence up to approximately 1000 m above ground level (agl), we acquired the aerosol extinction or scattering coefficient by in situ instruments using three approaches. In the first approach the aerosol extinction coefficient was acquired by adding a Nephelometer scattering coefficient in ambient conditions and an Aethalometer absorption coefficient. The correlation between the in situ and remote sensing instruments was good (coefficient of determination R2 equal to 0.69). In the second approach we acquired the aerosol refractive index by fitting dry Nephelometer and Aethalometer measurements with Mie algorithm calculations of the scattering and absorption coefficients for the size distribution up to a maximum diameter of 1000 nm obtained by in situ instruments. The correlation in this case was relatively good (R2 equal to 0.56). Our next step was to compare the extinction coefficient acquired by remote sensing instruments to the scattering coefficient calculated by Mie algorithm using the size distribution up to a maximum diameter of 1000 nm and the equivalent refractive index (ERICOR), which is acquired by the comparison of the size distributions obtained by a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and an Optical Particle Counter (OPC). The agreement between the in situ and remote sensing instruments in this case was not satisfactory (R2 equal to 0.35). The last comparison for the selected days was between the aerosol extinction Ångström exponent acquired by in situ and remote sensing instruments. The correlation was not satisfactory (R2 equal to 0.4), probably due to differences in the number size distributions present in the air volumes measured by in situ and remote sensing instruments. We also present a day that a Saharan dust event occurred in Athens in order to demonstrate the information we obtain through the synergy of in situ and remote sensing instruments on how regional aerosol is added to local aerosol, especially during pollution events due to long range transport.Peer reviewe
