    Integration of ultrasonic transducers in fast prototyping microfluidic devices

    Bulk acoustic wave induced mixing in microfluidic systems has been studied by using a pair of small size ultrasonic transducers integrated into a prototype polydimethylsiloxane device. The acoustic properties of the integrated ultrasonic transducers were evaluated, demonstrating the generation of bulk acoustic wave in the mixing chamber when a low ac voltage is applied. Then, the mixing efficiency of the device was studied by using two stream laminar flows and taking into account the particular geometry of the mixing chamber. Because of the limited power consumption, the system should be compatible with the requirements of a number of applications in both analytical chemistry and biology.Department of Applied PhysicsAuthor name used in this publication: S.     Concurrent use of prescription drugs and herbal medicinal products in older adults: A systematic review

However, little is known about concurrent use with prescription drugs as well as the potential interactions associated with such combinations. Objective Identify and evaluate the literature on concurrent prescription and HMPs use among older adults to assess prevalence, patterns, potential interactions and factors associated with this use. Methods Systematic searches in MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, CINAHL, AMED, Web of Science and Cochrane from inception to May 2017 for studies reporting concurrent use of prescription medicines with HMPs in adults (≄65 years). Quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. The Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) three stage approach to mixed method research was used to synthesise data. Results Twenty-two studies were included. A definition of HMPs or what was considered HMP was frequently missing. Prevalence of concurrent use by older adults varied widely between 5.3% and 88.3%. Prescription medicines most combined with HMPs were antihypertensive drugs, beta blockers, diuretics, antihyperlipidemic agents, anticoagulants, analgesics, antihistamines, antidiabetics, antidepressants and statins. The HMPs most frequently used were: ginkgo, garlic, ginseng, St John’s wort, Echinacea, saw palmetto, evening primrose oil and ginger. Potential risks of bleeding due to use of ginkgo, garlic or ginseng with aspirin or warfarin was the most reported herb-drug interaction. Some data suggests being female, a lower household income and less than high school education were associated with concurrent use. Conclusion Prevalence of concurrent prescription drugs and HMPs use among older adults is substantial and potential interactions have been reported. Knowledge of the extent and manner in which older adults combine prescription drugs will aid healthcare professionals can appropriately identify and manage patients at risk.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Spectroscopic evidence for an all-ferrous [4Fe–4S]0 cluster in the superreduced activator of 2-hydroxyglutaryl-CoA dehydratase from Acidaminococcus fermentans

    The key enzyme of the fermentation of glutamate by Acidaminococcus fermentans, 2-hydroxyglutarylcoenzyme A dehydratase, catalyzes the reversible syn-elimination of water from (R)-2-hydroxyglutaryl-coenzyme A, resulting in (E)-glutaconylcoenzyme A. The dehydratase system consists of two oxygen-sensitive protein components, the activator (HgdC) and the actual dehydratase (HgdAB). Previous biochemical and spectroscopic studies revealed that the reduced [4Fe–4S]+ cluster containing activator transfers one electron to the dehydratase driven by ATP hydrolysis, which activates the enzyme. With a tenfold excess of titanium(III) citrate at pH 8.0 the activator can be further reduced, yielding about 50% of a superreduced [4Fe–4S]0 cluster in the all-ferrous state. This is inferred from the appearance of a new Mössbauer spectrum with parameters Ύ = 0.65 mm/s and ΔEQ = 1.51–2.19 mm/s at 140 K, which are typical of Fe(II)S4 sites. Parallel-mode electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy performed at temperatures between 3 and 20 K showed two sharp signals at g = 16 and 12, indicating an integer-spin system. The X-band EPR spectra and magnetic Mössbauer spectra could be consistently simulated by adopting a total spin St = 4 for the all-ferrous cluster with weak zero-field splitting parameters D = −0.66 cm−1 and E/D = 0.17. The superreduced cluster has apparent spectroscopic similarities with the corresponding [4Fe–4S]0 cluster described for the nitrogenase Fe-protein, but in detail their properties differ. While the all-ferrous Fe-protein is capable of transferring electrons to the MoFe-protein for dinitrogen reduction, a similar physiological role is elusive for the superreduced activator. This finding supports our model that only one-electron transfer steps are involved in dehydratase catalysis. Nevertheless we discuss a common basic mechanism of the two diverse systems, which are so far the only described examples of the all-ferrous [4Fe–4S]0 cluster found in biology

    Sustainable Forest Management Preferences of Interest Groups in Three Regions with Different Levels of Industrial Forestry: An Exploratory Attribute-Based Choice Experiment

    The challenge of sustainable forest management is to integrate diverse and sometimes conflicting management objectives. In order to achieve this goal, we need a better understanding of the aspects influencing the preferences of diverse groups and how these groups make trade-offs between different attributes of SFM. We compare the SFM preferences of interest groups in regions with different forest use histories based on the reasoning that the condition of the forest reflects the forest use history of the area. The condition of the forest also shapes an individual’s forest values and attitudes. These held values and attitudes are thought to influence SFM preferences. We tested whether the SFM preferences vary amongst the different interest groups within and across regions. We collected data from 252 persons using a choice experiment approach, where participants chose multiple times among different options described by a combination of attributes that are assigned different levels. The novelty of our approach was the use of choice experiments in the assessment of regional preference differences. Given the complexity of interregional comparison and the small sample size, this was an exploratory study based on a purposive rather than random sample. Nevertheless, our results suggest that the aggregation of preferences of all individuals within a region does not reveal all information necessary for forest management planning since opposing viewpoints could cancel each other out and lead to an interpretation that does not reflect possibly polarised views. Although based on a small\ud sample size, the preferences of interest groups within a region are generally statistically significantly different from each other; however preferences of interest groups across regions are also significantly different. This illustrates the potential importance of assessing heterogeneity by region and by group
