Growth and yield responses of commercial sugarcane cultivars to mulching in the coastal rainfed region of South Africa
The perceived negative cultivar responses to mulching has limited the adoption of this practice in the South African
sugarcane industry. This study was aimed at evaluating cane yield and quality responses and population dynamics
of popular cultivars to mulching in the rainfed region of South Africa. A four-replicate field trial was established
using a strip-plot design. Cane and tonnes estimated recoverable crystal yields (TERC) yields, and yield components
were determined in three summer ratoons and one winter ratoon. In-season soil water and temperature were
monitored. Mulching significantly improved cane and TERC of all cultivars across ratoons. The highest improvements
in cane and TERC were 85% (N45) and 92% (N39), respectively. The improvements were attributed to the
higher soil water content under the mulch blanket. Stalk height, mass and population (winter ratoon) were improved
at harvest for most cultivars across ratoons with mulching. Mulching reduced emergence and tillering presumably
due to lower soil temperatures under the mulch blanket. The highest mulch-yielding cultivars were N47 and N42, for
which yield increased by 15 and 13 t haā1, respectively. Mulching was beneficial for sugarcane production, regardless

The Capaciousness of No: Affective Refusals as Literacy Practices

Reading Research Quarterly published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. on behalf of International Literacy Association The authors considered the capacious feeling that emerges from saying no to literacy practices, and the affective potential of saying no as a literacy practice. The authors highlight the affective possibilities of saying no to normative understandings of literacy, thinking with a series of vignettes in which children, young people, and teachers refused literacy practices in different ways. The authors use the term capacious to signal possibilities that are as yet unthought: a sense of broadening and opening out through enacting no. The authors examined how attention to affect ruptures humanist logics that inform normative approaches to literacy. Through attention to nonconscious, noncognitive, and transindividual bodily forces and capacities, affect deprivileges the human as the sole agent in an interaction, thus disrupting measurements of who counts as a literate subject and what counts as a literacy event. No is an affective moment. It can signal a pushback, an absence, or a silence. As a theoretical and methodological way of thinking/feeling with literacy, affect proposes problems rather than solutions, countering solution-focused research in which the resistance is to be overcome, co-opted, or solved. Affect operates as a crack or a chink, a tiny ripple, a barely perceivable gesture, that can persist and, in doing so, hold open the possibility for alternative futures
The establishment and rapid spread of Sagittaria Platyphylla in South Africa:
Sagittaria platyphylla Engelm. (Alismataceae) is a freshwater aquatic macrophyte that has become an important invasive weed in freshwater systems in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and recently China. In South Africa, due to its rapid increase in distribution and ineffective control options, it is recognised as one of the countryās worst invasive aquatic alien plants. In this paper, we investigate the spread of the plant since its first detection in 2008, and the management strategies currently carried out against it. Despite early detection and rapid response programmes, which included chemical and mechanical control measures, the plant was able to spread both within and between sites, increasing from just one site in 2008 to 72 by 2019. Once introduced into a lotic system, the plant was able to spread rapidly, in some cases up to 120 km within 6 years, with an average of 10 km per year. The plant was successfully extirpated at some sites, however, due to the failure of chemical and mechanical control, biological control is currently being considered as a potential control option
Subsurface mapping of Rustenburg Layered Suite (RLS), Bushveld Complex, South Africa : inferred structural features using borehole data and spatial analysis
Faults and other structural features within the mafic-ultramafic layers of the Bushveld Complex have been a major issue mainly for exploration and mine planning. This study employed a new approach in detecting faults with both regional and meter scale offsets, which was not possible with the usually applied structure contour mapping. Interpretations of faults from structural and isopach maps were previously based on geological experience, while meter-scale faults were virtually impossible to detect from such maps. Spatial analysis was performed using borehole data primarily. This resulted in the identification of previously known structures and other hitherto unsuspected structural features. Consequently, the location, trends, and geometry of faults and some regional features within the Rustenburg Layered Suite (RLS) that might not be easy to detect through field mapping are adequately described in this study.The University of Pretoria and the Federal University of Technology, Akure through the ETF initiative.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jafrearsci2018-08-30Geolog
Protective behaviours and secondary harms from non-pharmaceutical interventions during the COVID-19 epidemic in South Africa: a multisite prospective longitudinal study
BACKGROUND: In March 2020 South Africa implemented strict non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to contain Covid-19. Over the subsequent five months NPIs were eased in stages according to national strategy. Covid-19 spread throughout the country heterogeneously, reaching rural areas by July and peaking in July-August. Data on the impact of NPI policies on social and economic wellbeing and access to healthcare is limited. We therefore analysed how rural residents of three South African provinces changed their behaviour during the first epidemic wave. METHODS: The South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN) nodes in Mpumalanga (Agincourt), KwaZulu-Natal (AHRI) and Limpopo (DIMAMO) provinces conducted longitudinal telephone surveys among randomly sampled households from rural and peri-urban surveillance populations every 2-3 weeks. Interviews included questions on: Covid-19 knowledge and behaviours; health and economic impact of NPIs; and mental health. RESULTS: 2262 households completed 10,966 interviews between April and August 2020. By August, self-reported satisfaction with Covid-19 knowledge had risen from 48% to 85% and facemask use to over 95%. As selected NPIs were eased mobility increased, and economic losses and anxiety and depression symptoms fell. When Covid-19 cases spiked at one node in July, movement dropped rapidly, and missed daily medication rates doubled. Economic concerns and mental health symptoms were lower in households receiving a greater number of government-funded old-age pensions. CONCLUSIONS: South Africans reported complying with stringent Covid-19 NPIs despite the threat of substantial social, economic and health repercussions. Government-supported social welfare programmes appeared to buffer interruptions in income and healthcare access during local outbreaks. Epidemic control policies must be balanced against impacts on wellbeing in resource-limited settings and designed with parallel support systems where they threaten income and basic service access
From waste cooking oil to oxygen-rich onion-like nanocarbons for the removal of hexavalent chromium from aqueous solutions
Vegetable cooking oil is used in domestic and commercial kitchens owing to its ability to modify and enhance the taste of the food through the frying process. However, as the oil is used through several frying cycles, it changes colour to dark brown and acquires an unpleasant smell. At this point, the waste oil is usually discarded, thereby finding its way into freshwater streams due to poor disposal and thus becoming an environmental pollutant. To provide an alternative, āgreenā route to waste oil disposal, herein we report on the metal-free synthesis of onion-like nanocarbons (OLNCs) made from waste cooking oil via flame pyrolysis. The OLNCs were then applied in the removal of hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solutions. The as-synthesised OLNCs were found to have similar properties (size, quasi-spherical shape etc.) to those synthesised from pure cooking oils. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data showed that the OLNCs contained C-O-type moieties which were attributed to the oxygenation process that took place during the cooking process. The OLNCs from waste oil were applied as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) and showed optimal removal conditions at pH = 2, t = 360 min, Co = 10 mg/L and Q0max = 47.62 mg/g, superior to data obtained from OLNCs prepared from pristine cooking oil. The results showed that the OLNCs derived from the waste cooking oil were effective in the removal of hexavalent chromium. Overall, this study shows how to repurpose an environmental pollutant (waste cooking oil) as an effective adsorbent for pollutant (Cr(VI)) removal.
Significance:
ā¢ Waste cooking oil outperformed olive oil as a starting material for the production of OLNCs for the removal of toxic Cr(VI) from water.
ā¢ The superior performance of the OLNCs from waste cooking oil was attributed to the higher oxygen content found on their surface and acquired through the cooking process.
ā¢ Not only are the OLNCs produced from waste cooking oil effective in the removal of Cr(VI), but they can be used multiple times before replacement, which makes them sustainable
Tick distribution and comparative analysis of bovine blood microbiome in two provinces of South Africa using 16S rRNA PacBio sequencing approach
IntroductionTicks are obligate ectoparasites recognized worldwide as major vectors of several disease-causing pathogens and are good indicators of disease distribution and epidemiology. Recent years have seen a growing concern regarding emerging and re-emerging of economically important tick-borne pathogens of livestock and humans worldwide. The overall objective of the study was to give an insight into current tick distribution and associated bacterial pathogens that may pose a threat to cattle in the sampled study sites.MethodsA total of 150 cattle were randomly selected from three study sites, Harrismith and Phuthaditjhaba in Free State Province and Bergville in KwaZulu Natal Province, South Africa. Blood samples were collected from the cattle and DNA was subjected to the 16S rRNA gene microbiome sequencing on the circular consensus PacBio sequencing platform. Ticks were also collected from various predilection sites of the sampled animals.ResultsA total of eight tick species were identified and Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi (79.4%) was the most abundant followed by R. appendiculatus (11.7%), R. afranicus (2.6%), R. simus (2.6%), Hyalomma rufipes (1.2%), R. decoloratus (1.0%), H. truncatum (0.7%) and R. microplus (0.7%). The bacterial microbiome sequence analysis revealed up to 16 phyla and 30 classes in the three study sites. Proteobacteria was the most dominant bacterial phyla with a relative abundance of 67.2% (Bergville), 73.8% (Harrismith) and 84.8% (Phuthaditjhaba), followed by Firmicutes at 9.6% (Phuthaditjhaba), 18.9% (Bergville) and 19.6% (Harrismith).Conclusion and perspectivesThe Chao 1 index estimator revealed significant differences in the Ī±-diversity of microbial communities among three study sites. This study expands the knowledge on tick fauna and microbial communities in the three study sites
