T his study was conducted on the D.laniger samples maintained in the laboratory condition after collecting from the natural environment. Investigations were performed in the experimental groups in the active period at the time of hibernation and at the period of intermediate awakening during hibernation. The brown adipose tissue BAT of these animals investigated was removed by dissection. The tissue samples dissected were prepared for the analysis at Transmission Electron Microscopy TEM and photographed. It was observed for the D. laniger BAT cells in the active period that there are high amount mitochondria and whereas the scarce amount of the lipid droplets. However, it was drawn attention to BAT cell of animals in hibernation that there plenty of capillary vessels and lipid droplets between them. The contact between lipid droplets with each other in the cytoplasm of animal at intermediate awakening in the winter during hibernation and cytoplasmic material loss and melting of mitochondria cristae partly were observed. These results of this study suggest that it may be useful to understand the importance of the brown adipose tissue of some hibernating mammal

Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by several Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Byssachlamys species growing on food products. In this study, we investigated the effects of patulin on the thymus of growing male rats aged fi ve to six weeks. The rats were receiving it orally at a dose of 0.1 mg kg-1 bw a day for either 60 or 90 days. At the end of the experiment, the thymus was examined for histopathology by light microscopy and for epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptor (EGFR) by immunolocalisation. For morphometry we used the Bs200prop program to analyse images obtained with the Olympus BX51 light microscope. Cell ultrastructure was studied by electron microscopy. In rats treated with patulin, the thymus showed haemorrhage, plasma cell hyperplasia, a dilation and fi brosis in the cortex, enlarged interstitial tissue between the thymic lobules, enlarged fat tissue, thinning of the cortex, and blurring of the cortico-medullary demarcation. Electron microscopy showed signs of cell destruction, abnormalities of the nucleus and organelles, and loss of mitochondrial cristae. However, no differences were observed in thymus EGF and EGFR immunoreactivity between treated and control rats.

This chapter attempts to provide a measurement tool to determine the digitalization maturity level for universities. The objectives of this chapter can be listed as follows: (1) to discuss the relevant literature to reveal all criteria affecting the development of digitalization maturity in higher education, (2) to figure out the importance of these criteria by the help of a traditional multi criteria decision making method, and (3) to apply the proposed methodology on a university to validate how it is successfully implemented for determination of digitalization maturity level. After reviewing the literature, for the methodological structure, four main criteria (strategic, organizational, technological, and data management) are selected with their twenty sub criteria. The methodology of the paper is applied by conducting surveys with valuable experts on this area, and the evaluation of one of Turkey’s best universities is succeeded. It is expected that the outputs of the study will be beneficial guide for both of governmental and consultancy companies that aim to figure out digitalization maturity of higher educational system and aim to give guidance them on how to improve the weaknesses in current practices to level up

    Background: We investigated the effects of vitamin D on the ocular surface, tear functions, corneal imaging, and tear film cytokine levels. Methods: Fifty-two patients with vitamin D levels were examined in 3 groups according to serum vitamin D levels; 28 in group 1 (20 ng/ml). Ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear break up time (BUT), lissamine green (LG) staining, Schirmer test, in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM), and tear collection for cytokine analysis were performed. Results: The mean OSDI score was 35.2 ± 23.3, 36.2 ± 17.7, 24.4 ± 18.2 (p = .253), TBUT was 6.7 ± 2.5 sec, 9.3 ± 1.8 sec, 11.1 ± 2.8 sec (p < .001), Schirmer test was 16.7 ± 8.5 mm, 18.7 ± 7.6 mm, and 20.2 ± 7 mm (p = .254), median LG staining grade was 1 (0–3), 1 (0–2), 0 (0–1) (p = .008) in group 1, group 2, and group 3, respectively. Basal epithelial cell density was 4 027 ± 512 cells/mm2, 4 673 ± 451 cells/mm2, 5 067 ± 817 cells/mm2 (p = < 0.001), sub-basal nerve density was 978 ± 204 μm/frame, 1 236 ± 172 μm/frame, 1 425 ± 290 μm/frame (p = <0.001), median number of long nerve fibers was 3 (2–4) nerve/frame, 4 (3–4) nerve/frame, 4 (3–6) nerve/frame (p = .001), and median grade of nerve fiber tortuosity was 2 (0–3), 2.5 (2–3), 3 (2–4) (p < .001) in group 1, group 2, and group 3, respectively. Mean IL-1 β (82.62 ± 15.26, 85.57 ± 17.41, and 66.44 ± 11 ng/ml in group 1, 2 and 3, respectively, p = .002), IL-17 (77.80 ± 24.91, 64.46 ± 25.47, 55.42 ± 12.05 ng/ml in group 1, 2 and 3, respectively, p = .012), and IL-2 (75.7 ± 18.4, 66.13 ± 26.78, and 59.65 ± 16.04 ng/ml in group 1, 2 and 3, respectively, p = .048) levels were significantly lower in group 3, whereas, IL-13 levels were significantly higher in group 3 (16.12 ± 5.24, 19.20 ± 4.90, and 21.6 ± 5.55 ng/ml in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively, p = .010). Conclusions: Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is associated with ocular surface changes shown with significant TBUT, LG staining, and tear film cytokine contents. Besides, significant corneal basal epithelial, sub-basal nerve density, and structural sub-basal nerve changes were associated with lower Vitamin D levels

Novel MASP1 mutations are associated with an expanded phenotype in 3MC1 syndrome

3MC1 syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intellectual disability, short stature and distinct craniofacial, umbilical, and sacral anomalies. Five mutations in MASP1, encoding lectin complement pathway enzymes MASP-1 and MASP-3, have thus far been reported to cause 3MC1 syndrome. Only one previously reported mutation affects both MASP-1 and MASP-3, while the other mutations affect only MASP-3. We evaluated six unrelated individuals with 3MC1 syndrome and performed Sanger sequencing for all coding exons of MASP1. We also measured complement lectin and alternative pathway activities in an affected individual's serum. We found two novel splice site mutations, c.1012-2A > G in one and c.891 + 1G > T in two probands, and three novel missense mutations, c.1451G > A (p.G484E), c.1657G > A (p.D553N), and c.1987G > T (p.D663Y). Missense mutations affect only MASP-3, while splice site mutations affect both MASP-1 and MASP-3. In a proband who is homozygous for c.891 + 1G > T, we detected a total lack of lectin complement pathway activity and a 2.5-fold lower alternative pathway activity. The phenotype observed in patients whose both MASP-1 and MASP-3 are affected and in those whose only MASP-3 is affected does not appear to be different. We observed structural brain abnormalities, neonatal tooth, a vascular anomaly and a solid lesion in liver as novel phenotypic features of 3MC1 syndrome. Novel mutations and additional phenotypic features expand the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum of 3MC1 syndrome. Although patients with MASP-1 dysfunction in addition to disrupted MASP-3 have an altered complement system, their disease phenotype is not different from those having only MASP-3 dysfunction
