The Collective Article 'New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records' of the Mediterranean Marine Science journal offers the means to publish biodiversity records in the Mediterranean Sea. The current article is divided in two parts, for records of alien and native species respectively. The new records of alien species include: the red alga Asparagopsis taxiformis (Crete and Lakonikos Gulf, Greece); the red alga Grateloupia turuturu (along the Israeli Mediterranean shore); the mantis shrimp Clorida albolitura (Gulf of Antalya, Turkey); the mud crab Dyspanopeus sayi (Mar Piccolo of Taranto, Ionian Sea); the blue crab Callinectes sapidus (Chios Island, Greece); the isopod Paracerceis sculpta (northern Aegean Sea, Greece); the sea urchin Diadema setosum (Gökova Bay, Turkey); the molluscs Smaragdia souverbiana, Murex forskoehlii, Fusinus verrucosus, Circenita callipyga, and Aplysia dactylomela (Syria); the cephalaspidean mollusc Haminoea cyanomarginata (Baia di Puolo, Massa Lubrense, Campania, southern Italy); the topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva (Civitavecchia, Tyrrhenian Sea); the fangtooth moray Enchelycore anatina (Plemmirio marine reserve, Sicily); the silver-cheeked toadfish Lagocephalus sceleratus (Saros Bay, Turkey; and Ibiza channel, Spain); the Indo-Pacific ascidian Herdmania momus in Kastelorizo Island (Greece); and the foraminiferal Clavulina multicamerata (Saronikos Gulf, Greece). The record of L. sceleratus in Spain consists the deepest (350-400m depth) record of the species in the Mediterranean Sea. The new records of native species include: first record of the ctenophore Cestum veneris in Turkish marine waters; the presence of Holothuria tubulosa and Holothuria polii in the Bay of Igoumenitsa (Greece); the first recorded sighting of the bull ray Pteromylaeus bovinus in Maltese waters; and a new record of the fish Lobotes surinamensis from Maliakos Gulf.peer-reviewe

History of spinal disorders and Cerrahiyetül Haniye (imperial surgery): A review of a Turkish treatise written by Şerefeddin Sabuncuoǧlu in the 15th century. Historical vignette

The history of the spinal surgery represent an important aspect of spine-related sciences. The development of the treatment strategies of spine-related disorders has predominantly been recorded in the Western literature. In this paper, a Turkish physician, Şerefeddin Sabuncuoǧlu (1385-1468), and this treatise, Cerrahiyetül Haniye (Imperial Surgery), are presented. Three sections of this book regarding spinal disorders (spinal dislocations, sciatica, and back pain) are reviewed. The techniques describe were used by Sabuncuoǧlu in the 1400s. In conclusion, the languages and illustrations of this treatise are unique. Compared with current approaches, there are no major differences in the principles of treating spinal traumas despite the passage of almost 500 years

Determining the depression perception and decision-making levels of students

The objective of this present study is to find whether the depression perception of the students of the faculty of sports sciences and the physical education, and sports colleges has an effect on their decision-making. Significant differences were found in terms of the variables of gender, grade level, the department where they study and the place they live. Accordingly, it was concluded that depending on the increased perception of depression of the students about themselves, a very slight increase was seen in the level of their dilatory decision-making. © Kamla-Raj 2016

Ureterolithotripsy under Spinal Anesthesia in Pompe Disease (Glycogen Storage Disease Type 2): A Case Report

    No full text
ABSTRACT Pompe disease is an autosomal recessive inherited glycogen storage disease, usually respiratory muscles, cardiac muscle and skeletal muscles are affected in childhood and mortality is inevitable but has a slower progression in the adult. The patient was a 35-year-old male patient who was scheduled to undergo ureterorenoscopy due to right ureteral stone. He was diagnosed with pompe disease after detection of myopathy on EMG due to muscle weakness in the legs and hips. He was started on myozyme vials once every 15 days. Spinal anesthesia with 3 ml 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine was performed and adequate sensorial and motor block was achieves at T 10 level. The surgery was completed with no complications and he was discharged two days later. The selection of appropriate anesthetic technique and a careful perioperative and postoperative monitoring are of utmost importance due to progressive muscle weakness, hypotonia, respiratory failure and cardiomyopathy in pompe disease

The effect of EMLA cream on patient-controlled analgesia with remifentanil in ESWL procedure: A placebo-controlled randomized study

Background: To alleviate stinging pain in the skin entry area and visceral discomfort in patients who are undergoing ESWL. Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of the EMLA cream in combination with remifentanil patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) in patients undergoing ESWL treatment. Patients and Methods: Sixty patients were divided into two double-blind randomized groups. Those in the first group were administered 3-5mm of EMLA 5% cream on a marked area; the second group received, as a placebo, a cream with no analgesic effect in the same amount. All patients were administered a remifentanil bolus with a PCA device. Arterial blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate were recorded throughout the procedure; postoperative side effects, agitation, and respiratory depression were measured after. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores were taken preoperatively, perioperatively, directly postoperatively, and 60 minutes subsequent to finishing the procedure. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of PCA demands and delivered boluses or among perioperative VAS. No significant side effects were noted. Patient satisfaction was recorded high in both groups. Conclusions: EMLA cream offered no advantage over the placebo cream in patients undergoing ESWL with remifentanil PCA. © 2013 Iranian Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine

Destination management: Right or wrong measures

Planning studies are important for the competitiveness of destinations and their actions with the principles of sustainability. Kuşadası and Didim, which have been among the most important mass tourism destinations in Turkey since 1960, have also long experienced common problems such as lack of coordination, environmental and infrastructural problems, and a lack of an integrated destination approach. Although a series of initiatives have been attempted to solve these problems—with a series of initiatives and good intentions—these initiatives have ultimately failed to achieve their outcomes. The current study aims to present the problems faced with destination management in both destinations. Specifically, it explains the whole process of destination management, including an attempt to guide and play a mediating role for stakeholders through a participatory approach. Therefore, revealing salient problems experienced in both destinations and preparing action plans for the solution of these problems are possible. The research is based on qualitative data from key stakeholders and opinion leaders. The process of data collection took almost two years, including one kick-off meeting, four workshops, and five mini-meetings. In addition, seven in-depth interviews were carried out to follow up on the outcomes. Although common problems such as lack of cooperation, coordination, budget, qualified workforce, infrastructure, and promotion have been identified, establishing a coordination platform and preparing action plans seems to remain remote. Therefore, despite all efforts, attempts at management planning may be regarded as an example of destination management failure
