In this practitioner‘s paper, we share why and how Angkatan Sasterawan‘ 50 (ASAS 50) has explored and embraced Web 2.0 technologies extensively to showcase the rich Malay‗s cultural and literacy materials from the past. At the same time, the integration of such technology and literacy will help to promote the preservation for the future generation in a conceited effort to raise their awareness of the core values and identities of where and who their fore-fathers‘ were. For a period of about six months, we have been spending time to comprehend the historical backdrop of ASAS 50. It includes the rationale of its creation and where it envisioned being in the future. And for the six months that followed, the actual work of design begun. Thus, we conceptualized a general model based on certain known ones such as Porter Five‘s Forces to shield ourselves from future coercion (Porter, 2008) and strategic alignment model from Henderson & Venkatraman (1993). The new website is paving ways for marrying new technology with the information needs of the organisation. This movement is to promote literacy to the young generation who are more technologically inclined and exposing them to the importance of the Malay‘s language, heritage and culture (Delamere, 1996). In order to align with the organisation needs and the technology adoption, ASAS 50 is ready to embrace new social technologies. During the initial phase, the site has received a healthy growth in visitor-ships. Social web systems have offered new opportunities for us to engage the community and produce better search relevancy. The paper only captures the sentiments of the local scene. However, our plan does include the foresight of reaching to other countries. Thus, the idea of the portal being conceived from the beginning adopting English as the main medium to break the language differences was a sound move. The content however remained authentic to its value of Malay roots. The paper recommends the steps of implementing social web components into the uncharted domain of the literacy world. It also highlights the success aspects that can be used for any future literacy and technology collaborations by interested parties

A significant development of open science movement has been witnessed in the last five years. This could bring a fresh start to Indonesian academia. The objective of this paper is to showcase the advancement of open science concept and implementation that can be adopted to increase impact. We did a literature review on peer-reviewed papers, websites of funding agency, open science blogs, and threads on Twitter. We believe the values of research output are not limited to a paper in a high reputation journal. Data is now considered as separate output, as well as, data management protocols, and laboratory notebooks. Publishing research results as a preprint is also used to disseminate findings as rapid and as fast as possible. Post publication peer-review is also added to the reviewing system to add openness, transparency, and objectivity. It offers credit to the reviewers. We also see the growth of impact indicators as the results of San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) statutory. More initiatives and technologies have been introduced to make science more open, transparent, and inclusive. With so many developments have been made, therefore it’s not wise for Indonesian academia to rely themselves only to the old perception of research outputs and impact indicators.

Since the evolution of information and communication technologies in the past decade, most libraries and librarians have experienced the widespread embracement of Web 2.0 technologies and the pervasiveness of mobile devices in their discussion on data management today. It has always been a challenge for librarians to keep up-to-date with the technologies. But, it has never been an impossible mission for most librarians who have the passion for building and devoloping online information services for the community and these are also the current challenges faced library vendors (or partners). Innovative library web marketing practices in Singapore : a landscape of hype, expectation and reality

    No full text
With the current rapid development of internet technologies, marketing models have moved into the global virtual arena and are creating an impact on traditional promotional practices of libraries in Singapore. As observed, the value created today of such marketing models is perceived as being based on creative and innovative use of information, communication, social networking and web technologies. The exponential growth of virtual communities in recent years has led to social networks becoming increasingly popular. This is in part due to the ability of social networks to connect across diverse communities and dispersed locations virtually and globally regardless of time and physical space. This paper aims to provide an exploration and assessment of the adoption of commonly used web marketing tools by libraries in Singapore in their attempt to integrate these tools as part of a strategic, creative and innovative method for library advocacy and service promotion. This paper also attempts to look into explorations by libraries in Singapore to integrate the traditional (Web 1.0) and new (Web 2.0) web technologies into areas of library marketing and outreach activities to an increasingly diverse community of library users, who are adept with social networking tools and have embraced social networks and virtual communities as a part of their life. A review of currently available web marketing tools is also made. A study of the current state of web marketing practices adopted by libraries in Singapore is presented. Initiatives, based on a web marketing model, are proposed to move libraries in Singapore into a new role as an info-concierge, where individual information object or library activity is a self-sustainable, self-contained unit of content or service that can be effectively marketed in any form or format to each library’s community of users.Accepted versio
