    Efficient Data Collection in Multimedia Vehicular Sensing Platforms

    Vehicles provide an ideal platform for urban sensing applications, as they can be equipped with all kinds of sensing devices that can continuously monitor the environment around the travelling vehicle. In this work we are particularly concerned with the use of vehicles as building blocks of a multimedia mobile sensor system able to capture camera snapshots of the streets to support traffic monitoring and urban surveillance tasks. However, cameras are high data-rate sensors while wireless infrastructures used for vehicular communications may face performance constraints. Thus, data redundancy mitigation is of paramount importance in such systems. To address this issue in this paper we exploit sub-modular optimisation techniques to design efficient and robust data collection schemes for multimedia vehicular sensor networks. We also explore an alternative approach for data collection that operates on longer time scales and relies only on localised decisions rather than centralised computations. We use network simulations with realistic vehicular mobility patterns to verify the performance gains of our proposed schemes compared to a baseline solution that ignores data redundancy. Simulation results show that our data collection techniques can ensure a more accurate coverage of the road network while significantly reducing the amount of transferred data

    Interprofessional Collaboration and Diabetes Management in Primary Care: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Patient-Reported Outcomes

    The global spread of diabetes poses serious threats to public health requiring a patient-centered approach based both on interprofessional collaboration (IPC) given by the cooperation of several different health professionals, and patients’ perspective through the assessment of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs). The aim of the present study is to evaluate the impact of interprofessional collaboration interventions, for the management of type 2 diabetes in primary care settings, through PROs. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted querying the PubMed, Scopus and Embase databases. Out of the 1961 papers initially retrieved, 19 met the inclusion criteria. Interprofessional collaboration is significantly associated with an increase in both patient’s satisfaction (SMD 0.32 95% CI 0.05–0.59) and in the mental well-being component of the HRQoL (SMD 0.18; 95% CI 0.06–0.30), and there was also promising evidence supporting the association between an interprofessional approach and an increase in self-care and in generic and specific quality-of-life. No statistical differences were found, supporting the positive impact on IPC interventions on the physical component of the HRQoL, depression, emotional distress, and self-efficacy. In conclusion, the effect of IPC impacts positively on the few areas assessed by PROMs. Policymakers should promote the widespread adoption of a collaborative approach as well as to endorse an active engagement of patients across the whole process of care

    Trace metal levels in the edible tissues of sea cucumbers (Holothuria tubulosa and Holothuria polii) from Sardinia (Western Mediterranean)

    Sea cucumbers represent an important part of the diet in Asian and Pacific regions and are also used in traditional medicine. These habits have led to the overexploitation of local sea cucumber populations in these areas, driving the pursuit of new stock regions, such as Mediterranean areas. In Italy, contrarily to that observed for other Mediterranean countries, the exploitation of sea cucumber stocks is not extensive, which opens a new market opportunity. Thus, from a food safety perspective, this work aims at reporting the first assessment of trace metal concentrations (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb) in the edible tissues of Holothuria polii and Holoturia tubulosa collected in Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Metal concentrations found in H. polii were generally higher than in H. tubulosa. However, in both species, they were lower than those reported for other areas of the Western Mediterranean. Cd, Hg, and Pb were below the limits established for seafood in Europe. As concentrations were in the range of those measured in other commercial seafood species in the Mediterranean. Thus, these species may be harvested and traded to fulfil the demands of local and international markets

    Takayasu's arteritis overlapping with systemic sclerosis

    We describe an unusual case of overlap between Takayasu's arteritis (TA) and systemic sclerosis (SSc). TA has been found in association with several diseases, but not with SSc. To our knowledge this is the first case report of TA associated with SSc in the literature. It is possible that the expression of the two diseases in our patient was influenced by the presence of genetic factors predisposing to both TA and SSc

    Educational Interventions for Promoting Food Literacy and Patient Engagement in Preventing Complications of Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review

    The present review aims to map the current literature on educational interventions to promote food literacy in type 2 diabetes, with a particular focus on the concept of patient engagement. The systematic review was implemented on five databases with no restrictions on the publication year. The studies selected for the review were focused on patients with type 2 diabetes, ranging from 2003 to 2021 and published in 13 countries (44% USA). Thirty-three articles were analyzed. Twenty-seven articles targeted singular patients; fifteen articles conceptualized patient engagement as self-management. In seven articles, the provider is a multidisciplinary team. Twenty articles did not report a theoretical framework in the intervention development, and eleven did not use an intervention material. Twenty-six articles did not use a technology proxy. Outcome categories were narratively mapped into four areas: clinical, psychological, behavioral, and literacy. To date, most of the interventions are heterogeneous in the adopted methodology, measures, and outcomes considered. More attention should be given to the psychosocial characterization of patient engagement as well as the technological support. High-quality, randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies are lacking and need to be conducted to verify the efficacy of these insights
