    Conjugated linoleic acid reduces permeability and fluidity of adipose plasma membranes from obese Zucker rats

July 2010; 398 (2): 199-204.Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a dietary fatty acid frequently used as a body fat reducing agent whose effects upon cell membranes and cellular function remain unknown. Obese Zucker rats were fed atherogenic diets containing saturated fats of vegetable or animal origin with or without 1% CLA, as a mixture of cis(c)9,trans(t)11 and t10,c12 isomers. Plasma membrane vesicles obtained from visceral adi- pose tissue were used to assess the effectiveness of dietary fat and CLA membrane incorporation and its outcome on fluidity and permeability to water and glycerol. A significant decrease in adipose membrane fluidity was correlated with the changes observed in permeability, which seem to be caused by the incor- poration of the t10,c12 CLA isomer into membrane phospholipids. These results indicate that CLA supple- mentation in obese Zucker rats fed saturated and cholesterol rich diets reduces the fluidity and permeability of adipose membranes, therefore not supporting CLA as a body fat reducing agent through membrane fluidification in obese fat consumers

Characterization studies should therefore include quantitative information for both algae and macroinvertebrates. Unlike for the algae, minimal sampling areas are undefined for macroinvertebrates in the Azores. The present study defines the minimal area to be used for the assessment of the abundance of conspicuous benthic macroinvertebrate abundance. This study proposes methodologies to be used for a selected group of invertebrates when simultaneously undertaking quantifications of macroalgae

The robot was substantially redesigned in order to achieve high reliability, allow better control and coordination capabilities and substantial increase in perception. New mechanical and hardware redesign is presented. Motion control subsystems, new vision hardware sensor and overall architecture are described. The team redesign is done for preparation for participating in the Robocup 2004. The main goal is to achieve not only an important evolution in the team control and coordination but also increased overall reliability

    Soil stabilisation using alkaline activation of fly ash for self-compacting rammed earth construction

    This paper studies the effectiveness of alkaline activation of low-calcium fly ash on the improvement of residual granitic soils to be used on rammed-earth construction. Different liquid:solid ratios, alkali concentrations and Na2O : ash ratios were tested. Effect of calcium hidroxide, sodium chloride and concrete superplasticiser is also reported. Compressive strength up to 7 days at 60ºC was determined. Results show that, in terms of mechanical strength, there is an optimum value for the activator:solids ratio and the alkali concentration, and that a decrease in the Na2O:ash ratio results in strength increase. No improvement was observed with the sodium chloride or the superplasticiser, while the calcium produced only a short term increase in strength. SEM/EDS analysis were used to analyse microstructural development, showing that strength is fairly related to the Si:Al and Na:Si ratios

    Effects of coastal orientation and depth on the distribution of subtidal benthic assemblages

    Copyright © 2013 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.A better understanding of biological systems can only be gained if we understand what processes are important and how they operate to determine the distribution of organisms. Coastal orientation and depth can influence environmental conditions, including the degree of water motion and availability of light, which in turn may influence the horizontal and vertical patterns of organism distribution. Here, we used a mixed-model design to examine the effects of coastal orientation and depth on the structure of benthic assemblages by comparing the abundance and distribution of macroalgae and invertebrates in shallow and deep waters on the opposing coasts of Sa˜o Miguel. Generally, coastal orientation had little influence on the distribution of most taxa. In contrast, significant differences were generally associated with depth, although patterns were spatially variable at the scale of locations. This study suggests that depth, and processes operating at the scale of location, but not at the scale of the coast, have an important influence on these assemblages, and that failure to recognise such a scale of variability may hamper our ability to better understand the processes that structure these communities

    CEBs stabilised with geopolymeric binders: mechanical performance of dry-stack masonry

    The sustainability in the building industry is currently a sounding topic, seeking the development of more environmental friendly building materials. The incorporation of industrial wastes and the reuse of construction and demolition waste (CDW) in the production of building materials are methods being used to solve this problem. Furthermore, these methods contribute to fulfilling the targets defined by European Union for the valorisation of non-hazard waste. The construction with compressed earth blocks (CEBs) stabilised with geopolymeric binders is a solution that can contribute to this objective by incorporating both CDW (excavation soil) and industrial wastes. Despite some recent research done on this topic, it still deserves further investigation. This paper intends to contribute to the development of this topic by presenting an experimental program, continuing previous research. The experimental program is addressed to the mechanical characterisation of a dry-stack CEB (stabilised with geopolymer obtained from alkaline activation of fly ash) masonry system, and includes the evolution of the strength of the CEBs with the curing time.     Production and characterization of green and black olive paste using cream of animal and vegetable origins

    Now-a-days the quest for foods with high flavonoid polyphenols content, lower fat concentration and relative high proportion of monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids is increasing. Following this tendency green and black olive pastes applying soy cream or cream of animal origin were produced equating a subsequent industrial output, and the rheological, physicochemical and sensory characteristics of were characterized. It was found that the cohesiveness, adhesiveness and hardness of the black olive paste having cream of animal origin showed minimal values. Among samples the moisture varied between 67.15 -72.16% and the inorganic residue of the black olive pastes were also significantly lower from the green olive pastes. Minimum and maximum pH values were measured in green olive paste having soy cream and black paste with cream of animal origin, respectively. The crude fat showed significant differences among the olive pastes, whereas the protein content did not vary significantly. The colour of the black paste with cream of animal origin and soy were slightly orange, whereas the green paste remained green. The sensory analysis of the black olive paste including cream of animal origin showed lower average values for consistency and appearance attributes but the opposite occurred with the salty taste and overall assessment. Concerning to the aroma, the black olive pastes showed the highest values, while the green olive pastes kept similar values. It is concluded that the higher pH of the black olive pastes in conjunction with the water contents limits the shelf life and clearly pointed the need a careful microbial control. Considering that the colour parameters of a food is the first contact point of the consumer, these descriptors in the green olive pastes also seemed to have better acceptance, whereas preferences did not followed healthy options
