    Texture and colour kinetics of change in blanched carrots

    Five Isothermal heating experiments, at different temperatures and at predetermined time intervals, were carried out on diced carrots. The objective of this study was to determine the degradation kinetics of colour (a and a/b parameters) and texture (work and maximum force) along blanching. The best model to fit the degradation kinetic data was the fractional conversion and the temperature effect was well described by the Arrhenius equation. The k 800c and Ea values were 0.2, 0.05, 0.5 and 0.05 min -1 and 12x103, 18x103, 49x103 and 192x103J/mol, respectively for a, a/b, maximum force and work

    Matrix Assisted Formation of Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles in a Siloxane/Poly(Oxyethylene) Nanohybrid

    Matrix-assisted formation of ferrihydrite, an iron oxide hydroxide analogue of the protein ferritin-core, in a sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid is reported. The hybrid network (named di-ureasil) is composed of poly(oxyethylene) chains of different average polymer molecular weights grafted to siloxane domains by means of urea cross-linkages and accommodates ferrihydrite nanoparticles. Magnetic measurements, Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveal that the controlled modification of the polymer molecular weight allows the fine-tuning of the ability of the hybrid matrix to assist and promote iron coordination at the organic-inorganic interface and subsequent nucleation and growth of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles whose core size (2-4 nm) is tuned by the amount of iron incorporated. The polymer chain length, its arrangement and crystallinity, are key factors on the anchoring and formation of the ferrihydrite particles.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. To be published in J. Mater.     A case study of molinate application in a Portuguese rice field: herbicide dissipation and proposal of a clean-up methodology

    This study was designed to monitor molinate losses in surface and underground waters during Ordram application in a rice field situated in central Portugal. Water samples were collected from different sites, before, during and about one month and a half after Ordram application. Molinate quantification was based on a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) method followed by gas chromatography with flame photometric detector (GC–FPD) analysis, and led to the conclusion that the herbicide was dissipated in the environment, reaching levels as high as 3.9 lg l⁻¹ in underground water and 15.8 lg l⁻¹ in the river receiving tail waters. The feasibility of the application of treatment methodologies based on adsorption or biodegradation as processes to remove molinate from real-world waters was assessed. These methods seem suitable to reduce molinate concentrations to values in the range of the legally recommended limits (<0.5 lg l⁻¹)

    Aplicação do algoritmo LEGAL/SPRING na cobertura florestal do município de Ivorá/RS nos anos de 2011 e 2012.

    Neste trabalho, foram utilizadas técnicas de sensoriamento remoto a fim de analisar a distribuição dos recursos florestais do Município de Ivorá, RS, enfocando sua evolução, para, com isso, manejar a área do município visando a sustentabilidades de suas atividades. A área de estudo é caracterizada pelos biomas Mata Atlântica e Pampa, característicos do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, e tem sua economia fortemente baseada na pecuária e agricultura. Para a realização do trabalho, foram utilizados dados temporais do satélite RapidEye, sensor Reis, datados de 2011 e 2012. Foi criado um banco de dados, que foi usado para: testar variadas composições e contrastes; definir as legendas das categorias de uso e cobertura da terra; realizar testes de segmentação, classificação das imagens e elaborar uma programação em Linguagem Espacial para Geoprocessamento Algébrico (LEGAL) (CÂMARA, 1995); e elaborar os mapas temáticos. A classificação supervisionada das imagens revelou que a classe de uso do solo ?Floresta? foi predominante no município em 2011 e 2012, quando representou um quarto da sua área total. Conclui-se que, por meio da análise LEGAL, houve aumento da expansão florestal em detrimento do desmatamento, o que evidencia a importância da análise de uso do solo para a adequação e o planejamento ambiental do município
