X-rays from cataclysmic variables
Cataclysmic Variables are a distinct class of interacting binaries, transferring mass from a donor star to a degenerate accretor, a white dwarf. We here review X-ray observations of these systems, with some emphasis on what has been achieved in the last decade
Monitoring of transiting exoplanets and their host stars with small aperture telescopes
Exoplanet research is now target rich with a wide diversity of systems making it difficult for high demand observatories to undertake follow up observations over extended periods of time. We investigate the effectiveness of using 0.4m-class telescopes for monitoring transiting hot Jupiters and their host stars. We consider two representative case studies: WASP-52b with 13 new transits, and HAT-P-23b with 17 new transits and concurrent photometric monitoring covering 78 days. We present updated system parameters and combine our new transit times with previously published results to calculate new ephemerides for both systems. Our analysis of transit mid-times for WASP52b results in a slight preference for a quadratic ephemeris (âÏ2Îœ = 0.07, âBIC = 1.53 over a linear ephemeris. We discuss the reality of this quadratic ephemeris indicating a period change of ÎŽP/ÎŽt = â38.6 ± 4 ms yrâ1 and consider possible causes. WASP-52 is known to be an active star with previous publications reporting many spot crossing events, however no such events are seen in our new photometry. Our analysis shows that WASP-52 is still active and that the latitude of the spots has likely migrated away from the transit chord. We confirm the inflated nature and circular orbit for HAT-P-23b. Our monitoring of HAT-P-23 reveals a periodicity of 7.015 days with an amplitude of 0.011 mag which we interpret as the rotation period of HAT-P-23. The photometric and transit timing precision achieved in the case studies shows that this class of telescope is capable of precise characterisation and long-term monitoring of transiting hot Jupiters in support of dedicated ongoing and future ground and space based observations
Mitoxantrone is superior to doxorubicin in a multiagent weekly regimen for patients older than 60 with high-grade lymphoma: results of a BNLI randomized trial of PAdriaCEBO versus PMitCEBO
A prospective, multicenter, randomized trial was undertaken to compare the efficacy and toxicity of adriamycin with mitoxantrone within a 6-drug combination chemotherapy regimen for elderly patients (older than 60 years) with high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma (HGL) given for a minimum of 8 weeks. A total of 516 previously untreated patients aged older than 60 years were randomized to receive 1 of 2 anthracycline-containing regimens: adriamycin, 35 mg/m2 intravenously (IV) on day 1 (n = 259), or mitoxantrone, 7 mg/m2 IV on day 1 (n = 257); with prednisolone, 50 mg orally on days 1 to 14; cyclophosphamide, 300 mg/m2 IV on day 1; etoposide, 150 mg/m2 IV on day 1; vincristine, 1.4 mg/m2 IV on day 8; and bleomycin, 10 mg/m2 IV on day 8. Each 2-week cycle was administered for a minimum of 8 weeks in the absence of progression. Forty-three patients were ineligible for analysis. The overall and complete remission rates were 78% and 60% for patients receiving PMitCEBO and 69% and 52% for patients receiving PAdriaCEBO (P = .05, P = .12, respectively). Overall survival was significantly better with PMitCEBO than PAdriaCEBO (P = .0067). However, relapse-free survival was not significantly different (P = .16). At 4 years, 28% of PAdriaCEBO patients and 50% of PMitCEBO patients were alive (P = .0001). Ann Arbor stage III/IV, World Health Organization performance status 2-4, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase negatively influenced overall survival from diagnosis. In conclusion, the PMitCEBO 8-week combination chemotherapy regimen offers high response rates, durable remissions, and acceptable toxicity in elderly patients with HGL
Mineral resource information in support of national, regional and local planning : Cheshire (comprising Cheshire, Boroughs of Halton and Warrington)
This report is one of a series prepared by the British Geological Survey for various administrative areas in England for the Office of the Deputy Prime Ministerâs research project Mineral Resource Information in Support of National, Regional and Local Planning.
The accompanying map relates to the county of Cheshire (comprising Cheshire, Boroughs of Halton and Warrington), and delineates the mineral resources of current, or potential, economic interest in the area and the sites where minerals are or have been worked. It also relates these to national planning designations, which may represent constraints on the extraction of minerals.
Three major elements of information are presented:
âą the geological distribution and importance of mineral resources;
âą the extent of mineral planning permissions and the location of current mineral workings; and
âą the extent of selected, nationally-designated planning constraints.
This wide range of information, much of which is scattered and not always available in a consistent and convenient form, is presented on a digitally-generated summary map on the scale of 1:100 000. This scale is convenient for the overall display of the data and allows for a legible topographic base on which to depict the information. However, all the data are held digitally at larger scales using a Geographical Information System (GIS), which allows easy revision, updating and customisation of the information together with its possible integration with other datasets. The information will form part of a Summary of the Mineral Resources of the North West Region.
The purpose of the work is to assist all interested parties involved in the preparation and review of development plans, both in relation to the extraction of minerals and the protection of mineral resources from sterilisation. It provides a knowledge base, in a consistent format, on the nature and extent of mineral resources and the environmental constraints, which may affect their extraction. An important objective is to provide baseline data for the long term. The results may also provide a starting point for discussion on specific planning proposals for minerals extraction or on proposals, which may sterilise resources.
It is anticipated that the map and report will also provide valuable background data for a much wider audience, including the different sectors of the minerals industry, other agencies and authorities (e.g. The Planning Inspectorate Agency, the Environment Agency, The Countryside Agency and English Nature), environmental interests and the general public.
Basic mineral resource information is essential to support mineral exploration and development activities, for resource management and land-use planning, and to establish baseline data for environmental impact studies and environmental guidelines. It also enables a more sustainable pattern and standard of development to be achieved by valuing mineral resources as national assets.
The mineral resources covered are sand and gravel, crushed rock aggregate, silica sand, salt, brick clay, building stones, peat, coal, hydrocarbons and metalliferous mineralisation

Evidence for large superhumps in TX Col and V4742 Sgr
Since the discovery of the largest positive superhump period in TV Col, we
have started a program to search for superhumps in CVs with large orbital
periods. Here, we summarize preliminary results of TX Col and V4742 Sgr. TX Col
is an intermediate polar with a 5.7-h orbital period. V4742 Sgr is a recent
nova with no known periods. CCD unfiltered continuous photometry of these 2
objects was carried out during 56 nights in 2002-3. In TX Col, in addition to
the orbital period of 5.7 h, we found peaks at 7.1 h and 5.0 h. These are
interpreted as positive and negative superhumps correspondingly, although the
effects of the quasi-periodic oscillations at about 2 h were not taken into
consideration. In the light curve of V4742 Sgr 2 long periods are detected --
6.1 and 5.4 h as well as a short-term period at 1.6 h. This result suggests
that V4742 Sgr is an intermediate polar candidate and a permanent superhump
system with a large orbital period (5.4 h) and a superhump period excess of 13
percent. If these results are confirmed, TX Col, V4742 Sgr and TV Col form a
group of intermediate polars with extremely large superhump periods. There
seems to be now growing evidence that superhumps can occur in intermediate
polars with long orbital periods, which is very likely inconsistent with the
theoretical prediction that superhumps can only occur in systems with mass
ratios below 0.33. Alternatively, if the mass ratio in these systems is
nevertheless below the theoretical limit, they should harbour undermassive
secondaries and massive white dwarfs, near the Chandrasekhar limit, which would

Direct observation by resonant tunneling of the B^+ level in a delta-doped silicon barrier
We observe a resonance in the conductance of silicon tunneling devices with a
delta-doped barrier. The position of the resonance indicates that it arises
from tunneling through the B^+ state of the boron atoms of the delta-layer.
Since the emitter Fermi level in our devices is a field-independent reference
energy, we are able to directly observe the diamagnetic shift of the B^+ level.
This is contrary to the situation in magneto-optical spectroscopy, where the
shift is absorbed in the measured ionization energy.Comment: submitted to PR
Idling Magnetic White Dwarf in the Synchronizing Polar BY Cam. The Noah-2 Project
Results of a multi-color study of the variability of the magnetic cataclysmic
variable BY Cam are presented. The observations were obtained at the Korean
1.8m and Ukrainian 2.6m, 1.2m and 38-cm telescopes in 2003-2005, 56
observational runs cover 189 hours. The variations of the mean brightness in
different colors are correlated with a slope dR/dV=1.29(4), where the number in
brackets denotes the error estimates in the last digits. For individual runs,
this slope is much smaller ranging from 0.98(3) to 1.24(3), with a mean value
of 1.11(1). Near the maximum, the slope becomes smaller for some nights,
indicating more blue spectral energy distribution, whereas the night-to-night
variability has an infrared character. For the simultaneous UBVRI photometry,
the slopes increase with wavelength from dU/dR=0.23(1) to dI/dR=1.18(1). Such
wavelength dependence is opposite to that observed in non-magnetic cataclysmic
variables, in an agreement to the model of cyclotron emission. The principal
component analysis shows two (with a third at the limit of detection)
components of variablitity with different spectral energy distribution, which
possibly correspond to different regions of emission. The scalegram analysis
shows a highest peak corresponding to the 200-min spin variability, its quarter
and to the 30-min and 8-min QPOs. The amplitudes of all these components are
dependent on wavelength and luminosity state. The light curves were fitted by a
statistically optimal trigonometrical polynomial (up to 4-th order) to take
into account a 4-hump structure. The dependences of these parameters on the
phase of the beat period and on mean brightness are discussed. The amplitude of
spin variations increases with an increasing wavelength and with decreasing

Fast Bounds on the Distribution of Smooth Numbers
In this paper we present improvements to Bernsteinâs algorithm, which finds rigorous upper and lower bounds for (x, y)
First Observation and Measurement of the Decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e- gamma
Using the full data set of the NA48/2 experiment, the decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e-
gamma is observed for the first time, selecting 120 candidates with 7.3 +- 1.7
estimated background events. With K+- -> pi+- pi0D as normalisation channel,
the branching ratio is determined in a model-independent way to be Br(K+- ->
pi+- e+ e- gamma, m_eegamma > 260 MeV/c^2) = (1.19 +- 0.12_stat +- 0.04_syst) x
10^-8. This measured value and the spectrum of the e+ e- gamma invariant mass
