Vulnerability of LTE to Hostile Interference

LTE is well on its way to becoming the primary cellular standard, due to its performance and low cost. Over the next decade we will become dependent on LTE, which is why we must ensure it is secure and available when we need it. Unfortunately, like any wireless technology, disruption through radio jamming is possible. This paper investigates the extent to which LTE is vulnerable to intentional jamming, by analyzing the components of the LTE downlink and uplink signals. The LTE physical layer consists of several physical channels and signals, most of which are vital to the operation of the link. By taking into account the density of these physical channels and signals with respect to the entire frame, as well as the modulation and coding schemes involved, we come up with a series of vulnerability metrics in the form of jammer to signal ratios. The ``weakest links'' of the LTE signals are then identified, and used to establish the overall vulnerability of LTE to hostile interference.Comment: 4 pages, see below for citation. M. Lichtman, J. Mechanisms of Enhanced Pulmonary Vasoconstriction and Calcium Sensitization Following Chronic Hypoxia

CH results in pressure dependent basal tone and enhanced depolarization- and endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced vasoconstriction in the pulmonary circulation through Rho kinase (ROK)-dependent Ca2+ sensitization, responses that may contribute to the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in this setting. The free radical superoxide (O2-) has been implicated in these responses. Because NADPH oxidases (NOX) play a role in the development of PH, we hypothesized that membrane depolarization, increases in intraluminal pressure, and ET-1 signaling lead to pulmonary vascular smooth muscle (VSM) myofilament Ca2+ sensitization and augmented vasoconstrictor reactivity following CH through NOX-derived O2- production. As epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and Src kinases can mediate NOX activation, we further hypothesized that Src-induced EGFR activation mediates this response. Vasoconstrictor responses to ET-1 and KCl were greater in Ca2+ permeabilized, endothelium-disrupted, pressurized, pulmonary arteries from CH (4 wk at 0.5 atm) rats compared to controls, and this effect of CH was abolished by NOX inhibition. NOX inhibition additionally prevented KCl-dependent O2- production in CH arteries. Furthermore, inhibition of EGFR and Src kinases also prevented augmented ET-1- and KCl-induced vasoconstriction and the development of basal tone. Rats treated chronically with an EGFR inhibitor (gefitinib) displayed reduced right ventricular pressure and diminished arterial remodeling associated with CH-dependent PH. We additionally determined that vascular smooth muscle membrane depolarization contributes to basal tone but not vasoconstriction to ET-1 in CH arteries by clamping membrane potential with valinomycin. Our studies support a novel role for a Src kinase/EGFR/NOX 2 signaling axis in the enhanced pulmonary vascular smooth muscle VSM Ca2+ sensitization, vasoconstriction and PH following CH

Effect of Instruction Type on Successful Completion of a Task

Instructions play a valuable part in modern society, but their effectiveness is often questioned. In this study, 33 undergraduate students completed a series of simple Lego® tasks using three forms of instructional methods. Step-by-step instructions consisting of written instructions, pictorial instructions, or a combination of the two were tested. The number of correctly completed steps and total time taken for each task was collected. Although there was no difference in accuracy with pictorial or combined instruction types, both written and combined instruction types resulted in greater accuracy. No difference between the pictorial and combined instructions could be found, however. The mere presence of pictures may play a role in accurately and timely completion of a simple construction task. Instructions are found virtually everywhere in everyday life. However, their usefulness is often questioned. Manuals are often ignored for assembly until last resort; yet, educational instructions are widely used and provide valuable information. Researchers have explored instructional methods and their ease of use in many studies. One largely researched form of instructions are teaching methods and testing methods. Lamude and Wolven (1998) stress that a teacher\u27s clarity can have an impact on the learning environment. Dwyer and De Melo (1984) report that overall recall when taking a test was improved when illustrations were either utilized in learning the subject, or in the design of the exam. Macneil (1980) found that there was no significant difference between expository and discovery methods of teaching. Several studies have compared different map types as instructional methods and have found that drivers prefer and perform better when illustrated maps are available (Kovach, Surrette & Aamodt, 1988; Wright, Lickorish, Hull & Ummelen, 1995). Teaching styles for physical activities have also been compared. Verbal and written instructions for scuba diving were equally beneficial (Green & Powell, 1988); while there appears to be a difference between auditory, visual, and tactile based instruction for tennis lessons (Kennedy, 1995). Ability to put together a movie projector was not altered by instructional method (modeling, illustrations, and video presented with audio) (Butts, 1979). In computer-based learning, Mayer, Down, and Mayer (2003) found narrative instructions to be more beneficial than text-based instructions on interactive-based tasks. Lastly, a simple marble task was designed by Powell and Howard (1990) to assess the difference in success between written, verbal, and a combination of the two methods. They found no significant difference between the two groups. Researchers have primarily focused on the difference between visual and verbal instruction methods. Each type could be dependent on the task being completed. This study focuses on visually-based instructions that are used to assemble a series of simple building block tasks. The purpose of this study is to compare written instructions, pictorial instructions, and a combination of the two when completing a simple Lego® building task. It is predicted that participants who use combined instructions will score a higher level of accuracy (number of correct steps completed) and will complete the tasks in less time

    Evaluating Performance of Components

Parallel Component Performance Benchmarks is a computer program developed to aid the evaluation of the Common Component Architecture (CCA) - a software architecture, based on a component model, that was conceived to foster high-performance computing, including parallel computing. More specifically, this program compares the performances (principally by measuring computing times) of componentized versus conventional versions of the Parallel Pyramid 2D Adaptive Mesh Refinement library - a software library that is used to generate computational meshes for solving physical problems and that is typical of software libraries in use at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Serving the Tucson Refugee Community: A Snapshot of Key Issues and Concerns 2010-2011

This report was prepared by graduate and undergraduate student researchers at the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA) in the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona. Building on work conducted over almost a decade during which BARA researchers responded to and initiated questions for study, the researchers set out to investigate several issues facing BARA, Tucson’s refugee community, and the myriad service providers in Tucson who interact with refugees. • Which challenges do refugees and the organizations serving them face, especially given the current economic downturn, and what strategies are they using to overcome those challenges? • How can BARA students and faculty work with resettlement agencies, refugee groups, and the Tucson community at large to be more engaged in solving the problems and challenges faced by refugees and service providers in southern Arizona? As the study progressed and particular issues emerged, the focus was narrowed to address the following questions. • How are the organizations that serve refugees in Tucson using cooperation and collaboration as strategies for surviving in the current unfavorable economic climate? • What specific roles do language and communication play in refugee resettlement? • Which groups at the University of Arizona are working with refugees and service providers, and what role can BARA play to help better coordinate efforts by all participants to serve refugees and service providers more efficiently and effectively
