Search for Squarks and Gluinos with the D0 detector

We report on D0 searches for scalar quarks (tilde-q) and gluinos (tilde-g), the superpartners of quark and gluons, in topologies involving jets and missing transverse energies. Data samples obtained with D0 detector from proton anti-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV corresponding to an intergrated luminosities of 1-4 inverse-fb were analyzed. No evidence for the production of such particles were observed and lower limits on squarks and gluino masses were set.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of DPF-2009, Detroit, MI, July 2009, eConf C09072

Search for Leptoquarks with the D0 detector

We report on D0 searches for leptoquarks (LQ) predicted in extended gauge theories and composite models to explain the symmetry between quarks and leptons. Data samples obtained with the D0 detector from proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV corresponding to intergrated luminosities of 1--4 inverse-fb were analyzed. No evidence for the production of such particles were observed and lower limits on leptoquark masses are set.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of DPF-2009, Detroit, MI, July 2009, eConf C09072

Power and the Role of the Superintendent

    Get PDF
As schools move further into the 21st century, there is a strong need for education leaders and those who train them to prepare students for a future that is decidedly different from the past and to do so in a high stakes accountability environment. In meeting these challenges, school superintendents encounter politics in every arena and constantly use a variety of types of power to accomplish their goals

Experimental study of coherent synchrotron radiation in the emittance exchange line at the A0-photoinjector

Next generation accelerators will require a high current, low emittance beam with a low energy spread. Such accelerators will employ advanced beam conditioning systems such as emittance exchangers to manipulate high brightness beams. One of the goals of the Fermilab A0 photoinjector is to investigate the transverse to longitudinal emittance exchange principle. Coherent synchrotron radiation could limit high current operation of the emittance exchanger. In this paper, we report on the preliminary experimental and simulation study of the coherent synchroton radiation (CSR) in the emittance exchange line at the A0 photoinjector.Comment: 4 pp. 14th Advanced Accelerator Concepts Workshop, 13-19 Jun 2010: Annapolis, Marylan

Synthesis and characterisation of polythersulphone poly(dimethyl siloxane) block copolymers.

The objectives of this project were to investigate synthetic routes to form block copolymers of polyethersulphone and polydimethylsiloxane, linked through =Si-C= bonds. The work carried out has included the synthesis and characterisation of hydroxyl terminated polyethersulphone oligomers (PES). This material has then been quantitatively functionalised to give vinyl ended PES.A number of hydride terminated polydimethylsiloxane oligomers (PDMS) have also been synthesised and characterised. These materials have been successfully functionalised with epoxy groups through a vinyl addition reaction in the presence of chloroplatinic acid catalyst, incorporating the =Si-C= bond into the PDMS.These polymers, along with purchased carboxy propyl PDMS allowed the investigation of three principle routes to PES/PDMS copolymers (i) the catalysed addition reaction of vinyl PES with hydride terminated PDMS. (ii) the reaction of hydroxyl terminated PES with epoxy functionalised PDMS. (iii) the condensation reaction of hydroxyl terminated PES with carboxy propyl PDMS in the presence of stannous octoate catalyst. All three routes produce (A-B)[n] PES/PDMS block copolymers linked through =Si-C= bonds.Due to the large difference in solubility parameters between PES and PDMS homopolymers, there is great difficulty in producing a homogeneous solution of the reacting polymers. A wide range of solvent systems were investigated before 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE) was found to be the most suitable. Routes (i) and (ii) were investigated as solution reactions in TCE and the reaction products characterised by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1-H nmr) and differential scanning calorimetry (dsc). Both reactions showed only limited success. Route (iii) could not be investigated in solution as a homogeneous solution of the oligomers could not be formed. All three synthetic routes were investigated as reactions in the melt and the products characterised by 1-H nmr and dsc. Routes (ii) and (iii) proving to be the more successful. All three reaction schemes were examined extensively using model compounds and short chain polymeric oligomers and were shown to be suitable routes to form the required block copolymers

Stillbirth and loss: family practices and display

This paper explores how parents respond to their memories of their stillborn child over the years following their loss. When people die after living for several years or more, their family and friends have the residual traces of a life lived as a basis for an identity that may be remembered over a sustained period of time. For the parent of a stillborn child there is no such basis and the claim for a continuing social identity for their son or daughter is precarious. Drawing on interviews with the parents of 22 stillborn children, this paper explores the identity work performed by parents concerned to create a lasting and meaningful identity for their child and to include him or her in their families after death. The paper draws on Finch's (2007) concept of family display and Walter's (1999) thesis that links continue to exist between the living and the dead over a continued period. The paper argues that evidence from the experience of stillbirth suggests that there is scope for development for both theoretical frameworks

    Renewable energy in remote communities

    Get PDF
This article is the result of a competitively tendered University-funded project, this brings together two major Government Policy areas: sustainable communities and use of carbon fuels, and is aimed at influencing the policy debate on the difficulties of linking remote communities to renewable energy production because of poor distribution networks. Linkage with the Sustainable Communities agenda is an essential ingredient, as the proposal is that the renewable energy technologies will be installed and maintained by the communities themselves

Parenting interventions for male young offenders: a review of the evidence on what works

    Get PDF
Approximately one in four incarcerated male young offenders in the UK is an actual or expectant father. This paper reviews evidence on the effectiveness of parenting interventions for male young offenders. We conducted systematic searches across 20 databases and consulted experts. Twelve relevant evaluations were identified: 10 from the UK, of programmes for incarcerated young offenders, and two from the US, of programmes for young parolees. None used experimental methods or included a comparison group. They suggest that participants like the courses, find them useful, and the interventions may improve knowledge about, and attitudes to, parenting. Future interventions should incorporate elements of promising parenting interventions with young fathers in the community, for example, and/or with older incarcerated parents. Young offender fathers have specific developmental, rehabilitative, and contextual needs. Future evaluations should collect longer-term behavioural parent and child outcome data and should use comparison groups and, ideally, randomization
