Labour problems in the sugar industry of Ile de France or Mauritius, 1790 - 1842
The island of Mauritius is situated in the south-western Indian Ocean between 19°591, 20°321 south latitude and 57°18 1 , 57° 49 1 east longitude. The nearest landmass of any considerable extent is Madagascar which Iies some 900 km due west of Mauritius; but there are a number of islands and islets in the vicinity, notably Reunion, Rodrigues and the Cargados Carajos, which together with Mauritius constitute the archipelago of the Mascarenes
MUSE-inspired view of the quasar Q2059-360, its Lyman alpha blob, and its neighborhood
The radio-quiet quasar Q2059-360 at redshift is known to be close to
a small Lyman blob (LAB) and to be absorbed by a proximate damped
Ly (PDLA) system.
Here, we present the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field
spectroscopy follow-up of this quasi-stellar object (QSO). Our primary goal is
to characterize this LAB in detail by mapping it both spatially and spectrally
using the Ly line, and by looking for high-ionization lines to
constrain the emission mechanism.
Combining the high sensitivity of the MUSE integral field spectrograph
mounted on the Yepun telescope at ESO-VLT with the natural coronagraph provided
by the PDLA, we map the LAB down to the QSO position, after robust subtraction
of QSO light in the spectral domain.
In addition to confirming earlier results for the small bright component of
the LAB, we unveil a faint filamentary emission protruding to the south over
about 80 pkpc (physical kpc); this results in a total size of about 120 pkpc.
We derive the velocity field of the LAB (assuming no transfer effects) and map
the Ly line width. Upper limits are set to the flux of the N V , C IV , He II , and C III] lines. We have discovered two probable Ly emitters at the
same redshift as the LAB and at projected distances of 265 kpc and 207 kpc from
the QSO; their Ly luminosities might well be enhanced by the QSO
radiation. We also find an emission line galaxy at near the line of
sight to the QSO.
This LAB shares the same general characteristics as the 17 others surrounding
radio-quiet QSOs presented previously. However, there are indications that it
may be centered on the PDLA galaxy rather than on the QSO.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics; 16 pages, 19

Empirical constraints on vacuum decay in the stringy landscape
It is generally considered as self evident that the lifetime of our vacuum in
the landscape of string theory cannot be much shorter than the current age of
the universe. Here I show why this lower limit is invalid. A certain type of
``parallel universes'' is a necessary consequence of the string-landscape
dynamics and might well allow us to ``survive'' vacuum decay. As a consequence
our stringy vacuum's lifetime is empirically unconstrained and could be very
short. Based on this counter-intuitive insight I propose a novel type of
laboratory experiment that searches for an apparent violation of the
quantum-mechanical Born rule by gravitational effects on vacuum decay. If the
lifetime of our vacuum should turn out to be shorter than 6 x 10^{-13} seconds
such an experiment is sufficiently sensitive to determine its value with
state-of-the-art equipment.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, proposes a laboratory experimen
Human-centered machine learning through interactive visualization
The goal of visual analytics (VA) systems is to solve complex problems by integrating automated data analysis methods, such as machine learning (ML) algorithms, with interactive visualizations. We propose a conceptual framework that models human interactions with ML components in the VA process, and makes the crucial interplay between automated algorithms and interactive visualizations more concrete. The framework is illustrated through several examples. We derive three open research challenges at the intersection of ML and visualization research that will lead to more effective data analysis
Barium & related stars and their white-dwarf companions II. Main-sequence and subgiant stars
Barium (Ba) dwarfs and CH subgiants are the less-evolved analogues of Ba and
CH giants. They are F- to G-type main-sequence stars polluted with heavy
elements by a binary companion when the latter was on the Asymptotic Giant
Branch (AGB). This companion is now a white dwarf that in most cases cannot be
directly detected. We present a large systematic study of 60 objects classified
as Ba dwarfs or CH subgiants. Combining radial-velocity measurements from
HERMES and SALT high-resolution spectra with radial-velocity data from CORAVEL
and CORALIE, we determine the orbital parameters of 27 systems. We also derive
their masses by comparing their location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram
with evolutionary models. We confirm that Ba dwarfs and CH subgiants are not at
different evolutionary stages and have similar metallicities, despite their
different names. Additionally, Ba giants appear significantly more massive than
their main-sequence analogues. This is likely due to observational biases
against the detection of hotter main-sequence post-mass-transfer objects.
Combining our spectroscopic orbits with the Hipparcos astrometric data, we
derive the orbital inclinations and the mass of the WD companion for four
systems. Since this cannot be done for all systems in our sample yet (but
should be with upcoming Gaia data releases), we also analyse the mass-function
distribution of our binaries. We can model this distribution with very narrow
mass distributions for the two components and random orbital orientation on the
sky. Finally, based on BINSTAR evolutionary models, we suggest that the orbital
evolution of low-mass Ba systems can be affected by a second phase of
interaction along the Red Giant Branch of the Ba star, impacting on the
eccentricities and periods of the giants.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on the 5th of April, 201
Effect of long-range Coulomb interaction on shot-noise suppression in ballistic transport
We present a microscopic analysis of shot-noise suppression due to long-range
Coulomb interaction in semiconductor devices under ballistic transport
conditions. An ensemble Monte Carlo simulator self-consistently coupled with a
Poisson solver is used for the calculations. A wide range of injection-rate
densities leading to different degrees of suppression is investigated. A sharp
tendency of noise suppression at increasing injection densities is found to
scale with a dimensionless Debye length related to the importance of
space-charge effects in the structure.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 4 figures, minor correction
