305 Reflections: Remade, Reworked, Reimagined: Sally Brown talks about place

For quite a long time it has been claimed that cultural production in Tasmania has an inimitable and idiosyncratic place within the scheme of things. Sally Brown, a young Tasmanian designer, maker, artist, is unlikely to make this kind of claim for her work. Nonetheless, there is a particular sensibility evident in her work that it is doubtful that one might find anywhere other than in Tasmania – or made by someone of an older generation. This paper attempts to unpick, through four reflections upon Sally’s work, some of the thinking to do with the placedness, the vernacular social paradigm, the subliminal politics, the ‘crafting’ and the cultural savvy that gives Sally Brown’s work its presence. The questions that hang in the air around a collection of Sally Brown’s work are those to do with the ways local cultural imperatives might shape and make places they are found in, and in what ways might places shape the cultural realities that inhabit them. The common C-terminal sequences of substance P and neurokinin A contact the same region of the NK-1 receptor

AbstractAlthough neurokinin A (NKA), a tachykinin peptide with sequence homology to substance P (SP), is a weak competitor of radiolabeled SP binding to the NK-1 receptor (NK-1R), more recent direct binding studies using radiolabeled NKA have demonstrated an unexpected high-affinity interaction with this receptor. To document the site of interaction between NKA and the NK-1R, we have used a photoreactive analogue of NKA containing p-benzoyl-L-phenylalanine (Bpa) substituted in position 7 of the peptide. Peptide mapping studies of the receptor photolabeled by 125I-iodohistidyl1-Bpa7NKA have established that the site of photoinsertion is located within a segment of the receptor extending from residues 178 to 190 (VVCMIEWPEHPNR). We have previously shown that 125I-BH-Bpa8SP, a photoreactive analogue of SP, covalently attaches to M181 within this same receptor sequence. Importantly, both of these peptides (125I-iodohistidyl1-Bpa7NKA and 125I-BH-Bpa8SP) have the photoreactive amino acid in an equivalent position within the conserved tachykinin carboxyl-terminal tail. In this report, we also show that site-directed mutagenesis of M181 to A181 in the NK-1R results in a complete loss of photolabeling of both peptides to this receptor site, indicating that the equivalent position of SP and NKA, when bound to the NK-1R, contact the same residue

Lolita's Time Leaks and Transatlantic Decadence

In this paper I investigate the matrix of transatlantic literary exchange in Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita (1955) in order to suggest how the novel’s rehabilitation of an international decadent aesthetics constitutes a radical challenge to the American literary establishment in the postwar. I begin by identifying the figures of Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Baudelaire and Algernon Swinburne as the key constellation for Nabokov in his plotting of Lolita’s ambivalent engagement with the ethics of temporality and artistic autonomy. I then go on to situate Lolita’s composition within debates current in the American academy from the late 1930s to the early 1950s over the value of decadent aesthetics within the modernist project and anxieties over Poe’s place within American national literary culture. Read alongside the critical writings of T.S. Eliot, Allen Tate, and the New Criticism, Lolita emerges as the risky reinstatement of a transatlantic decadent tradition, in which the failure of temporal and ethical containment disrupts a dominant narrative of modernism’s history in American letters
