    Get PDF
A method for analysing the current distribution in high-T/sub c/ superconducting (HTS) power cable is examined by the aid of the novel use of anisotropic conductivity and 3-D finite element method considering E-J power law characteristic. The detailed current distribution in the cable is illustrated and the shielding effect of HTS shield layer with intervals is also examined. It is shown that AC losses in shield layer with intervals are increased when the interval between wires becomes large

Background: Desmopressin orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) was approved in March 2012 in Japan; the post-market safety reports, which warned about adequate initial dose of desmopressin ODT, were published in 2014. However, it is unclear how the warning affected physician and patient behavior. Methods: We performed a retrospective single-center study to compare the clinical situation of Japanese central diabetes insipidus patients before and after the report. Results: Thirty-four patients before October 2014 and 16 patients after November 2014 switched from intranasal desmopressin to desmopressin ODT. The mean follow-up period after the switch to desmopressin ODT was 38 ± 3 months. Patients switching after November 2014 tended to have lower ratios of oral to nasal desmopressin dose at switching and 3 months after the switch (at switching; P = 0.20, 3 months; P = 0.42, respectively), and higher ratios from 6 to 12 months than before October 2014 (6 months; P = 0.93, 9 months; P = 0.52, 12 months; P = 0.80, respectively). Relative doses per initial desmopressin ODT at 9 and 12 months were significantly higher in patients switching after November 2014 than in patients switching before October 2014 (9 months; P = 0.02, 12 months; P = 0.04, respectively). Moreover, logistic regression analysis revealed that the incidence of hyponatremia was dependent on the ratio of nasal to oral desmopressin dose (P = 0.02). In addition, in four out of six patients who had serum sodium level reduced below 130 mEq/L, hyponatremia occurred within 1 month after the switch. Conclusions: A more gradual dose titration after the safety reports was performed, which involved the long-term safety of desmopressin ODT use. Vigilance of hyponatremia in early phase of desmopressin ODT use should be noted

Cosmic shear statistics in the Suprime-Cam 2.1 sq deg field: Constraints on Omega_m and sigma_8

We present measurements of the cosmic shear correlation in the shapes of galaxies in the Suprime-Cam 2.1 deg^2 R_c-band imaging data. As an estimator of the shear correlation originated from the gravitational lensing, we adopt the aperture mass variance. We detect a non-zero E mode variance on scales between 2 and 40arcmin. We also detect a small but non-zero B mode variance on scales larger than 5arcmin. We compare the measured E mode variance to the model predictions in CDM cosmologies using maximum likelihood analysis. A four-dimensional space is explored, which examines sigma_8, Omega_m, Gamma and zs (a mean redshift of galaxies). We include three possible sources of error: statistical noise, the cosmic variance estimated using numerical experiments, and a residual systematic effect estimated from the B mode variance. We derive joint constraints on two parameters by marginalizing over the two remaining parameters. We obtain an upper limit of Gamma0.9 (68% confidence). For a prior Gamma\in[0.1,0.4] and zs\in[0.6,1.4], we find sigma_8=(0.50_{-0.16}^{+0.35})Omega_m^{-0.37} for flat cosmologies and sigma_8=(0.51_{-0.16}^{+0.29})Omega_m^{-0.34}$ for open cosmologies (95% confidence). If we take the currently popular LCDM model, we obtain a one-dimensional confidence interval on sigma_8 for the 95.4% level, 0.62<\sigma_8<1.32 for zs\in[0.6,1.4]. Information on the redshift distribution of galaxies is key to obtaining a correct cosmological constraint. An independent constraint on Gamma from other observations is useful to tighten the constraint.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

An analysis of intestinal morphology and incretin-producing cells using tissue optical clearing and 3-D imaging

Tissue optical clearing permits detailed evaluation of organ three-dimensional (3-D) structure as well as that of individual cells by tissue staining and autofluorescence. In this study, we evaluated intestinal morphology, intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), and enteroendocrine cells, such as incretin-producing cells, in reporter mice by intestinal 3-D imaging. 3-D intestinal imaging of reporter mice using optical tissue clearing enabled us to evaluate both detailed intestinal morphologies and cell numbers, villus length and crypt depth in the same samples. In disease mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-injected mice, the results of 3-D imaging using tissue optical clearing in this study was consistent with those of 2-D imaging in previous reports and could added the new data of intestinal morphology. In analysis of incretin-producing cells of reporter mice, we could elucidate the number, the percentage, and the localization of incretin-producing cells in intestine and the difference of those between L cells and K cells. Thus, we established a novel method of intestinal analysis using tissue optical clearing and 3-D imaging. 3-D evaluation of intestine enabled us to clarify not only detailed intestinal morphology but also the precise number and localization of IECs and incretin-producing cells in the same samples

    Magnetization process for a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet

We investigate the magnetization process for a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet with bond alternation. By combining the density matrix renormalization group method with the interchain mean-field theory, we discuss how the interchain coupling affects the magnetization curve. It is found that the width of the magnetization plateau is considerably reduced upon introducing the interchain coupling. We obtain the phase diagram in a magnetic field. The effect of single-ion anisotropy is also addressed.Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps figure

Searching for dark matter halos in the Suprime-Cam 2 sq deg field

We report the first result of weak gravitational lensing survey on a 2.1 sq deg Rc-band image taken with a wide field camera (Suprime-Cam) on the prime focus of 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. The weak lensing mass reconstruction is applied to the data to search for dark matter halos of cluster scale; M >= 10^14 solar mass. The reconstructed convergence field is divided by 1-sigma noise to obtain the signal-to-noise ratio map (S/N-map) of the detection. Local maxima and minima are searched on the S/N-map and the probability distribution function (PDF) of the peaks are created to compare with model predictions. We found excess over noise PDF created from the randomized realization on both positive and negative sides. Negative peaks imply the presence of voids in the dark matter distribution and this is the first report of the detection. Positive peaks, on the other hand, represent the dark matter halos and the number count of the halos on the 2.1 sq deg image is 4.9 +- 2.3 for S/N > 5 where the Gaussian smoothing radius of the convergence map is 1'. The result is consistent with the prediction assuming the Press-Schechter mass function and the NFW halo profile under the cluster normalized CDM cosmology. Although the present statistics is not enough due to the limited field of view, this work demonstrates that dark matter halo count via weak lensing is a promising way to test the paradigm of structure formation and cosmological model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The purpose of this study was to estimate oxygen consumption and to measure race pace during actual triathlon race. The subjects were 3 triathletes who participated in Anjou triathlon race (swimming 1.3km, bicycling 65.1km, running 14km). Heart rates were recorded with a portable heart rate recorder during the race, and race pace was also recorded at each section. After one month from the race, oxygen uptake and heart rate at three type of exercises were measured in laboratory for estimating the physiological intensity of race. These data were utilized to estimate the average %Vo_2 max at each section during the race. The results were as follows. In this 80.4km triathlon race, average %Vo_2 max and average heart rate were obtaind in two subjects, one indicated 65%Vo_2max and 153 beats/min, and the other indicated 89% Vo_2 max and 170 beats/min, respectively. From these data it is suggested that the shorter the distance is, the higher the %Vo_2 max is
