Spin-dynamic field coupling in strongly THz driven semiconductors : local inversion symmetry breaking
We study theoretically the optics in undoped direct gap semiconductors which
are strongly driven in the THz regime. We calculate the optical sideband
generation due to nonlinear mixing of the THz field and the near infrared
probe. Starting with an inversion symmetric microscopic Hamiltonian we include
the THz field nonperturbatively using non-equilibrium Green function
techniques. We find that a self induced relativistic spin-THz field coupling
locally breaks the inversion symmetry, resulting in the formation of odd
sidebands which otherwise are absent.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
First Principles Study of Zn-Sb Thermoelectrics
We report first principles LDA calculations of the electronic structure and
thermoelectric properties of -ZnSb. The material is found
to be a low carrier density metal with a complex Fermi surface topology and
non-trivial dependence of Hall concentration on band filling. The band
structure is rather covalent, consistent with experimental observations of good
carrier mobility. Calculations of the variation with band filling are used to
extract the doping level (band filling) from the experimental Hall number. At
this band filling, which actually corresponds to 0.1 electrons per 22 atom unit
cell, the calculated thermopower and its temperature dependence are in good
agreement with experiment. The high Seebeck coefficient in a metallic material
is remarkable, and arises in part from the strong energy dependence of the
Fermiology near the experimental band filling. Improved thermoelectric
performance is predicted for lower doping levels which corresponds to higher Zn
concentrations.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
A Study of the B-V Colour Temperature Relation
We attempt to construct a B-V colour temperature relation for stars in the
least model dependent way employing the best modern data. The fit we obtained
with the form Teff = Teff((B-V)0,[Fe/H],log g) is well constrained and a number
of tests show the consistency of the procedures for the fit. Our relation
covers from F0 to K5 stars with metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.5 to +0.3 for both
dwarfs and giants. The residual of the fit is 66 K, which is consistent with
what are expected from the quality of the present data. Metallicity and surface
gravity effects are well separated from the colour dependence. Dwarfs and
giants match well in a single family of fit, differing only in log g. The fit
also detects the Galactic extinction correction for nearby stars with the
amount E(B-V) = 0.26 +/-0.03 mag/kpc. Taking the newly obtained relation as a
reference we examine a number of B-V colour temperature relations and
atmosphere models available in the literature. We show the presence of a
systematic error in the colour temperature relation from synthetic calculations
of model atmospheres; the systematic error across K0 to K5 dwarfs is 0.04-0.05
mag in B-V, which means 0.25-0.3 mag in Mv for the K star range. We also argue
for the error in the temperature scale used in currently popular stellar
population synthesis models; synthetic colours from these models are somewhat
too blue for aged elliptical galaxies. We derive the colour index of the sun
(B-V)sun = 0.627 +/-0.018, and discuss that redder colours (e.g., 0.66-0.67)
often quoted in the literature are incompatible with the colour-temperature
relation.Comment: AASLaTeX (aaspp4.sty),36 pages (13 figures included), submitted to

A double-lined spectroscopic orbit for the young star HD 34700
We report high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the young star HD
34700, which confirm it to be a double-lined spectroscopic binary. We derive an
accurate orbital solution with a period of 23.4877 +/- 0.0013 days and an
eccentricity of e = 0.2501 +/- 0.0068. The stars are found to be of similar
mass (M2/M1 = 0.987 +/- 0.014) and luminosity. We derive also the effective
temperatures (5900 K and 5800 K) and projected rotational velocities (28 km/s
and 22 km/s) of the components. These values of v sin i are much higher than
expected for main-sequence stars of similar spectral type (G0), and are not due
to tidal synchronization. We discuss also the indicators of youth available for
the object. Although there is considerable evidence that the system is young
--strong infrared excess, X-ray emission, Li I 6708 absorption (0.17 Angstroms
equivalent width), H alpha emission (0.6 Angstroms), rapid rotation-- the
precise age cannot yet be established because the distance is unknown.Comment: 17 pages, including 2 figures and 2 tables. Accepted for publication

The Machine Learning Landscape of Top Taggers
Based on the established task of identifying boosted, hadronically decaying
top quarks, we compare a wide range of modern machine learning approaches.
Unlike most established methods they rely on low-level input, for instance
calorimeter output. While their network architectures are vastly different,
their performance is comparatively similar. In general, we find that these new
approaches are extremely powerful and great fun.Comment: Yet another tagger included
Quantum Gravitational Corrections to the Real Klein-Gordon Field in the Presence of a Minimal Length
The (D+1)-dimensional -two-parameter Lorentz-covariant
deformed algebra introduced by Quesne and Tkachuk [C. Quesne and V. M. Tkachuk,
J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. \textbf {39}, 10909 (2006).], leads to a nonzero minimal
uncertainty in position (minimal length). The Klein-Gordon equation in a
(3+1)-dimensional space-time described by Quesne-Tkachuk Lorentz-covariant
deformed algebra is studied in the case where up to first order
over deformation parameter . It is shown that the modified Klein-Gordon
equation which contains fourth-order derivative of the wave function describes
two massive particles with different masses. We have shown that physically
acceptable mass states can only exist for which
leads to an isotropic minimal length in the interval . Finally, we have shown that the above estimation of
minimal length is in good agreement with the results obtained in previous
investigations.Comment: 10 pages, no figur
Exact boundary conditions in numerical relativity using multiple grids: scalar field tests
Cauchy-Characteristic Matching (CCM), the combination of a central 3+1 Cauchy
code with an exterior characteristic code connected across a time-like
interface, is a promising technique for the generation and extraction of
gravitational waves. While it provides a tool for the exact specification of
boundary conditions for the Cauchy evolution, it also allows to follow
gravitational radiation all the way to infinity, where it is unambiguously
defined.
We present a new fourth order accurate finite difference CCM scheme for a
first order reduction of the wave equation around a Schwarzschild black hole in
axisymmetry. The matching at the interface between the Cauchy and the
characteristic regions is done by transfering appropriate characteristic/null
variables. Numerical experiments indicate that the algorithm is fourth order
convergent. As an application we reproduce the expected late-time tail decay
for the scalar field.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. Included changes suggested by referee
Improved Color-Temperature Relations and Bolometric Corrections for Cool Stars
We present new grids of colors and bolometric corrections for F-K stars
having 4000 K < Teff < 6500 K, 0.0 < log g < 4.5 and -3.0 < [Fe/H] < 0.0. A
companion paper extends these calculations into the M giant regime. Colors are
tabulated for Johnson U-V and B-V; Cousins V-R and V-I; Johnson-Glass V-K, J-K
and H-K; and CIT/CTIO V-K, J-K, H-K and CO. We have developed these
color-temperature (CT) relations by convolving synthetic spectra with
photometric filter-transmission-profiles. The synthetic spectra have been
computed with the SSG spectral synthesis code using MARCS stellar atmosphere
models as input. Both of these codes have been improved substantially,
especially at low temperatures, through the incorporation of new opacity data.
The resulting synthetic colors have been put onto the observational systems by
applying color calibrations derived from models and photometry of field stars
which have Teffs determined by the infrared-flux method. The color calibrations
have zero points and slopes which change most of the original synthetic colors
by less than 0.02 mag and 5%, respectively. The adopted Teff scale (Bell &
Gustafsson 1989) is confirmed by the extraordinary agreement between the
predicted and observed angular diameters of the field stars. We have also
derived empirical CT relations from the field-star photometry. Except for the
coolest dwarfs (Teff < 5000 K), our calibrated, solar-metallicity model colors
are found to match these and other empirical relations quite well. Our
calibrated, 4 Gyr, solar-metallicity isochrone also provides a good match to
color-magnitude diagrams of M67. We regard this as evidence that our calibrated
colors can be applied to many astrophysical problems, including modelling the
integrated light of galaxies. (abridged)Comment: To appear in the March 2000 issue of the Astronomical Journal. 72

SoundCloud and Bandcamp as alternative music platforms
We examine two âproducer-orientedâ audio distribution platforms, SoundCloud and Bandcamp, that have been important repositories for the hopes of musicians, commentators and audiences that digital technologies and cultural platforms might promote democratisation of the cultural industries, and we compare their achievements and limitations in this respect. We show that the emancipatory elements enshrined in SoundCloudâs âbottom-upâ abundance are compromised by two elements that underpin the platform: the problematic âculture of connectivityâ of the social media systems to which it must remain integrally linked, and the systems of intellectual property that the firm has been increasingly compelled to enforce. By contrast, it seems that Bandcamp has been relatively stable in financial terms while being at odds with some key aspects of âplatformizationâ, and we explore the possibility that some of the platformâs apparent success may derive from how its key features makes it attractive to indie musicians and fans drawn to an independent ethos. Nevertheless, we argue, even while in some respects Bandcamp acts more effectively as an âalternativeâ than does SoundCloud, the former is also congruent economically and discursively with how platforms capitalise on the activity of self-managing, self-auditing, specialist, worker-users
