    Health Insurance Literacy Impacts on Enrollment and Satisfaction with Health Insurance

    Health insurance literacy (HIL) contributes to the lack of understanding basic health insurance (HI) terms, subsidies eligibility, health plan selection, and HI usage. The study is one of few to address the existing gap in the literature regarding the exploration of the relationship between HIL, individuals\u27 HI enrollment, and individuals\u27 satisfaction with their HI. The theoretical framework selected for this study was the prospect theory, which describes the behavior of individuals who make decisions. In this cross-sectional correlational study, secondary data set from the third Quarter 2015 Health Reform Monitoring Survey was used. Binary logistic regression models were used to test hypotheses of four predictive relationships between (a) HI enrollment and HIL with HI terms; (b) marketplace enrollment and HIL with HI terms; (c) satisfaction with HI and HIL with HI access to care; and (d) satisfaction with HI and HIL with HI cost of care. Results indicated that participants with high HIL with HI terms had 4.2 times higher odds that those with low HIL to be enrolled in HI and 81% higher odds than those with low HIL to be enrolled in marketplace HI. The most significant relationship indicated that participants with high HIL with HI activities had 12.8 times higher odds than those with low HIL to have high satisfaction with access to care and 8.8 times higher odds than those with low HIL participants to have high satisfaction with cost of care. The finding that low HIL is associated with lower enrollment and lower satisfaction with HI has implications for social change. Policymakers may have the opportunity to utilize this study to promote policies that promote higher HIL, which may lead to increased HI enrollment and improved satisfaction with HI selection

    The Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) is integral part of the CMS experiment, especially, for heavy ion studies. The design of the ZDC includes two independent calorimeter sections: an electromagnetic section and a hadronic section. Sampling calorimeters using tungsten and quartz fibers have been chosen for the energy measurements. An overview of the ZDC is presented along with a current status of calorimeter's preparation for Day 1 of LHC

    Measurement of the Rate Capability of Resistive Plate Chambers

    This paper reports on detailed measurements of the performance of Resistive Plate Chambers in a proton beam with variable intensity. Short term effects, such as dead time, are studied using consecutive events. On larger time scales, for various beam intensities the chamber.s efficiency is studied as a function of time within a spill of particles. The correlation between the efficiency of chambers placed in the same beam provides an indication of the lateral size of the observed effects. The measurements are compared to the predictions of a simple model based on the assumption that the resistive plates behave as pure resistors

    Recruitment and Retention Strategies for Minority or Poor Clinical Research Participants: Lessons From the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span Study

    PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Investigating health disparities requires studies designed to recruit and retain racially and socioeconomically diverse cohorts. It is critical to address the barriers that disproportionately affect participation in clinical research by minorities and the socioeconomically disadvantaged. This study sought to identify and rectify these barriers to recruit and retain a biracial (African American and non-Hispanic White) and socioeconomically diverse cohort for a longitudinal study. DESIGN AND METHOD: The Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity across the Life Span study is a 20-year longitudinal examination of how race and socioeconomic status influence the development of age-related health disparities. One goal was to create a multifactorial recruitment and retention strategy. The recruitment paradigm targeted known barriers and identified those unique to the study's urban environment. The retention paradigm mirrored the recruitment plan but was based on specifically developed approaches. RESULTS: This cohort recruitment required attention to developing community partnerships, designing the research study to meet the study hypotheses and to provide benefit to participants, providing a safe community-based site for the research and creating didactics to develop staff cultural proficiency. These efforts facilitated study implementation and enhanced recruitment resulting in accrual of a biracial and socioeconomically diverse cohort of 3,722 participants. IMPLICATIONS: Recruiting and retaining minority or poor research participants is challenging but possible. The essential facets include clear communication of the research hypothesis, focus on providing a direct benefit for participants, and selection of a hypothesis that is directly relevant to the community studied.http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/geront/gnr02

Two identical combined calorimeters are located in the LHC tunnel at CERN at the straight section 140 m on each side of the CMS interaction vertex and between the two beam pipes. They will detect very forward photons and neutrons. ZDC information can be used for a variety of physics measurements as well as improving the collision centrality determination in heavy-ion collisions.     Critical temperature for the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition (from multifragmentation and fission)

    Critical temperature Tc for the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is stimated both from the multifragmentation and fission data. In the first case,the critical temperature is obtained by analysis of the IMF yields in p(8.1 GeV)+Au collisions within the statistical model of multifragmentation (SMM). In the second case, the experimental fission probability for excited 188Os is compared with the calculated one with Tc as a free parameter. It is concluded for both cases that the critical temperature is higher than 16 MeV.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

    Tests of a Digital Hadron Calorimeter

    In the context of developing a hadron calorimeter with extremely fine granularity for the application of Particle Flow Algorithms to the measurement of jet energies at a future lepton collider, we report on extensive tests of a small scale prototype calorimeter. The calorimeter contained up to 10 layers of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with 2560 1 \times 1 cm2 readout pads, interleaved with steel absorber plates. The tests included both long-term Cosmic Ray data taking and measurements in particle beams, where the response to broadband muons and to pions and positrons with energies in the range of 1 - 16 GeV was established. Detailed measurements of the chambers efficiency as function of beam intensity have also been performed using 120 GeV protons at varying intensity. The data are compared to simulations based on GEANT4 and to analytical calculations of the rate limitations
