Different substituted diesters of thiazolopyrimidine were prepared by the treatment of 3,4 dihydropyrimidine2-thione with á-haloesters using ethanol under reflux condition affording 71–85% yield. IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and elemental analyses were used for the characterization of these compounds. The crystal and molecular structure of one of the product, 5-phenyl-3,7-dimethyl-5H- hiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine-2,6- dicarboxylic acid diethyl ester (3e) was verified by single crystal X-ray diffraction method. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated against four bacterial strains and one fungal species. Few of the derivatives exhibited antibacterial and antifungal activities

Gel polymer electrolytes consisting of PVA–EC–PC–KI have been studied in this work. The highest room temperature (298 K) conductivity of 12.92 mS cm −1 is obtained for PVA-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with composition 14.5 PVA-21.7 EC-28.7 PC-30.4 KI-4.7  I 2 (in wt%). The high conductivity is due to the highest number density of mobile ions in the electrolyte. The conductivity–temperature dependence follows the Vogel–Tamman–Fulcher (VTF) relationship. The trend of pseudoactivation energy (Ea) with salt concentration is contrary to that of conductivity. PVA-based GPEs with 5 to 35 wt% KI were used as a medium in ruthenium 535 (N719) dye-sensitized solar cells. The efficiency ( η ) of the solar cells increased as the composition of KI salt in the electrolyte increased. The highest power conversion efficiency of 2.74 % is obtained for solar cells fabricated with electrolyte containing 35 wt% KI. The variation of efficiency follows the same trend as short circuit current density (Jsc) . The increase in Jsc is influenced by the increase in iodide ion concentration in the electrolyte that assists the redox process and helps electron to shuttle between ionized dye and counter electrode

Combined shear/compression structural testing of asymmetric sandwich structures

    Get PDF
Asymmetric sandwich technology can be applied in the design of lightweight, non-pressurized aeronautical structures such as those of helicopters. A test rig of asymmetric sandwich structures subjected to compression/shear loads was designed, validated, and set up. It conforms to the standard certification procedure for composite aeronautical structures set out in the “test pyramid”, a multiscale approach. The static tests until failure showed asymmetric sandwich structures to be extremely resistant, which, in the case of the tested specimen shape, were characterized by the absence of buckling and failure compressive strains up to 10,000 ÎŒ strains. Specimens impacted with perforation damage were also tested, enabling the original phenomenon of crack propagation to be observed step-by-step. The results of the completed tests thus enable the concept to be validated, and justify the possibility of creating a much larger machine to overcome the drawbacks linked to the use of small specimens

This study proves the addition of quantum wells to the intrinsic regions of p-i-n GaInNAs/GaAs has improved the performance of optoelectronic devices. The optoelectronic properties that contribute to the device's dark current and photocurrent need to be well understood to develop photo-response at longer wavelengths. This study reports an optoelectronic properties comparison of different quantum well number for Ga0.952In0.048N0.016As0.984/GaAs-based dilute nitride multi-quantum wells (MQWs) p-i-n photodetector devices. From photoluminescence (PL) analysis, 20 MQWs shows a higher PL peak than 10 MQWs. The maximum quantum efficiency (QE) is found to be 80.3% for 20 MQWs and 46% for 10 MQWs, where 20 MQWs being the highest QE value ever reported for GaInNAs-based MQWs photodetector. Current versus voltage (I–V) measurement shows that 20 MQWs produces lower dark current than 10 MQWs. Besides, 20 QWs sample produces a higher current density (−12.43 ÎŒAcm−2) than 10 MQWs (−7.52 ÎŒAcm−2) under illumination. Impedance spectroscopy analysis shows that a lower dark current of 20 MQWs is due to a high intrinsic resistivity and low dielectric loss peak compared to 10 MQWs. SimWindows simulation shows good correlation with responsivity analysis and impedance analysis where at −5 V, 20 MQWs produces higher responsivity (0.65AW-1) due to wider depletion region (deduce from conduction band profile) and lower intrinsic capacitance and dielectric loss (deduces from impedance analysis) than 10 MQWs (0.37AW-1). At room temperature, the detectivity (D*) of the 20 MQWs photodetector (7.12 × 1010 cmHz0.5W−1) is higher than 10 MQWS photodetector (4.89 × 1010 cmHz0.5W−1). Finally, the 20 MQWs's (4.02 × 10−11 WHz−0.5) has produces lower noise-equivalent power (NEP) than 10 MQWs (5.85 × 10−11 WHz−0.5). This study has successfully presenting an understanding of optoelectronic properties and simultaneously producing a sensitive photodetector with high quality, low-noise which is comparable with ∌1010 cmHz0.5W−1 of commercial III-V alloy based near-infrared GaAs-based photodetectors

Sequencing batch reactor technology for landfill leachate treatment : a state-of-the-art review

    Get PDF
Landfill has become an underlying source of surface and groundwater pollution if not efficiently managed, due to the risk of leachate infiltration into to land and aquifers. The generated leachate is considered a serious environmental threat for the public health, because of the toxic and recalcitrant nature of its constituents. Thus, it must be collected and appropriately treated before being discharged into the environment. At present, there is no single unit process available for proper leachate treatment as conventional wastewater treatment processes cannot achieve a satisfactory level for degrading toxic substances present. Therefore, there is a growing interest in examination of different leachate treatment processes for maximum operational flexibility. Based on leachate characteristics, discharge requirements, technical possibilities, regulatory requirements and financial considerations, several techniques have been applied for its degradation, presenting varying degrees of efficiency. Therefore, this article presents a comprehensive review of existing research articles on the pros and cons of various leachate degradation methods. In line with environmental sustainability, the article stressed on the application and efficiency of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system treating landfill leachate due to its operational flexibility, resistance to shock loads and high biomass retention. Contributions of integrated leachate treatment technologies with SBR were also discussed. The article further analyzed the effect of different adopted materials, processes, strategies and configurations on leachate treatment. Environmental and operational parameters that affect SBR system were critically discussed. It is believed that information contained in this review will increase readers fundamental knowledge, guide future researchers and be incorporated into future works on experimentally-based SBR studies for leachate treatment

Development of a core descriptor set for Crohn's anal fistula

    Get PDF
AIM: Crohn's anal fistula (CAF) is a complex condition, with no agreement on which patient characteristics should be routinely reported in studies. The aim of this study was to develop a core descriptor set of key patient characteristics for reporting in all CAF research. METHOD: Candidate descriptors were generated from published literature and stakeholder suggestions. Colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists and specialist nurses in inflammatory bowel disease took part in three rounds of an international modified Delphi process using nine-point Likert scales to rank the importance of descriptors. Feedback was provided between rounds to allow refinement of the next ratings. Patterns in descriptor voting were assessed using principal component analysis (PCA). Resulting PCA groups were used to organize items in rounds two and three. Consensus descriptors were submitted to a patient panel for feedback. Items meeting predetermined thresholds were included in the final set and ratified at the consensus meeting. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty three respondents from 22 countries completed round one, of whom 67.0% completed round three. Ninety seven descriptors were rated across three rounds in 11 PCA-based groups. Forty descriptors were shortlisted. The consensus meeting ratified a core descriptor set of 37 descriptors within six domains: fistula anatomy, current disease activity and phenotype, risk factors, medical interventions for CAF, surgical interventions for CAF, and patient symptoms and impact on quality of life. CONCLUSION: The core descriptor set proposed for all future CAF research reflects characteristics important to gastroenterologists and surgeons. This might aid transparent reporting in future studies

The global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors, 2010–19: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Understanding the magnitude of cancer burden attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors is crucial for development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies. We analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to inform cancer control planning efforts globally. METHODS: The GBD 2019 comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate cancer burden attributable to behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risk factors. A total of 82 risk–outcome pairs were included on the basis of the World Cancer Research Fund criteria. Estimated cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 and change in these measures between 2010 and 2019 are presented. FINDINGS: Globally, in 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4·45 million (95% uncertainty interval 4·01–4·94) deaths and 105 million (95·0–116) DALYs for both sexes combined, representing 44·4% (41·3–48·4) of all cancer deaths and 42·0% (39·1–45·6) of all DALYs. There were 2·88 million (2·60–3·18) risk-attributable cancer deaths in males (50·6% [47·8–54·1] of all male cancer deaths) and 1·58 million (1·36–1·84) risk-attributable cancer deaths in females (36·3% [32·5–41·3] of all female cancer deaths). The leading risk factors at the most detailed level globally for risk-attributable cancer deaths and DALYs in 2019 for both sexes combined were smoking, followed by alcohol use and high BMI. Risk-attributable cancer burden varied by world region and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), with smoking, unsafe sex, and alcohol use being the three leading risk factors for risk-attributable cancer DALYs in low SDI locations in 2019, whereas DALYs in high SDI locations mirrored the top three global risk factor rankings. From 2010 to 2019, global risk-attributable cancer deaths increased by 20·4% (12·6–28·4) and DALYs by 16·8% (8·8–25·0), with the greatest percentage increase in metabolic risks (34·7% [27·9–42·8] and 33·3% [25·8–42·0]). INTERPRETATION: The leading risk factors contributing to global cancer burden in 2019 were behavioural, whereas metabolic risk factors saw the largest increases between 2010 and 2019. Reducing exposure to these modifiable risk factors would decrease cancer mortality and DALY rates worldwide, and policies should be tailored appropriately to local cancer risk factor burden
