Suppression of two-bounce windows in kink-antikink collisions

We consider a class of topological defects in (1,1)(1,1)-dimensions with a deformed ϕ4\phi^4 kink structure whose stability analysis leads to a Schr\"odinger-like equation with a zero-mode and at least one vibrational (shape) mode. We are interested in the dynamics of kink-antikink collisions, focusing on the structure of two-bounce windows. For small deformation and for one or two vibrational modes, the observed two-bounce windows are explained by the standard mechanism of a resonant effect between the first vibrational and the translational modes. With the increasing of the deformation, the effect of the appearance of more than one vibrational mode is the gradual disappearance of the initial two-bounce windows. The total suppression of two-bounce windows even with the presence of a vibrational mode offers a counterexample from what expected from the standard mechanism. For even larger deformation, some two-bounce windows reappear, but with a non-standard structure.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

The AI Family: The Information Security Managers Best Frenemy?

    Get PDF
In this exploratory study, we deliberately pull apart the Artificial from the Intelligence, the material from the human. We first assessed the existing technological controls available to Information Security Managers (ISMs) to ensure their in-depth defense strategies. Based on the AI watch taxonomy, we then discuss each of the 15 technologies and their potential impact on the transformation of jobs in the field of security (i.e., AI trainers, AI explainers and AI sustainers). Additionally, in a pilot study we collect the evaluation and the narratives of the employees (n=6) of a small financial institution in a focus group session. We particularly focus on their perception of the role of AI systems in the future of cyber security

Multishot Codes for Network Coding: Bounds and a Multilevel Construction

The subspace channel was introduced by Koetter and Kschischang as an adequate model for the communication channel from the source node to a sink node of a multicast network that performs random linear network coding. So far, attention has been given to one-shot subspace codes, that is, codes that use the subspace channel only once. In contrast, this paper explores the idea of using the subspace channel more than once and investigates the so called multishot subspace codes. We present definitions for the problem, a motivating example, lower and upper bounds for the size of codes, and a multilevel construction of codes based on block-coded modulation.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ISIT 200

The impact of cyberattacks on small states

    Get PDF
The “Impact” series has often emphasized the importance of size and volume to survive in software and IT. But what if the size of your country is small and you face the same cyberthreats as much larger countries in the world? That is the case with small states that face the same cyberattacks while often having less means to defend themselves. You cannot grow a small state into a large state just to be able to defend yourself better against cyberattacks. What you can do is explained in this column.—Les Hatton and Michiel van Genuchte

Genetic diversity of Paenibacillus polymyxa populations isolated from the rhizosphere of four cultivars of maize (Zea mays) planted in cerrado soil.

A tropical Brazilian soil (Cerrado) was planted with four cultivars of maize (CMS04, CMS11, CMS22 and CMS36) and the genetic diversity of the Paenibacillus polymyxa populations present in their rhizospheres was determined after 90 days of sowing. For that, a total of 67 isolates were identified as R polymyxa by classical biochemical tests and were analyzed for DNA polymorphism with the randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplification of repetitive DNA sequences (rep) methods. The amplification patterns obtained using three arbitrary primers and the primer BOXA1R were used separately to construct dendrograms based on the unweighted pair groups method with arithmetic means (UPGMA). Fifty-four genotypic groups were formed when data from different PCR amplification were combined, showing a high level of genetic polymorphism among P. polymyxa strains. A dendrogram based also on combined PCR data, followed by cluster analysis with minimum-variance criteria (Ward) and Euclidean distance, showed that P. polymyxa strains could be divided into two main clusters. One cluster was formed predominantly by strains from maize cultivars CMS04 and CMS36, while the other cluster was formed predominantly by strains of maize cultivars CMS11 and CMS22. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) allowed the correlation between the genetic structure of P. polymyxa populations and the different cultivars of maize to be studied. The results showed that the strains isolated from the rhizospheres of the different maize cultivars were significantly different. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B. V. Alls rights reserved

ELMB Microcontroller Firmware and SCADA Integration for the LHCb Muon Detector Readout Control System

    Get PDF
The LHCb system requires high efficiency muon detection into LHC bunch crossing: 95% into a 25 ns time window. To reach such efficiency many parameters of the detector readout apparatus have to be calibrated and adjusted and its channels must be aligned in time. In addition, essential characteristics must be monitored to guarantee a good working condition of the apparatus (to avoid loss of efficiency and to minimize systematic errors). As the number of the muon readout parameters is extremely high (∼700000 registers), a system able to process information in parallel is required: 122000 readout channels will be controlled by about 600 microcontrollers and 6 computers. The complexity of such an apparatus requires the use of a distributed system. For this a Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) based system is being developed to control the entire detector readout equipment. Moreover, a Finite State Machine (FSM) implementation is being developed to integrate the Detector Readout Control (DRC) into the LHC Experiment Control System (ECS)
