Coordination cost and the distance puzzle

Since 1960, transport costs have been falling, but international exchange did not become less sensitive to distance. We propose the following explanation for this puzzle: in a Dixit-Stiglitz framework, a decrease in transport cost favors trade, which may increase the international specialization (i.e. the number of varieties of intermediate goods used in production). An increased international specialization increases the need for coordination, and makes relatively more important for downstream firms to be close to their suppliers. Els quiròpters del Parc Natural de S'Albufera de Mallorca

Una campanya de camp de dia 19 a dia 26 de Maig de 1992 ha permés la formació del primer catàleg de quiròpters del Parc Natural de S'Albufera. Aquesta fauna està integrada per nou espècies (Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis capaccinii, M. nattereri, M. myotis, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. kuhli, Miniopterus schreibersi, Tanarida teniotis i Barbastella barbastellus). Aquesta darrera espècie, nova per a les Balears, ha estat capturada en sis ocasions durant la campanya; dues de les captures són de femelles en gestació. Tots els exemplars foren alliberats. Es considera probable la presència de Hypsugo sa vii, Plecotus austriacus i Eptesicus serotinus. Hi ha indicis de presència de Nyctalus leisleri. EI Parc Natural de S'Albufera és una localitat important per aquest grup en el context insularA field study undertaken between 19 and 26 May 1992 produced the first list of bats for the Park of S'Albufera. The list comprised nine species (Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis capaccinii, M. nattereri, M. myotis, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P.kuhli, Miniopterus schreibersi, Tanarida teniotis and Barbastella barbastellus). The last named species, new for tile Balearics, was captured in six occasions during the study; two of them involved pregnant females. All bats taken were released again after capture. Other species probably present are Hypsugo sa vii, Plecotus austriacus i Eptesicus serotinus . There were indications that Nyctalus leisleri was also present. S'Albufera Natural Park is an important locality in the Island context for this group

QUANTIFYING THE HETEROGENEITY OF ABATEMENT COSTS UNDER CLIMATIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION CHANGES: AN INTEGRATED MODELLING APPROACH

We present here preliminary results of an integrated modelling approach combining a crop model (STICS) and an economic model (AROPAj) of European agricultural supply. This modelling framework is designed to perform quantitative analysis, regarding climate change impacts on agriculture and more generally the interactions between soils, land use, agriculture and climate integrating physical and economical elements (data, process, models). It explicitly integrates an agricultural diversity dimension with regards to economic set of choices and soil climate spatial variability. First results are given in term of quantitative analysis combining optimal land allocation (economic optimality) and “dose-response” functions related to a large set of crops in Europe, at the farm group level, covering part of the European Union (EU15). La mobilisation du mythe du journaliste-reporter sur le web, nouvel Eldorado participatif ?

Selon un cliché assez largement répandu, tant dans l'opinion qu'au sein du champ journalistique lui-même, la profession de journaliste serait en crise. Une crise liée notamment à une perte de crédibilité, comme en atteste chaque année le baromètre La Croix—TNS Sofres qui met en lumière le déficit de confiance des Français à l'égard de leurs médias. Depuis quelques années, les critiques acerbes à l'égard des pratiques journalistiques et de leurs dérives ont trouvé un écho et une concrétisation sur le web, via un modèle alternatif, fondé sur une participation accrue voire exclusive des « amateurs » (expériences qualifiées de « journalisme citoyen », de « journalisme amateur » ou encore de « média communautaire »). Cet impératif participatif s'est progressivement imposé aux sites de médias d'information traditionnels qui ont, dans un premier temps, accueilli les contributions amateurs (que ce soit sous forme de chats, de blogs, de commentaires...), majoritairement centrées sur l'expression d'opinions. Toutefois, un relatif désenchantement semble prévaloir aujourd'hui au sein des rédactions de ces sites au vu des résultats obtenus. A tel point qu'une incitation à un nouvel élan participatif parait désormais voir le jour, notamment à travers la mobilisation de certaines références et représentations journalistiques. Plus précisément, nous formulons l'hypothèse que cette mobilisation s'incarne ici dans la figure mythique et idéalisée du reporter qui renvoie à une pratique authentique, noble et éminemment positive (si ce n'est positiviste) du journalisme, et à une valorisation des faits, du terrain et du témoignage (notamment photo ou vidéo). Nous souhaitons donc mettre en évidence comment cette régénérescence du mythe du reporter et les représentations qui lui sont liées deviennent un outil d'encadrement du participatif ainsi qu'un argument de communication et de légitimation pour les sites des médias d'information

Frequency and phase locking of laser cavity solitons

Self-localized states or dissipative solitons have the freedom of translation in systems with a homogeneous background. When compared to cavity solitons in coherently driven nonlinear optical systems, laser cavity solitons have the additional freedom of the optical phase. We explore the consequences of this additional Goldstone mode and analyse experimentally and numerically frequency and phase locking of laser cavity solitons in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with frequency-selective feedback. Due to growth-related variations of the cavity resonance, the translational symmetry is usually broken in real devices. Pinning to different defects means that separate laser cavity solitons have different frequencies and are mutually incoherent. If two solitons are close to each other, however, their interaction leads to synchronization due to phase and frequency locking with strong similarities to the Adler-scenario of coupled oscillators

The dimensionality of self-rated employee performance : an integrated view

This study addresses the debate in the literature regarding the dimensionality of the job performance construct. The sample comprised 647 public servants from a state-based law enforcement organisation. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses delineate a four:factor structure, consisting of in-role behaviour, organisational citizenship behaviour directed towards (1) individuals or (2) the organisation, and a distinct latent variable deemed counter-productive work behaviour (CWB). The pattern of correlations among the four performance dimensions and between the performance dimensions and attitudes support the construct and discriminant validity of the four performance dimensions. Further, the .findings propose that CWB is a core, not discretionary, dimension of performance.<br /
