    A Working Ideology for Graphic Design

    This exhibition represents an experimental body of work completed for the Caine College of the Arts. It explores the interplay of explicit and implicit functions within semiotics, while simultaneously communicating the college’s messages and honestly representing my own aesthetic ideals. Through the treatment of these explorations I hope to create an aesthetic experience for the viewer. That stems from my own ideology – which consists of a myriad of conscious and subconscious beliefs – that make up who I am as a designer. My conception of form arises from an essentialist approach to space and shape. This conception developed out of stripping ornament and detail, leaving visible only structural and proportional elements. The treatment is sparse at times and rigorous, but strives for a type of honesty. Much of the layout is determined by mathematical forms and systematic intervals. This aesthetic is more rough and concrete than lyrical and abstract. The forms I reference are indebted to older industrial forms, including among others the ubiquitous factory folk-art of North America. They strive for functional unpretentiousness. Like the realist painters I seek inspiration from ordinary people doing their ordinary tasks. Emphasizing the form and the aesthetic experience can create an interesting dynamic in the work. It creates visual interest but runs the risk of overthrowing its original intended function by delaying or frustrating quick comprehension. As a result, an emphasis on the implicit function, can oftentimes lead to failure because of its inherent ambiguity and decentered messaging. This work represents explorations of the limits within semiotic systems and communication and explores the aesthetic dimension and meaning within form itself

    Multispecies thought from the shadows: the associated worlds of dog-walking

    This paper develops the concept of multispecies thought through a study of dog-walking in a public park in Lancaster, England. It draws on cybernetic ideas from Bateson, Peircean semiotics and von Uexküll’s umwelten to explore how multispecies worlds come into being in the spaces of the park, and amongst humans, dogs, leads, toys and other things. It focuses on how an understanding of multispecies thought can be discerned that is not only specific to the situated relations in dog-walks, but also constituted through routines that foster new capacities between specific bodies. In this way, we come to understand multispecies worlds as located at the sites where specific, associated worlds are co-produced by dogs and humans yet reducible to neither. We use the examples of lead-walking and play with balls and frisbees to show how semiotic relations are co-produced across species. Building on previous work, we confront species-defined notions of capacity and thought and look instead at how the indexical relations of multispecies thinking offers liberatory potential

    Analyzing the Role of Model Uncertainty for Electronic Health Records

    In medicine, both ethical and monetary costs of incorrect predictions can be significant, and the complexity of the problems often necessitates increasingly complex models. Recent work has shown that changing just the random seed is enough for otherwise well-tuned deep neural networks to vary in their individual predicted probabilities. In light of this, we investigate the role of model uncertainty methods in the medical domain. Using RNN ensembles and various Bayesian RNNs, we show that population-level metrics, such as AUC-PR, AUC-ROC, log-likelihood, and calibration error, do not capture model uncertainty. Meanwhile, the presence of significant variability in patient-specific predictions and optimal decisions motivates the need for capturing model uncertainty. Understanding the uncertainty for individual patients is an area with clear clinical impact, such as determining when a model decision is likely to be brittle. We further show that RNNs with only Bayesian embeddings can be a more efficient way to capture model uncertainty compared to ensembles, and we analyze how model uncertainty is impacted across individual input features and patient subgroups.Comment: Published in the ACM Conference on Health, Inference, and Learning (CHIL) 2020.     A Neuromuscular Training Program Performed on Foam is Accompanied by Improved Balance and Jump Height in Recreational Runners

    Purpose: To assess balance, plyometric performance, and strength of recreational runners completing a neuromuscular training (NMT) program on a novel foam surface. Methods: After baseline testing, participants (n=14) completed 22-minute exercise sessions on foam twice weekly for eight weeks, and a post-training testing battery. Testing included lower quarter Y-balance test (LQYBT), dynamic leap and balance test (DLBT), squat jump and countermovement jump tests, and isometric strength testing of the foot and ankle via handheld dynamometry (HHD). Participants were asked to maintain their normal running routines throughout the study period and report any training missed due to injury. Results: Participants demonstrated significant (pConclusion: This study supports the use of progressive NMT on foam as a feasible intervention for recreational runners as all participants maintained typical running routines and reported no injuries. While further research is needed to directly inform possible effects of NMT on foam on injury risk and running performance, the improvements in single leg dynamic balance, lower body plyometric performance, and some indices of lower extremity strength in the present study suggest the efficacy of NMT performed on foam
