The article presents issues concerning tourist potential as one of the factors, but a very complex one, which determine creation of tourist products in a region. Considerations presented herein are part of the doctoral dissertation of the author (Nit k iew icz ‑Ja n kowsk a, 2009a). The following elements were discussed in order to determine the role of tourist potential as a determining factor for creation of tourist products: basic tourism‑related notions, functions of tourism, tourist potential including tourist values and facilities, tourist attractiveness and tourist products

Basic tourist values classifications were described and the definition of a border zone was given. Besides, attention was also paid to the development of tourism in the border zone of Silesian province, which undoubtedly increases its tourist attractiveness

Expression of adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 in the ovary and concentration of plasma adiponectin during the oestrous cycle of the pig

The aim of this study was to compare the expression levels of adiponectin receptor 1 and adiponectin receptor 2 mRNAs and proteins in porcine ovaries during four stages (days 2 to 3, 10 to 12, 14 to 16, 17 to 19) of the oestrous cycle and to measure adiponectin plasma concentrations during the same phases of the cycle. Higher mRNA expression of adiponectin receptor 1 was detected in porcine granulosa cells than in corpora lutea and theca cells (P < 0.01). In contrast, higher gene expression of adiponectin receptor 2 occurred in newly developed and mature corpora lutea (P < 0.01). The adiponectin receptor 1 protein content was the highest in corpora lutea isolated on days 2 to 3 of the cycle and was the lowest in theca interna cells (P < 0.01). The profile of adiponectin receptor 2 protein was similar to that of adiponectin receptor 1. Adiponectin plasma concentrations were significantly higher throughout the luteal phase than in the follicular phase (P < 0.01). In conclusion, the presence of adiponectin receptor 1 and adiponectin receptor 2 mRNAs and proteins in the porcine ovary suggests that adiponectin may directly affect ovarian functions through its own specific receptors. The expression of both receptors and adiponectin plasma concentration were dependent on hormonal status related to the stage of the cycle

Cultural heritage of riverside tourist space in selected examples of the Odra Valley

    No full text
The main objectives the authors set in the paper were to determine the role of riverside space in tourist space, and also to present selected examples of the cultural heritage of the riverside space of the Odra Valley. In reference to the those objectives, the authors specified the notions of space (in various aspects), tourist space, riverside space, and cultural heritage. An attempt was made to define the notion of riverside tourist space. The cultural heritage of the Odra Valley was also emphasised. The article ends with conclusions regarding the role of riverside space in tourist space. This part also mentions actions regarding tourism development in the area under discussion

Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Province as a factor of tourism promotion in the upper Silesian agglomeration

Among the many interesting types of tourism, there can also be found ones which are not only a form of physical or intellectual activity, but also a kind of travel to the past. The type of tourism that combines the mentioned features is heritage tourism, particularly its subtype called post-industrial tourism. The objective of this article is to describe the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Province and to compare tourist traffic in selected post-industrial objects to the total rate of tourist traffi c in industrialized regions of the Silesian Province. Two objects were chosen for the case study; although they have comparable historical attractiveness as monuments of post-industrial tourism, they present two different ways of tourist use and they attract different numbers of visitors. Analyses of the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Province and the mentioned cases of tourist attractions allow for the conclusion that each object differs in its importance, but they all compose an important set of tourist attractions of the region. Even though the Gliwice Radio Station attracts fi ve times less visitors than the Historic Coal Mine GUIDO, the tourist value of both of these objects increases the total offer of the region to a similar extent. The synergy of objects located along the route can also be seen in the general tendency of the number of tourists as well as overnight stays in the Silesian Province

ORIGINAL RESEARCH Localization of orexin A and orexin B in the porcine uterus

The presence of orexins and their receptors in gonads indicate that these hormones participate in the control of reproductive functions. The aim of the study was to compare the expression of the prepro-orexin (PPO) gene in porcine endometrium and myometrium and the intensity of OXAand OXB-immunoreactivity in the following uterine structures: endometrial glandular and luminal epithelium and stroma as well as the myometrial longitudinal and circular muscles during the four stages (days 2–3, 10–12, 14–16, 17–19) of the estrous cycle. The highest expression of PPO mRNA was observed in the endometrium and the myometrium on days 14–16 of the cycle. The expression of the PPO gene on days 2–3 was more pronounced in the myometrium than in the endometrium, whereas on days 17–19 the gene expression was markedly higher in the endometrium. The OXA signal intensity was highest on days 2–3 in the luminal epithelium and on days 2–

Genetic characteristics of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stocking material released into Polish rivers

    No full text
In Poland, stocking rivers with Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) began in the nineteenth century, and become intensive in the 1990s. Currently, it is performed by the Polish Angling Association, and institutions involved in the program “Stocking Polish Marine Areas.” The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic variation of the salmon stocked in recent years in Poland. For this purpose, salmon stocks from three broodstocks and two river populations (Słupia and Parsęta) were investigated. Eleven microsatellite loci were amplified. The total number of alleles detected across all loci ranged from 46 to 81 in the stocks. The average observed heterozygosity across all investigated loci was 0.59; and the expected heterozygosity was 0.58. The populations remained in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. The average Garza-Williamson M index value for all populations was low suggesting a reduction in genetic variation because of the founder effect. Genetic distance among populations was high between the Lithuanian stock (Rutki and Parsęta) and the group of Latvian origin (Aquamar–Żelkówko–Słupia). Several admixture traces were recorded in all stocks with the smallest evidence of this in the Rutki stock. Inbreeding values per generation were typical of those observed in breeding stocks (0–3%). The effective population size values were low or very low for all the stocks (Ne 15-37)
