Non-adiabatic generation of a pure spin current in a 1D quantum ring with spin-orbit interaction

We demonstrate the theoretical possibility of obtaining a pure spin current in a 1D ring with spin-orbit interaction by irradiation with a non-adiabatic, two-component terahertz laser pulse, whose spatial asymmetry is reflected by an internal dephasing angle Ï•\phi. The stationary solutions of the equation of motion for the density operator are obtained for a spin-orbit coupling linear in the electron momentum (Rashba) and used to calculate the time-dependent charge and spin currents. We find that there are critical values of Ï•\phi at which the charge current disappears, while the spin current reaches a maximum or a minimum value.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

The entire dissertation/thesis text is included in the research.pdf file; the official abstract appears in the short.pdf file (which also appears in the research.pdf); a non-technical general description, or public abstract, appears in the public.pdf file.Title from title screen of research.pdf file (viewed on June 8, 2009)Vita.Thesis (Ed. D.) University of Missouri-Columbia 2008.The purpose of this mixed method design study was to add to the body of knowledge about stress and coping mechanisms by examining perceptions of superintendents stress by comparing perceptions of frequency of stress and what, if any, coping mechanisms were engaged. Moreover, the study sought to identify any significant differences between the frequency of stressors by gender and coping mechanisms utilized by female and male leaders. This study focused on qualities of coping mechanisms and their effectiveness and what type of support was provided by the school district. Study findings revealed that there is a statistical difference between the types of coping mechanisms utilized and effectiveness between male and female superintendents. Qualitative findings established the school district personnel provided no known support to superintendents in developing stress management skills and coping strategies. Other themes that arose from the study included; barriers in the perception of stress as it relates to gender, inconsistencies in the leaders ability to take time off, while superintendents agreed the school board is the predominant influencing factor, and the need for professional development programs.Includes bibliographical reference

Spatial Evidence for Transition Radiation in a Solar Radio Burst

Microturbulence, i.e. enhanced fluctuations of plasma density, electric and magnetic fields, is of great interest in astrophysical plasmas, but occurs on spatial scales far too small to resolve by remote sensing, e.g., at ~ 1-100 cm in the solar corona. This paper reports spatially resolved observations that offer strong support for the presence in solar flares of a suspected radio emission mechanism, resonant transition radiation, which is tightly coupled to the level of microturbulence and provides direct diagnostics of the existence and level of fluctuations on decimeter spatial scales. Although the level of the microturbulence derived from the radio data is not particularly high, /n^2 ~ 10^{-5}$, it is large enough to affect the charged particle diffusion and give rise to effective stochastic acceleration. This finding has exceptionally broad astrophysical implications since modern sophisticated numerical models predict generation of much stronger turbulence in relativistic objects, e.g., in gamma-ray burst sources.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, ApJL accepte

Pekanbaru city has increased population, that is resulting in declining public facilities, so peoples want to livable city. To realize the peoples desire, Government of pekanbaru city are launched smart city program. In one year of launched the smart city program, there are still many peoples who dont know about smart City program in Pekanbaru, so Diskominfo need to socialize the smart city program. In socializing smart city program, diskominfo conduct a communication planning. The purpose of this research is to describe and analyze communication program of the Communications, Information Technology, Statistics and Coding of Pekanbaru City In socializing smart city program. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods, with the subject of research are Head of E-Government Organizer and Staff of Communication, Informatics, Statistic and Coding of Pekanbaru City which is involved in socialization plan of smart city program. Data collected through interviews, observation, and documentations. To test the validity of the data the author uses an extension of participation and triangulation. The results of this research is the meaning of communication planning Diskominfo Pekanbaru city in analyzing the target communications categorized into general goals and special targets, in terms of message design Diskominfo Pekanbaru City convey messages in the form of information and persuasive, in terms of media selection Diskominfo Pekanbaru city using print media and Electronic media, in terms of determination of destination Diskominfo Pekanbaru City run the vision and mission that has been made so that later all layers in the Pekanbaru understand smart city program, and in terms of evaluation smart city program Diskominfo Pekanbaru city has not been maximized

The mitochondrial Na+/Ca2+ exchanger upregulates glucose dependent Ca2+ signalling linked to insulin secretion.

Mitochondria mediate dual metabolic and Ca(2+) shuttling activities. While the former is required for Ca(2+) signalling linked to insulin secretion, the role of the latter in β cell function has not been well understood, primarily because the molecular identity of the mitochondrial Ca(2+) transporters were elusive and the selectivity of their inhibitors was questionable. This study focuses on NCLX, the recently discovered mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger that is linked to Ca(2+) signalling in MIN6 and primary β cells. Suppression either of NCLX expression, using a siRNA construct (siNCLX) or of its activity, by a dominant negative construct (dnNCLX), enhanced mitochondrial Ca(2+) influx and blocked efflux induced by glucose or by cell depolarization. In addition, NCLX regulated basal, but not glucose-dependent changes, in metabolic rate, mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial resting Ca(2+). Importantly, NCLX controlled the rate and amplitude of cytosolic Ca(2+) changes induced by depolarization or high glucose, indicating that NCLX is a critical and rate limiting component in the cross talk between mitochondrial and plasma membrane Ca(2+) signalling. Finally, knockdown of NCLX expression was followed by a delay in glucose-dependent insulin secretion. These findings suggest that the mitochondrial Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchanger, NCLX, shapes glucose-dependent mitochondrial and cytosolic Ca(2+) signals thereby regulating the temporal pattern of insulin secretion in β cells

Patriarchy system which forms gender stereotypes and its issues, consciously or not is easily found in daily life. Gender stereotypes are strengthened by patriarchy system which includes judgments of surrounding society, and forms two categories; masculinity (men stereotypes) and femininity (women stereotypes) which referred from the different biological characteristics among men and women, to empower men and disempower women in society. The purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of patriarchy system which is portrayed in the Zemeckis' Beowulf film, and to analyze the portrayal of female main characters who break patriarchy system which is portrayed in the film. This research was designed as a qualitative research, and the theory of patriarchy by Allan G. Johnson was used as the ground theory. The results of the research showed that patriarchy system and its four elements such as male dominance, male identification, male centeredness, and obsession with control are promoted in the society which is portrayed in the Zemeckis' Beowulf film (2007). Although the two female main characters of the film live in a society which is patriarchal, but they do not fall into the patriarchy system and the gender stereotypes that are imposed on them as subordinate women, instead they challenge and break the social systems
