All Over the Map: Rethinking American Regions

Even as Americans keep moving all over the map in the late twentieth century, they cherish memories of the places they come from. But where do these places—these regions—come from? What makes them so real? In this groundbreaking book a distinguished group of historians explores the concept of region in America, traces changes the idea has undergone in our national experience, and examines its meaning for Americans today. Far from diminishing in importance, the authors conclude, regional differences continue to play a significant role in Americans\u27 self-image. Evaluating 'Prefer not to say' Around Sensitive Disclosures

As people's offline and online lives become increasingly entwined, the sensitivity of personal information disclosed online is increasing. Disclosures often occur through structured disclosure fields (e.g., drop-down lists). Prior research suggests these fields may limit privacy, with non-disclosing users being presumed to be hiding undesirable information. We investigated this around HIV status disclosure in online dating apps used by men who have sex with men. Our online study asked participants (N=183) to rate profiles where HIV status was either disclosed or undisclosed. We tested three designs for displaying undisclosed fields. Visibility of undisclosed fields had a significant effect on the way profiles were rated, and other profile information (e.g., ethnicity) could affect inferences that develop around undisclosed information. Our research highlights complexities around designing for non-disclosure and questions the voluntary nature of these fields. Further work is outlined to ensure disclosure control is appropriately implemented around online sensitive information disclosures

Androgen Receptor Copy Number Variation and Androgenetic Alopecia: A Case-Control Study

BACKGROUND: The functional polymorphism that explains the established association of the androgen receptor (AR) with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) remains unidentified, but Copy Number Variation (CNV) might be relevant. CNV involves changes in copy number of large segments of DNA, leading to the altered dosage of gene regulators or genes themselves. Two recent reports indicate regions of CNV in and around AR, and these have not been studied in relation to AGA. The aim of this preliminary case-control study was to determine if AR CNV is associated with AGA, with the hypothesis that CNV is the functional AR variant contributing to this condition. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification was used to screen for CNV in five AR exons and a conserved, non-coding region upstream of AR in 85 men carefully selected as cases and controls for maximal phenotypic contrast. There was no evidence of CNV in AR in any of the cases or controls, and thus no evidence of significant association between AGA and AR CNV. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The results suggest this form of genomic variation at the AR locus is unlikely to predispose to AGA

Coeducación : propuestas para alcanzar la igualdad de género desde las aulas

Resumen basado en el de la publicaciónSe analiza la existencia de desigualdades de género en la sociedad del siglo XXI y su reflejo en las distintas formas de discriminación de género. Ante este hecho cultural, la mayoría de los profesionales considera que la forma más efectiva de actuar es educar en igualdad desde la infancia. En el siglo XXI la coeducación se considera uno de los temas transversales fundamentales a incluir en todos los proyectos educativos. No obstante, los profesionales de la educación no siempre cuentan con los instrumentos y la información adecuada para poder desarrollar su labor coeducativa con la misma eficacia. Las actitudes sexistas en las aulas han sufrido un largo proceso de cambio, dando lugar a nuevas formas de sexismo mucho más complejas y menos evidentes, y por ello, son necesarias metodologías que ayuden a comprender esos mecanismos. Se hace imprescindible la existencia de foros de debate y formación que posibiliten la progresiva reorientación del modelo social tradicionalmente patriarcal, hacia un sistema más equitativo, basado en las competencias y capacidades individuales de las personas.
