    Anomalous Hall effect in field-effect structures of (Ga,Mn)As

    The anomalous Hall effect in metal-insulator-semiconductor structures having thin (Ga,Mn)As layers as a channel has been studied in a wide range of Mn and hole densities changed by the gate electric field. Strong and unanticipated temperature dependence, including a change of sign, of the anomalous Hall conductance σxy\sigma_{xy} has been found in samples with the highest Curie temperatures. For more disordered channels, the scaling relation between σxy\sigma_{xy} and σxx\sigma_{xx}, similar to the one observed previously for thicker samples, is recovered.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    To prevent duplication or loss of genomic regions during DNA replication, it is essential that the entire genome is copied precisely once every S phase. Cells achieve this by mutually exclusive regulation of origin firing and licensing. A crucial protein that is involved in origin licensing is chromatin licensing and DNA replication factor 1 (CDT1) and, therefore, activity of this protein must be strictly controlled. Four recent articles have demonstrated that proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), an essential sliding clamp used in replication and DNA repair, has a crucial role in this process by mediating the proteasomal degradation of CDT1

    Grain size effect on the low-temperature oxidation of titanomagnetite

    The low-temperature oxidation process in titanomagnetite has been investigated. Using samples with controlled grain sizes, it has been shown that there is a critical grain size in the oxidation behaviour of titanomagnetites; smaller grains undergo low-temperature oxidation, while larger ones separate to Fe-rich titanomagnetite and Ti-rich hemo-ilmenite (high-temperature oxidation). The difference between the results of similar experiments by Ozima and Sakamoto (1971) and by Readman and O'Reilly (1972) can be explained in terms of differences in partide sizes of titanomagnetites. Comparable results were obtained from natural subaerial and submarine basalts; when they are heated to temperatures between 150° C and 375° C, oxidation proceeds in submarine basalts, but it does not in subaerially erupted basalts and a high-temperature oxidation process occurs.     Anonymization server system for DICOM images

    We have developed an anonymization system for DICOM images. It requires consent from the patient to use the DICOM images for research or education. However, providing the DICOM image to the other facilities is not safe because it contains a lot of personal data. Our system is a server that provides anonymization service of DICOM images for users in the facility. The distinctive features of the system are, input interface, flexible anonymization policy, and automatic body part identification. In the first feature, we can use the anonymization service on the existing DICOM workstations. In the second feature, we can select a best policy fitting for the Protection of personal data that is ruled by each medical facility. In the third feature, we can identify the body parts that are included in the input image set, even if the set lacks the body part tag in DICOM header. We installed the system for the first time to a hospital in December 2005. Currently, the system is working in other four facilities. In this paper we describe the system and how it works

    Direct k-space mapping of the electronic structure in an oxide-oxide interface

    The interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 hosts a two-dimensional electron system of itinerant carriers, although both oxides are band insulators. Interface ferromagnetism coexisting with superconductivity has been found and attributed to local moments. Experimentally, it has been established that Ti 3d electrons are confined to the interface. Using soft x-ray angle-resolved resonant photoelectron spectroscopy we have directly mapped the interface states in k-space. Our data demonstrate a charge dichotomy. A mobile fraction contributes to Fermi surface sheets, whereas a localized portion at higher binding energies is tentatively attributed to electrons trapped by O-vacancies in the SrTiO3. While photovoltage effects in the polar LaAlO3 layers cannot be excluded, the apparent absence of surface-related Fermi surface sheets could also be fully reconciled in a recently proposed electronic reconstruction picture where the built-in potential in the LaAlO3 is compensated by surface O-vacancies serving also as charge reservoir.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, incl.     Arctic and Antarctic polar mesosphere summer echoes observed with oblique incidence HF radars: analysis using simultaneous MF and VHF radar data

    Polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSEs) have been well studied using vertical incidence VHF radars at northern high-latitudes. In this paper, two PMSE events detected with the oblique incidence SuperDARN HF radars at Hankasalmi, Finland (62.3° N) and Syowa Station, Antarctica (69.0° S), are analyzed, together with simultaneous VHF and medium-frequency (MF) radar data. Altitude resolutions of the HF radars in the mesosphere and the lower thermosphere are too poor to know exact PMSE altitudes. However, a comparison of Doppler velocity from the HF radar and neutral wind velocity from the MF radar shows that PMSEs at the HF band appeared at altitudes within 80-90km, which are consistent with those from previous vertical incidence HF-VHF radar results. The HF-VHF PMSE occurrences exhibit a semidiurnal behavior, as observed by other researchers. It is found that in one event, PMSEs occurred when westward semidiurnal winds with large amplitude at 85-88km altitudes attained a maximum. When the HF-VHF PMSEs were observed at distances beyond 180km from MF radar sites, the MF radars detected no appreciable signatures of echo enhancement. <br><br><b>Key words.</b> Meteorology and atmospheric dynamics (middle atmosphere dynamics; thermospheric dynamics; waves and tides
