    Racist Babies? Resisting Whiteness in Parenting

    Whiteness has evolved in the way that mostly white parents teach their children to embrace and normalize it. Whereas within the United States previously, white families employed explicitly racist tactics to maintain whiteness in their children, today white, neoliberal families have adapted their whiteness to be more implicit and socially acceptable. This chapter draws on literature and narrative inquiry to describe how whiteness is passed down, generation by generation. The author looks particularly at white, neoliberal, and color evasive families of today to deconstruct these myths. The author closes by offering strategies and examples for parents who want to raise critically conscious and socially just children and grow these traits within themselves as well

    介護老人保健施設における高齢者の食事摂取状況

     高齢者の低栄養問題について、喫食率の調査から検討した。対象者は兵庫県神戸市内の介護老人保健施設に入所する経口摂取が可能な80歳以上の高齢者33名である。施設で提供されている食事である朝食、昼食、夕食、間食の3 日間の食事摂取状況を調査し、80歳代と90歳以上における年齢階級ごとの食事摂取量と喫食率を調べた。喫食率はあらかじめ提供された食事量から残食量を差し引いて摂取量を求めて計算した。90歳以上の体重は80歳代よりも有意に低く、BMI でも同様の傾向がみられた(BMI,80歳代:20.8;90歳以上:18.5)。BMI <18.5の者は80歳代で33.3%、90歳以上で46.7%であった。全体の平均喫食率は88.8 ± 12.1%であり、有意ではないが、80歳代に比べて90歳以上で低かった。料理区分ごとの喫食率では、間食を除く料理区分で80歳代よりも90歳以上の喫食率が低くなっており、特に主菜の喫食率は90歳以上では79.4%、80歳代は93.4%であり、有意に低かった。また、両群ともに汁物の喫食率が他の食事区分の中で最も低かった

    Stroke Care Unit (SCU) in Tokushima University Hospital has been opened since November 1999. Patients with acute stroke in SCU were diagnosed by stroke MRI and biomarker immediately after their admission. Diffusion MRI could diagnose the ultra-acute ischemic and hemorrhagic lesion except brainstem ischemic lesion within 3 hrs after onset. Diffusion-Perfusion mismatch was useful to indicate intra-arterial thrombolytic therapy. 3T-MRI was introduced since March 2004,and it can measured functional MR spectroscopy and tractography more quickly compared to 1.5T-MRI. Plasma oxidized LDL in patients with acute cerebral infarction was significantly higher than that in healthy control and it became peak level during 3‐5 day after stroke onset. In conclusion, stroke MRI and plasma oxidized LDL are useful diagnostic tools for acute stroke

    Investigating the relationship between IGF-I, IGF-II, and IGFBP-3 concentrations and later-life cognition and brain volume

    Background The insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) pathways, including insulin-like growth factors (IGFs), vary with age. However, their association with late-life cognition and neuroimaging parameters is not well characterized. Methods Using data from the British 1946 birth cohort, we investigated associations of IGF-I, IGF-II and IGF binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3; measured at 53 and 60-64 years of age) with cognitive performance [word-learning test (WLT) and visual letter search (VLS) at 60-64 years and 69 years of age] and cognitive state [Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Exam III (ACE-III) at 69-71 years of age], and in a proportion, quantified neuroimaging measures [whole brain volume (WBV), white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV), hippocampal volume (HV)]. Regression models included adjustments for demographic, lifestyle, and health factors. Results Higher IGF-I and IGF-II at 53 years of age was associated with higher ACE-III scores [ß 0.07 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.02, 0.12); scoreACE-III 89.48 (88.86, 90.1), respectively). IGF-II at 53 years of age was additionally associated with higher WLT scores [scoreWLT 20 (19.35, 20.65)]. IGFBP-3 at 60 to 64 years of age was associated with favorable VLS score at 60 to 64 and 69 years of age [ß 0.07 (0.01, 0.12); ß 0.07 (0.02, 0.12), respectively], higher memory and cognitive state at 69 years of age [ß 0.07 (0.01, 0.12); ß 0.07 (0.01, 0.13), respectively], and reduced WMHV [ß −0.1 (−0.21, −0.00)]. IGF-I/IGFBP-3 at 60 to 64 years of was associated with lower VLS scores at 69 years of age [ß −0.08 (−0.15, −0.02)]. Conclusions Increased measure in IIS parameters (IGF-I, IGF-II, and IGFBP-3) relate to better cognitive state in later life. There were apparent associations with specific cognitive domains (IGF-II relating to memory; IGFBP-3 relating to memory, processing speed, and WMHV; and IGF-I/IGFBP-3 molar ratio related to slower processing speed). IGFs and IGFBP-3 are associated with favorable cognitive function outcomes

    Water intake, hydration status and 2-year changes in cognitive performance: a prospective cohort study

    BackgroundWater intake and hydration status have been suggested to impact cognition; however, longitudinal evidence is limited and often inconsistent. This study aimed to longitudinally assess the association between hydration status and water intake based on current recommendations, with changes in cognition in an older Spanish population at high cardiovascular disease risk.MethodsA prospective analysis was conducted of a cohort of 1957 adults (aged 55-75) with overweight/obesity (BMI between >= 27 and = 300 mmol/L (dehydrated). Water intake was assessed as total drinking water intake and total water intake from food and beverages and according to EFSA recommendations. Global cognitive function was determined as a composite z-score summarizing individual participant results from all neuropsychological tests. Multivariable linear regression models were fitted to assess the associations between baseline hydration status and fluid intake, continuously and categorically, with 2-year changes in cognitive performance.ResultsThe mean baseline daily total water intake was 2871 +/- 676 mL/day (2889 +/- 677 mL/day in men; 2854 +/- 674 mL/day in women), and 80.2% of participants met the ESFA reference values for an adequate intake. Serum osmolarity (mean 298 +/- 24 mmol/L, range 263 to 347 mmol/L) indicated that 56% of participants were physiologically dehydrated. Lower physiological hydration status (i.e., greater serum osmolarity) was associated with a greater decline in global cognitive function z-score over a 2-year period (beta: - 0.010; 95% CI - 0.017 to - 0.004, p-value = 0.002). No significant associations were observed between water intake from beverages and/or foods with 2-year changes in global cognitive function.ConclusionsReduced physiological hydration status was associated with greater reductions in global cognitive function over a 2-year period in older adults with metabolic syndrome and overweight or obesity. Future research assessing the impact of hydration on cognitive performance over a longer duration is needed

    Impact of mediterranean diet promotion on environmental sustainability: a longitudinal analysis

    [EN]This article aims to estimate the differences in environmental impact (greenhouse gas [GHG] emissions, land use, energy used, acidification and potential eutrophication) after one year of promoting a Mediterranean diet (MD). Methods Baseline and 1-year follow-up data from 5800 participants in the PREDIMED-Plus study were used. Each participant's food intake was estimated using validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires, and the adherence to MD using the Dietary Score. The influence of diet on environmental impact was assessed through the EAT-Lancet Commission tables.     Higher versus lower nut consumption and changes in cognitive performance over two years in a population at risk of cognitive decline: a cohort study

    Background: Tree nuts and peanuts (henceforth, nuts) are nutrient-dense foods rich in neuroprotective components; thus, their consumption could benefit cognitive health. However, evidence to date is limited and inconsistent regarding the potential benefits of nuts for cognitive function. Objective: To prospectively evaluate the association between nut consumption and 2-y changes in cognitive performance in older adults at cognitive decline risk. Methods: A total of 6,630 participants aged 55 to 75 y (mean age 65.0±4.9 y, 48.4% women) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome completed a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests at baseline and a 2-y follow-up. Composite cognitive scores were used to assess global, general, attention, and executive function domains. Nut consumption was categorized as Results: Nut consumption was positively associated with 2-y changes in general cognitive function (P-trend Conclusion: Frequent nut consumption was associated with a smaller decline in general cognitive performance over 2 y in older adults at risk of cognitive decline.
